Would you like to be a census-taker?

Since the close of the decade is near and the US government will soon be hiring census takers I thought it would be interesting to see how many members of the SC community would be interested in a job as a census-taker.

I meant this question primarily for US citizens but I suppose they take censuses (censi?) in other nations as well so feel free to reply.

You mean, actually, physically meeting people and talking to them, like in person? *shudder* * smile *

What does the job entail exactly? Someone told me that there was an 800 number you could call to get the job.

How much money could census takers possibly make?

I was under the impression that it was a 'work at home' type of thing... the person that told me about it said it was decent second income pay.

I would get the job of counting people in crack houses.

milktree: I have a friend in NYC who made about $40,000 for eight or nine months' work for the 1990 census. He was mostly going to people's houses (those who hadn't yet returned their forms after a certain period of time) and helping them fill out and return their forms. He had a partner that went with him into the more unsavory neighborhoods. He did work long hours, but still, he made really good money for an unskilled worker just out of high school.

I'll bet Census takers get similar receptions to door-to-door salesmen and Jevoha's Witnesses.

I dunno, I'd love to answer the census and blow the curve.

jonathan: I keep getting these survey cards from the Christian Coalition because I'm a Republican. They assume that all Republican's are social conservatives. I intentionally fill them out and send them in because I'm socially liberal and define myself as a Liberal Republican. I enjoy blowing their curve.

We do the Census every five years up here in the Great White North. I'd love to do it sometime.

I cringe at the very idea of knocking on the doors of strangers
