| TrinityAnn | posted 22-Feb-2004 6:43pm uhm, this may be biased since i havent tried mexifries or tater gems, but i guess tater tots-their pretty good, fries are better |
| ASB | posted 22-Feb-2004 6:50pm Never had mexi-fries and i like gems and tots about the same. Have not had them for years so I must not like them much. |
| Enheduanna | posted 22-Feb-2004 6:53pm Tater Tots are the only ones I've had. I like them. |
| kaleb777 | posted 22-Feb-2004 6:56pm Maybe these are called something different in Australia. |
| ASB | (reply to kaleb777) posted 22-Feb-2004 7:01pm http://www.oreida.com/tots.jsp gems are called crispy crowns on that website. I looked up mexi-fries and they are potatoes thinly sliced and seanoed and baked on a baking pan, They are a mexican side dish. I guess you could season them to be any sort of side dish though |
| dora | posted 22-Feb-2004 7:08pm WHAT? |
| kirsty | posted 22-Feb-2004 7:18pm I haven't heard of _any_ of them! |
| ASB | (reply to kirsty) posted 22-Feb-2004 7:55pm tater tots are shredded potatoes formed into a cylinder shape about 1-2 inches long and 1 inch thick and fried. tater gems are the same as tater tots but they are flat and round. mexi-fries are potatoes thinly sliced and seanoed and baked on a baking pan in a single layer, They are a mexican side dish. I guess you could season them to be any sort of side dish though |
| romkey | posted 22-Feb-2004 8:34pm I've only heard of (and tried) Tater Tots, which are okay... |
| SueBee | posted 22-Feb-2004 9:06pm I've never heard of Tater Gems. I like Mexi-Fries! |
| ElvisFan67 | posted 22-Feb-2004 9:28pm Well, I'm a lover of spicy foods, so I'll choose Mexi-Fries. |
| Amanda | posted 22-Feb-2004 10:07pm I've had tater tots and tater gems. I'm assuming mexi-fries are similar to seasoned fries. I'm not big on any of them. |
| thevelvetcure | posted 22-Feb-2004 10:51pm huh?....heh?....tater tots are ok, I REALLY like Checker's fries though...the old recipe...yumm!!! |
| Biggles | posted 23-Feb-2004 7:10am I've never had any of them and have only heard of Tater Tots. What are they? Potato croquettes? |
| Biggles | (reply to ASB) posted 23-Feb-2004 7:11am Ah, the first two sound a lot like rosti. |
| jettles | posted 23-Feb-2004 7:27am ick to all! |
| bill | posted 23-Feb-2004 8:40am I do like tater-tots, but I haven't tried the other two. ...and, honestly, I don't have tater-tots very often (if I did, I probably wouldn't like them that much). On a related matter... I hear that Morton's (famous for salt) has developed a new product: Hot Salt! ...ah! |
| autumnlight | posted 23-Feb-2004 9:44am I haven't tried or heard of any of them |
| freebird | posted 23-Feb-2004 12:33pm Love cheese tater tots from Sonic--Oh so good! |
| freebird | (reply to ASB) posted 23-Feb-2004 12:36pm Never heard of tater gems--are they good? I don't like mexi-fries but that is because of the spices--my stomach is too old for spice, I guess. |
| ASB | (reply to Biggles) posted 23-Feb-2004 1:22pm I have never heard of rosti |
| ASB | (reply to freebird) posted 23-Feb-2004 1:22pm They are alright. |
| kaleb777 | (reply to ASB) posted 23-Feb-2004 1:50pm I think we have potato gems but I don't know about the rest. I don't eat deep fried foods. |
| ASB | (reply to kaleb777) posted 23-Feb-2004 2:01pm you can bake them but I don't think it would be the same. |
| kaleb777 | (reply to ASB) posted 23-Feb-2004 2:52pm Yeah, I'm trying to cut carbs anyway. |
| Biggles | (reply to ASB) posted 23-Feb-2004 4:27pm You parboil potatoes, grate them, mix with grated cheese, form into "patties" and then bake them. Very tasty |
| ASB | (reply to Biggles) posted 23-Feb-2004 5:02pm Sort of like potatoe pancakes with cheese. Everything is always better with cheese. |
| Biggles | (reply to ASB) posted 23-Feb-2004 5:05pm Cheese is good. I made these just the other day - they were very good! I used brussel sprouts rather than spring greens. |
| Galomorro | posted 23-Feb-2004 7:33pm I haven't tried any of these. |
| Irene007 | posted 23-Feb-2004 10:14pm Never heard of 'em... |
| Zang | posted 23-Feb-2004 10:26pm I can't tell the difference. I was curious if anyone else could. |
| sonikJ | posted 24-Feb-2004 9:06am Tater Tots by a long shot. |
| mandy | posted 24-Feb-2004 10:49am mexi nuggets are good |
| leahdoll | posted 24-Feb-2004 12:54pm They all sound fried, which would make them all good (I've only heard of tate tots, but can take a pretty good guess at the other 2). |
| ROCKMAN | posted 24-Feb-2004 1:40pm I like tater tots. I don't think I've had the others. |
| ASB | (reply to Zang) posted 24-Feb-2004 4:22pm what are mexi fries? The only difference between gems and tots is the shape. but I understand mexi fries to be seasoned and tots and gems are not. |
| Zang | (reply to ASB) posted 24-Feb-2004 5:54pm The only difference I know of is the names. Mexi-Fries are served at a lot of Mexican fast food restaurants. You get a little thing of salsa for dipping...The other two are different brand names of a frozen in a bag product. All three are similar to McDonalds hash browns except they are about the size and shape of marshmallows. |
| ASB | (reply to Zang) posted 24-Feb-2004 6:10pm I know that tater tots are not usually seasoned from what I read about mexi-fry recipies they are usually flavored with mexican seasonings. I thought maybe you meant the flat type of tater tots when you said gems. did you see the link I provided above? |
| Zang | (reply to ASB) posted 25-Feb-2004 10:12am I wasn't familiar with Mexi-Fry recipes; I only knew of them from the Mexican fast food places. I suspect that different frozen food companies in different areas probably use and reuse the same names for different things. I've seen the flat kind (roughly triangular) called simply hash browns. I saw that you posted a link, but I didn't look at it. I will now. |
| Zang | (reply to ASB) posted 25-Feb-2004 10:16am Oh yeah, the Ore-Ida site. I checked that out when I was making the survey. I wanted to make sure that I got the spelling right... |
| caviartaste | posted 25-Feb-2004 1:44pm I haven't tried all three...but I like my own home-made cut up potato french fries better than anything the market has to offer. I HATE stuff with preservatives. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 27-Feb-2004 7:01pm At Taco Time, Mexi-Fries are merely seasoned Tater Tots. |
| Dino | posted 28-Feb-2004 8:39am I've never heard of any of these products. |
| wolfchik9 | posted 1-Mar-2004 9:49am I've never heard of Mexi-Fries and Tater Gems and I've never tried Tator Tots because I hear they're like hash browns and I don't like them. |
| kirsty | (reply to ASB) posted 12-Mar-2004 10:26pm Mmm... we don't get anything like that at all here!!! |
| they | posted 20-Mar-2004 3:15am Deep fryer tater tots!! |
| clare | posted 1-Aug-2006 2:21pm I've only had Tater Tots. |
