| anoddoblivion | posted 3-Mar-2004 6:03pm I like saving magazines. So if there's something in one I esp. like, well, it gets saved anyway! |
| pandora | posted 3-Mar-2004 6:06pm I don't often want to save whole articles. I tend to remember the bits that are interesting to me and then I recycle the magazine. |
| Amanda | posted 3-Mar-2004 6:12pm Keep the whole magazine. |
| freebird | posted 3-Mar-2004 6:20pm I usually save the entire magazine because I may need it for bibliography information or something like that. I just like to be able to identify the source. |
| nasale | posted 3-Mar-2004 6:25pm I'm the worst pack rat! It would make sense to cut out the article, but why do it the easy way? |
| dora | posted 3-Mar-2004 6:33pm I save the entire magazine.
Unless it's online then I save the article and put it in one of my extremely organized folders. |
| mandy | posted 3-Mar-2004 6:54pm I never save things like that |
| ElvisFan67 | posted 3-Mar-2004 7:31pm Most of the time I rip out the page containing the interesting info and toss the rest of the magazine. |
| bill | posted 3-Mar-2004 7:32pm Both, either... I almost never save articles... I do tear some and save others in some circumstances though. I save all my Sky & Telescopes, mostly because the articles are good and I feel like I may want to go back to them. Maybe that will never happen. I read Entertainment weekly and I will tear that (though it's usually because of some bit of media that I want to look into more). Generally when I'm done with it, it goes in the trash anyway. |
| Galomorro | posted 3-Mar-2004 7:36pm Prefer to tear out because it takes less space. |
| Zang | posted 3-Mar-2004 8:12pm On the rare occasion that I buy magazines, I don't usually throw them out. If I do throw them out, it is probably because I have a huge stack of old magazines I don't want anymore. I honestly can't think of any time that I have saved a magazine just because of one article. Nor have I ever torn an article out of a magazine and thrown the rest away. |
| ASB | posted 3-Mar-2004 8:58pm If I own the magazine why would I rip it out? I really don't understand the question. |
| thevelvetcure | posted 3-Mar-2004 10:20pm Depends on the size of the article, single page (tear/cut) multi-page (entire mag) |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to ASB) posted 3-Mar-2004 10:22pm exactly!!! you only rip out the articles if the magazine isn't yours LOL |
| ASB | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 3-Mar-2004 10:31pm I could see if you were reading a magazine in a waiting room and wanted to finish the article you would rip it out if you had to leave or something. I don't usually throw out any of my magazines but the ones I do I don't want to save the articles and I have read them from front to back. I am not in need of space so much that I can't keep a few magazines around |
| Sahndya | posted 3-Mar-2004 11:02pm LOL, I just asked to see what people thought. I at one point had over three hundred magazines saved, from as far back as ten years ago, when all I wanted was one or two articles in each. So it got to the point where I had to tear them out and save them, because I just didn't have the space. |
| Irene007 | posted 3-Mar-2004 11:27pm I save the magazine - my Mom tears out articles and then gives me the remainder after she tore out all the pertinent information for my other siblings or for herself... |
| Irene007 | (reply to Sahndya) posted 3-Mar-2004 11:32pm Hi ya! Never seen you around!! Welcome!!!!!!
