What makes you happy?

The other night my 2 1/2 year old son looked at me and said, "mumma, I happy." I realized then what a complex emotion happiness is.

I'd go with the idea of a happiness set-point, that you tend to drift back to. So I don't look for some big change in my life to make me happy; lots of little things, to keep pushing that happiness back up, works better. Foods I like, TV shows, a new book or game or comic or DVD, little interesting things to see, tours and convention trips each year that I can plan for and enjoy and tell people about afterward, etc.

Today the things that make me happy are to see my children and grandchild happy and well. that is all we want as parents I guess. Also to see my husband is well ( he's disabled) is good too and it makes me happy. I am happy when my family is okay and doing well. Didn't I say that in the above lines? It's the morning so I am not all there. * cool smile *

Being with Caleb makes me happy. No matter what my mood or how sad I am, he can always cheer me up. He's such a sweet, caring, awesome little boy. (Okay, he does have his bad moments!)

Other things that make me happy are being with my family and friends, the first cigarette in the morning, someone doing something kind and unexpected, not speaking to the dog (my maternal grandmother) for months at a time, alcohol, and being loved. * smile *

i instantly thought of that song by sheryl crow, 'if it makes you happy it can't be that bad....'
but to answer that question, there are too many things that make me 'happy', i used to keep a big ole fat notebook where i wrote down all the things that made me smile throughout the day, my original goal was to write down 5 things everyday, but i found that i was writing at least 20 or more things per day, and it was everything from hearing a killer song on the radio, see a particualr person at the time, a bird outside my window, but most importantly, my list started out everyday with the entry 'i woke up'
helped throughout that time in my life, i contemplated doing that little exercise again, but found it to be unecassary for i began to examine my life around me, and pulled myself out of that damn heavy gray cloud that seemed to be enveloping me

excellent survey berriegurl!!

i've missed you too!!
how's everything? w/caleb? with colton? with chris?

it's been weird around here. my hub got laid off permanently in the beginning of february, my computer was broken for a while, again....and figured out what causes my headaches, my gramma just died this week, have been trying to keep myself busy so cabin fever doesn't set in again * wink *

i'm alright though. we're planning a trip to colorado in early mid april, that'll be fun. we've decided to take a train there instead of flying or driving, we'll be there for about a week and a half, should be good times. thinking that noah will really enjoy the train, it's only a 24 hour trip, so not bad, and he'll be able to walk around on the train and what not, pretty excited for that.

you can give me a call sometime this week if you want and we'll catch up then, for like i said to rockman, i don't get online much anymore and my inbox is overflowing * wink *

anyhow, give caleb a little squeeze from me and noah!! talk to you soon and take care of yourself until then

yeah, the notebook thing did indeed work, for me anyhow..but i totally understand that when you're 'down', it doesn't even matter, that everything is 'crap', but that notebook really did help me open my eyes and slowly pull myself out of that cloud which was much needed for when i'm down, i'm not much good to anyone, ya know? especially now with a kid i really have to force myslef to just STOP and look around for just a little moment, it helps

hang in there girlie!!! * smile *

It does make me happy to complete something. It's not about getting it out of the way. It's about starting something, finishing it and doing a decent job. Of course, the circumstances in which I write my essays aren't always the most conducive to doing that, but it still works out ok.

I'm a "geek" - I like to work, always have, especially now that I've specialised as a biologist. I wouldn't be at university writing essays if I didn't think it was fun * smile *
