yes, it's terrible... I feel especially odd about it in light of the fact that most of the news services are running mad cow disease scare stories as their top headlines instead of it...

yes, that's a good point. But I think that also has to do with the fact that we're still living. Since the people are allready dead, people figure they rather hear about what might be harmfull to them.

I suspect that mad cow disease sells more ads than dead Iranians...

yes, that's pretty much it. I mean, the news networks are a business, just like everything else. They have to turn a profit somehow. But hey, it beats the alternative: government run media.

I didn't hear about this, but it saddens me to hear of any natural disaster. Unfortunately (or fortunately, however you look at it), I don't have satellite or cable. My TV doesn't even pick up local antenna stations, because I live in a deep valley with mountains on all four sides of me, so I don't hear about any news until I log on to the internet and read it.

It passed me by. I'm cold like that. Not proud of it - just the way things are.

Our newspaper headlines were about the Queens Corgi getting killed by Princess Anne's Bull Terrier.
20,000 dead Iranians made it to the middle pages.

I haven't tuned into much news in the last week, so I didn't really hear the story, so I didn't feel much concern about it. I don't have anything against Iranians, though. Maybe we could help them recover and this would improve our relations...

Yes & No, especially when it's innocent people's deaths. However, We all start dying when we are born. You can't have life without death. In addition, I firmly believe that natural disasters, are Mother Nature's way of saying "F-YOU!!! Quit F-ing with me and raping me of what I provide freely, yet you selfish f-ing people keep abusing." It's also a form of population control for the world.

I hadn't heard about it before this survey, but yes, it does bother me. Anytime a large( or small) number of people die I'll be saddened, no matter their race.

Yes, of course it did. It also saddened me to hear of the children that died in the mudslide in California recently as well. They still haven't recovered all the bodies. * frown *

Yes, it's sad. But it doesn't weigh heavily on my mind, and that doesn't seem right. Each time I'm reminded of it, I feel sad, but I forget very quickly and don't really think about it.

You should read a better paper - in The Guardian, the Iran earthquake was the only news on the frontpage and the next 4-5 pages were completely taken up by it.

I keep seeing bits about "mad cow disease" on CNN and Fox News (which has to be the *worst* news channel in the western world) and they never cal it anything but mad cow disease. Here, everyone but the tabloids call it BSE, apart from the odd news report where its alternative name gets thrown in. I know we've been living with it for a lot longer than the US, but I would think that a good 60% of people in the street would be able to tell you what BSE and CJD stood for. Are the "better" news channels there being a bit more scientific?

the USDA calls it BSE, too.

I don't know if there are any better news channels here! * frown *

I think the media here tries to put everything in a way where the least educated folks don't have to think.

People die every day. I don't get too bent out of shape over it. I can't say that it had any more or less effect on me than any other disaster where lots of people died. Earthquakes are unavoidable. I suppose that when it is a man-made disaster, it makes me a little upset because it is avoidable, but I don't grieve over the loss of life so much either way...

Iranian or not, people are people and it's sad to see so many people suffering from loss of family members. It's really tragic and makes me all the more grateful to have been born in Canada AND on the Canadian Shield (among the oldest rock in the world - hence, undisturbed!).