I keep the whole magazine and when I do clean up; I'll toss the magazine if I haven't referred to it in more than a year. I also keep books that I have really enjoyed, which is exceptional because the only ones I keep are the occasional classics but mainly reference books. If I have read it, chances are; I won't again - but I keep it "just in case"! (until I clean up!) |
| Irene007 | (reply to ASB) posted 3-Mar-2004 11:37pm Awwww... C'mon ASB! You're complicating the question again. Who cares if you own it? The question is clear - do you rip articles from magazines? (Whether you own them or not is not the issue - the thought never even crossed my mind when I answered... I assumed the question referred to my magazines because I would never consider ripping someone else's -regardless of what thevelvetcure says!) |
| Sahndya | (reply to Irene007) posted 4-Mar-2004 12:01am Hello! Thanks. |
| Irene007 | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 12:37am Hello... My name is Irene and I am an SC addict! *applause*
Most people here are addicts, as you will discover when your need to be here will increase on a daily basis. BUT YOU WON'T REGRET IT!! Where do you hail from? I'm in Montreal (more specifically, on the North-Eastern shore in Celine Dion's home town - Ugh! Charlemagne!) |
| Sahndya | (reply to Irene007) posted 4-Mar-2004 1:04am Hello, Irene. Nice to meet you. I'm from Ohio. There's really nothing exciting to brag about, but it's home. |
| kirst | posted 4-Mar-2004 1:09am depends...I do both. |
| Irene007 | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 1:18am Charlemagne for ...um.... 3-4 years now? Before that, LaPlaine a couple of years, before that St-Lin for some 10 years, before that Laval for a year before that LaSalle for 2 1/2 years before that... aw forget it! I moved a lot after I got married; I could go on all night! I was born in Ottawa but never lived in Ontario (I was born before medicare was instituted here in Canada), my parents lived in Aylmer (QC) and just crossed the bridge into Ontario because the hospital was closer than the one in Quebec - they had to pay for the services back then anyway! I lived in Quebec all my life (all over - my Dad move a lot too!) then my parents bought a house on the South Shore of Montreal (Longueuil) when I was 6 - so I guess I really grew up there. My husband is from the North Shore (Laval) and we met on the Island of Montreal. The rest is history!
So what do you do for a living? (I'm a graphic artist - I hate the sound of that because anyone with a computer calls himself that nowadays!!) How old are you? (I'm 42 years young!) Do you have any children? (I have 2 - one girl, almost 21 yrs old and just married last September and a boy, 19 yrs old and still in school and at home!) Now you're up to date on me - have you any questions about the other users? I'm such a gossip! |
| Sahndya | (reply to Irene007) posted 4-Mar-2004 1:44am LOL! I dont' really know who's who well enough to have questions on anyone specific, but I'll keep that in mind for future reference. I'm 19 years old. I don't have a job quite yet; I'm in college studying psychology. I've looked into getting a part-time job, but my mom and grandma are adamant that school is to be my only priority. They've actually foiled my attempts at working someplace! It's a good thing it made me laugh, or I'd be really mad. *chuckles* Yes, I suppose people do abuse the term "graphic artist". In fact, I know quite a few of them! I should go inform them that I've met someone who is an actual graphic artist, and see how they react! I doubt they'd be quite so confident then. |
| Irene007 | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 1:52am Well, I have a cat now - he's called Copy Cat (looks just like our cat of 17 years who passed away almost 2 years ago - Good old Chopsuey... What attracted you to study psychology in particular? |
| dab | posted 4-Mar-2004 8:21am Sometimes one, sometimes the other. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 4-Mar-2004 8:32am I'll save the entire magazine 90% of the time. Sometimes if it's just an article I want to show someone else I'll tear it out let them read it then they can throw it away. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 8:49am Hi there, I'll welcome you to SC too. |
| romkey | posted 4-Mar-2004 9:53am generally what I do these days is to find the article on the magazine's web site and download it and save it as a PDF file so that I can access it later |
| paulyw | posted 4-Mar-2004 10:28am If there is a magazine article I want to save I would usually borrow it (If it is from a doctor's office for an example) make photo copies, and read the photo copies, and keep the photo copies.Al times, if the magazine is old, the place would let me have it. |
| judgescratch | posted 4-Mar-2004 12:51pm I tear out the individual article. |
| judgescratch | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 12:57pm Hey Sahndya...I'll welcome you here, too. I'm 31 and from Delaware, and believe me, like you said about Ohio There's nothing to brag about here !!.....but it's okay, I'm meeting some good people (I've only been in Delaware for a year)...where are you studying? |
