When I was real young I used to collect those little match-box cars and hot-wheel cars. Then in my teens I collected snakes and other reptiles. At one time I had over 150 snakes, a bunch of different lizards. I also raised mice and rats for snake food.

I loved Alf and collected anything that had him on it. I've still got my Alf doll, but everything else has disappeared over time.

I collected bird figurines for a few years. I had a ton of them. I'm not sure why I choose to collect them, though. I don't even like most of them now. * wry smile *

I was a real packrat. Other things I still do collect: things that glow in the dark, little plastic/rubber lizards and frogs, quirky little toys.

Sugar packets.
I also had an obsessive collection of international beer cans which surrounded the living room on perimeter shelves near the ceiling. Each had been opened with a nail from underneath, and preserved. I had multiple copies of each filed away in boxes in the garage, and a data base of my inventory.
It would take a lot more effort to describe all the things I still do collect. Metaphysical toys and knick-knacks is the main one though, especially optics and spherical things, and items that conjure an affinity with ancient cultures or different ways of seeing things.

I think they're still in my closet in my mom's house... somewhere under all my junk. I think I had at least a couple hundred, since I inherited my older brother's collection, too, when he lost interest in them. It was great when the card with your friend's name (or your sibling's!) was truly offensive.

I forgot to mention a couple of things I used to collect -- those little cardboard (larger than post-card size) miniature psychedelic-posters that used to be used to advertise rock bands in San Francisco was another thing. Also blacklight, psychedelic-type, and op-art posters of regular size. Also certain types of videotapes that either showed a lowflying plane flying over the countryside and cities or video-art images that were supposed to assist meditation, relaxation, etc. -- these latter are still available in "new age"-type catalogs; I used to call 'em "trip tapes." Got rid of all this stuff years ago though; too bad, some might be valuable now-especially those rockband poster-cards.

I got rid of my gum collection on the insistence of my Mom and sister (she shared the room with me) because I kept my collection stuck to the headboard of my bed. She said it grossed her out... I still don't get it! * grin *
I don't regret getting rid of it - it wouldn't have accrued any kind of value no matter how old it was!

How'd you get to NZ? parents? born there? I want to myself, but it seems they want you to be rich to allow you citizenship. I'd want to run a llama ranch and small internet media enterprise.
kirsty
(reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 20-Mar-2004 10:01pm
Yeah i was born here, so were both my parents. They don't want you to be rich, but you do have to get a certain number of 'points' to get in the country, these 'points' are made up of amount of money you are bringing with you, if you have a job here, if you have family here, if you have University degrees (education) etc...

I don't have any money, and about 20 years of community college courses, which don't really seem to be part of the point map. I'd be self-employed, but at a sustenance level, not as an employer. Investment money, profit-loss statement, masters degree - any way you look at it, it seemed to be looking for how much profit you would bring to NZ, and not just could you you make a living for yourself. I'd love to be wrong about that though.

Do you have any family to help you? Why don't you qualify for food stamps? How many kids did you say you have at home? Many churches have food pantrys. They give away groceries to the less fortunate. My mothers church does this for her. You should not have to go hungry. There are ways. You can make it happen. Be brave. * love *

Thanks Kitti. Nah, where I live about 300 miles from the closest family. We are all by ourselves (immediate family) down here. I had to leave my hometown in 1994 because I couldn't be around after the ex got out of prison. He was sent in 1993 because he tried to kill me with a baseball bat. I have 3 kids in the home right now--my two daughters and my grandson also me and my husband (he's disabled). My 19 year old son is in college and only comes home during the summer. He will be here soon. * smile * They say our income is over. My husband receives SSI and I work full-time. I have used churches in the past. I feel so bad that I work and still cannot make it. I am looking for a job I can do on the weekend. My other is 8-5 monday-friday. My dad sends us a check usually around the first of the month to help buy diapers and milk for the baby, and I sure appreciate it. It's just that I feel bad seeing someone on welfare and buying all those goodies and I cannot afford to buy those for my family. We eat a lot of beans, rice and potatoes. I usually buy in bulk because it is cheaper and I do coupons all the time, if it is going to save money. I even used coupons all the years I was able to collect food stamps. It sure helped me buy more.
