| Zang | posted 6-Mar-2004 5:46pm "Yes?" in kind of a long drawn out questioning sort of way. BTW, I hate it when people do that. What I hate more is when someone waits outside the door, unless it's a crowded party or something. If I encounter a closed bathroom door, in most circumstances, I will try the doorknob gently and quietly, if it is locked, I walk away until the person comes out. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 6-Mar-2004 5:55pm "Whaddya want?"...in a real grouchy tone of voice as I HATE to be bugged when I'm using the bathroom! |
| Glassa | posted 6-Mar-2004 6:22pm "Occupied"

| Galomorro | posted 6-Mar-2004 8:59pm "Yeah" or "Yes" and "I'll be out in a minute." |
| pandora | posted 6-Mar-2004 10:47pm I usually say "hello?" if I'm in a public restroom, and at home I leave the door open. |
| romkey | posted 6-Mar-2004 11:05pm it depends on whether I'm at home or in a public bathroom... probably "I'll be out in a minute" or something similar. |
| cerealkiller | posted 6-Mar-2004 11:14pm What?? angrily |
| ElvisFan67 | posted 6-Mar-2004 11:49pm Recently, I developed a habit of saying that it's occupied. Other times I'll say that I'll be out in a little bit. |
| Enheduanna | posted 7-Mar-2004 12:59am I usually say "Just a minute" or the like. Sometimes I say "Someone's in here." |
| Amanda | posted 7-Mar-2004 2:50am At home I say "What?", in public I'll say "Someone's in here". |
| anoddoblivion | posted 7-Mar-2004 3:22am Other: I say "Hello!" |
| bill | posted 7-Mar-2004 6:47am Sometimes when I'm in a situation like this (e.g. a public restroom), I will cough to let my presence be know before it gets to the point of someone knocking. |
| Biggles | posted 7-Mar-2004 8:49am At my college annexe, I would generally say nothing and hope the lock holds! In public toilets or the ones at the Zoology department I would generally say "Sorry!". At home, I would usually say "I'm in here" or "It's me! I'll be out soon" or "Sorry, I'm going to be ages!" |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 7-Mar-2004 8:52am We only got a lock on the door to out toilet at home when I was about 16. In my house, we all learned to never try the door without knocking! Generally speaking, if the door was wide open it was empty, and if it was shut it was occupied, but guests weren't to know that so the system got confused sometimes. I insisted we got a lock after a whole stream of my younger brother's friends half-walked in on me, one after the other, while I was on the toilet |
| romkey | posted 7-Mar-2004 9:06am the worst situation I ever had with this was when I was in a restaurant bathroom and a little kid started banging on the door and wouldn't stop. |
| ferrisbueller | posted 7-Mar-2004 11:21am I always respond, "Just a minute, please." |

| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 7-Mar-2004 5:01pm ...and what did it cost for the lock, like 70p.? |
| wolfchik9 | posted 7-Mar-2004 7:21pm I usually say, "Yes?" That wasn't an option... kind of weird. |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 7-Mar-2004 8:40pm Pretty much - but it also required my father to get into "DIY" mode - always a scary prospect.... |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 7-Mar-2004 10:50pm "What happened to the door-frame? It looks like wolverines have been nibbling on it." |
| Violet | posted 7-Mar-2004 11:51pm In an English-speaking country, I would say "I'm in here" or "there's someone in here," but now I live in Korea and have no idea what to say in this case, so I usually just move around or something to make some noise so it's obvious the stall is occupied. |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 8-Mar-2004 5:31am |
| sonikJ | posted 8-Mar-2004 7:55am With a simple, "What?" Everyone knows when someone is in the bathroom in our house, and usually when someone knocks, they want to know where something is or to ask me some other question. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 8-Mar-2004 8:18am I almost always say "occupied" if I have company over. If it's my girlfriend I usually tell her to come in unless I'm taking a crap in which case she wouldn't anyway. |
| judgescratch | posted 8-Mar-2004 9:11am Occupied. |