| Iseult | posted 4-Mar-2004 1:10pm I tear out the whole page, not just the article. |
| Biggles | posted 4-Mar-2004 2:22pm The only "magazines" that I really read are Science journals in the libraries - the librarians would be *so* pissed off if I destroyed or stole the journals. I generally save the nots I make from the journals, and I also sometimes save files as PDFs - I'm not crazy about reading them online/off a computer screen though, I'd rather do it in the library. |
| Biggles | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 2:27pm Hello there! Nice to see another student at SC - there are a handful of us here |
| Dino | posted 4-Mar-2004 3:37pm I save the entire magazine
...then never get around to reading it and throw it away. |
| Enheduanna | posted 4-Mar-2004 3:58pm I figure I can always find it online if I want to refer to it again. |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to ASB) posted 4-Mar-2004 5:38pm I have an entire water box of saved magazines, just tucked away in the closet...just in case |
| Sahndya | (reply to Irene007) posted 4-Mar-2004 5:41pm Hmm... I really don't know one exact thing that led me to psychology. I've been interested in the inner workings of the brain for a long time. I love hearing what people have to say, and how two people can read two entirely different things into the same scenario (which is part of what brought me to this site). Also, at one point in my life, I had wanted to see a psychologist, to sort of talk things out and get a different point of view on some things that were happening. The only ones I (and my mother) could find were men, and they all looked down on me as "the little girl". I thought 1) even if someone's problems seem meaningless, they still deserve to have someone hear them out (especially if they're getting paid for it!), and 2) perhaps I could help other girls who were having trouble handling things. It's actually more complicated than that, but as you might have guessed, I can get long-winded. Aw, Copy Cat is an adorable name! I'm sorry to hear about Chopsuey. |
| Sahndya | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 4-Mar-2004 5:46pm Hello, it's nice meeting you too. Oooh, interesting array of pets! How many horses do you own? We have four, but at this point, we're only able to ride one. |
| Sahndya | (reply to judgescratch) posted 4-Mar-2004 5:51pm Hello! Nice meeting you. Where did you live before you moved to Delaware? We moved to this part of Ohio a little over a year ago. I'm taking correspondence courses over the Internet and through the mail. Eventually, I'm also going to take courses at a local community college. My mom has needed a lot of help here at home (our house is kind of a "fixer-upper"), and my grandma just moved here to Ohio from Connecticut a few months ago, so it was a bad time for me to leave home! But fortunately we found a solution that is working well for everyone. |
| Glassa | posted 4-Mar-2004 6:20pm It depends. If it's a recipe, I'll tear it out. If it's a two page article type thing, I'll save the entire magazine. |
| Glassa | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 6:28pm Oh, now you're so wrong about Ohio. You have Cedar Point in Sandusky and King's Island in Cincinnati. We've been to Cedar Point several times now and are going back in June (bad time to go BTW).
You also have the COSI in Toledo. That was a nice place. I'm from Missouri, like Rockman. 29 married and no kids. I work at University of Missouri-Columbia in donations processing. |
| Sahndya | (reply to Biggles) posted 4-Mar-2004 6:48pm Hello! It's nice to know there are other students here as well.
My mom and your university seem to have a lot in common. What first got you interested in Biological Sciences? |
| Sahndya | (reply to Glassa) posted 4-Mar-2004 6:51pm *laughs* Yeah, there are some pretty cool amusement parks here. I've actually never been to Cedar Point, but I've heard good things about it. I take it it's worth the trip up? King's Island is fun, but ever since Paramount has taken it over, it's become more expensive and less geared toward families. |
| Biggles | (reply to Sahndya) posted 4-Mar-2004 8:05pm I'm not sure why I chose biology - I hated it when I was in compulsory education (until I was 16) and I only took it during my next 2 years in school (16-18) because I wanted a second science in case I wanted to do Chemistry at university (an *insane* idea!) Somewhere along the way I decided it was the way forward for me The strange thing is that the elements of Biology that I loved at school are the things I hate the most now - cell biology, biochemistry and genetics. Ugh. I'm much more of a whole-organisms fan, planning to specialise in infectious disease in later degrees. Do you have a job in your vacations? I should really try and get one over the summer, but I have a lot of work to do |
| ihatespiders | posted 4-Mar-2004 11:31pm I saved 2 magazines of the big flood along the Mississippi River in 1993.
My sister has a Life Magazine of President John F Kenedy, she also has a hard cover book of his assination and furneral. |
| judgescratch | (reply to Sahndya) posted 5-Mar-2004 7:16am Working on a "fixer upper" at nineteen is going to give you an invaluable education of its own!!!
I've moved around a lot. Before here, I was in Philadelphia (still considered home). Before that, I was in upstate New York, and before that, I was in California, and before that, I was in the Philadelphia area(grew up there). Where abouts in Connecticut? Do you miss the east coast or do you like being in the mid-west? |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to Sahndya) posted 5-Mar-2004 7:49am I have 9 of my own right now. three of them are like pets, the other 6 I'll sell. My goats (Larry, Moe, and Curly) are miniatur goats. My 2 dogs are Australian Shepherds. I'm boarding around 60 other horses at the moment, and don't think I'm going to take on any more.
Can I ask why you can only ride one of your horses? If yes, why? |
| Sahndya | (reply to judgescratch) posted 5-Mar-2004 8:37am *laughs* Yes, I've learned a lot already! Although so far, the only thing of value I've learned is "If you want something done right, you've got to do it yourself." Wow, you've moved around quite a bit! What brought you to Delaware? Do you still have family in Philadelphia? My mom grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, where my grandpa stayed until he died last year. My grandma lived in New Canaan for about 16 years, and my uncle lived in Stratford. They've all moved, though. I grew up here in Ohio, actually. I love visiting Connecticut, though. |
| Sahndya | (reply to Biggles) posted 5-Mar-2004 8:41am Actually, since I take correspondence courses, I don't have vacations! What occupation are you hoping to take once you finish school? |
| Sahndya | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 5-Mar-2004 8:53am LOL, yes, you can ask. Are your horses a certain breed? Two of ours are Arabian, and the other two are mixed. Have you been involved with horses all your life? I have, on and off, but three years ago is when we actually bought our first horse. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to Sahndya) posted 5-Mar-2004 9:52am Let me say first I think thats cool ya'all took in abused horses, and it does take time to build their trust back up.
I have a Tenn. walker I ride a lot. I also have an American Sadle Bred, and a 1/4\Arab mix. Most of the rest are 1/4 horses. My 1/4\Arab mix is a smart guy and he seems to know it, his name is Dammit and it fits him well. "Dammit get over here" "Dammit stop that". Them are said to him almost every day. He loves to scratch his head on my back and if I happen to bend over in front of him he will normally knock me over by hitting me in the ass with his head. It's a big game to us. When little kids are over we put on a good little funny show for them and they get a good laugh. Anyways I've been into horses for a while now, and been boarding them for about 5 years I guess now. |
| judgescratch | (reply to Sahndya) posted 5-Mar-2004 10:03am My job brought me to Delaware.
I have family both in Philadelphia and in the surrounding areas of Philadelphia, so, it's a place which I will always go to. Not to mention that I went to school there, so it's definitely a "stomping ground" for me. My SO is in upstate New York, but he's going to be coming to this area in June!!! I used to have a friend in the Trumbull area (exit 69 off of 84) in Conn., and I've spent some time up there. |
| Biggles | (reply to Sahndya) posted 5-Mar-2004 11:38am I'm not entirely sure about a career - definitely something in the field of infectious disease and for an organisation rather than a for-profit company. At the moment I'm thinking about whether I just want to do a PhD or whether I might be better off doing a medical degree as well. Another 7/8 years in education is an awfully long time! But if that's the only way to do what I want do do.... |
| Glassa | (reply to Sahndya) posted 5-Mar-2004 1:54pm Cedar Point is a must if you like amusement parks. Well worth the drive for us (12 hours).
A good time to go is in Sept/Oct during Halloweekends. |
| Irene007 | (reply to Sahndya) posted 6-Mar-2004 10:16am Yeah! I think someone should specialize in young women psychology! I come from a family of four (3 girls, one guy) and my husband is also from a family of four (all boys). I think he had a lot of difficulty dealing with our daughter when she was a teenager because of this - I didn't! Now his younger brother is going through the same thing with his 16 yr old daughter. It's driving him to tears because he feels like he's loosing control... I think that's the whole point, he has to learn that he cannot control her any longer and he must let go. When I see his daughter at family get togethers, she always gravitates towards me and wants me to herself. She'll jump on any opportunity to take a walk, run an errand just so we can be alone. She reminds me of my sisters daughters with whom I was close when they were that age. I wonder if they can sense that they have understanding from me because I went through the same kind of mixed feelings when I was their age... |

| darkshadowsseeker | posted 6-Mar-2004 6:19pm If it's my magazine, then I remove the article, if it's someone else's, then I would probably photocopy the article or get my own copy of the magazine. |
| ferrisbueller | posted 7-Mar-2004 11:25am It depends. If I'm in a doctor's office, I may inconspicously try to rip it out. If it's my magazine and I'm going to give it to a friend when I'm finished, I may take it to work and photocopy the article. |
| southernyankee | posted 7-Mar-2004 5:43pm cut it out. Dude, believe me when I say this, I spontainoulsy and obsessivily cut out crap load of stuff. Ads, acticles, funny crap, especially the funnies, you name it; which I plan to put them on my door. There's also a certain maganize that my roommate had and was about to throw it away, which I wont get into that; and then we decided to cut a few pages out, and before you knew it, I cut out like 80% of it. Dont ask. He cut like only 3 or 4 and put the pages on the wall, but I havent put anything up. |

| Sahndya | (reply to judgescratch) posted 9-Mar-2004 5:45pm So how are you settling in to Delaware? I would imagine it's quite different from Philadelphia! I could be wrong, though. |
| Sahndya | (reply to Biggles) posted 9-Mar-2004 5:50pm That's nice that you want to work for an organization rather than a corporation. |
| Sahndya | (reply to Glassa) posted 9-Mar-2004 5:53pm Oooh, that sounds good. I might suggest that to my family. Do you know, how scary is the Halloween event? I have a seven-year-old brother and a ten-year-old sister that spook easily. LOL. King's Island's Halloween event is NOT for families, so I was just wondering if Cedar Point has any family events during that time. |

| Sahndya | (reply to ASB) posted 9-Mar-2004 6:00pm *laughs* I live near Cincinnati, actually. But I live in the country, and there really is nothing to do here! Wal-Mart SuperCenter is the local hangout, and the new Arby's made the front page in the newspaper. |
| Biggles | (reply to Sahndya) posted 9-Mar-2004 6:29pm There's always lots of voluntary work available - the hard thing is finding paid work with largely voluntary organisations! But doors always open at some point |

| Sahndya | (reply to Biggles) posted 9-Mar-2004 8:59pm Yes, that is difficult. You could always take a job with a larger corporation, and then do volunteer work for organizations. But I'm a believer of the fact that whatever's meant to happen will. If it's meant to be, a door will open somewhere! |
| Sahndya | (reply to ASB) posted 9-Mar-2004 9:01pm I live... hmm... I guess it's about an hour or so away. It's not a drive we make often, but I have doctors' appointments in the city, so my mom and I go every few months. Do you live in the city? |

| judgescratch | (reply to Sahndya) posted 10-Mar-2004 7:19am In many ways, it's different because, being as how it's such a small state, everyone is so closely knit. It's been tough breaking into some of the "native" cliques, but there are several "imports" like me with whom I've connected.
Thanks for asking! |
