Think of a male and a female name for each letter of the alphabet.

My husband and I are expecting (I just found out!), and we're going to take suggestions for names. Keep in mind, our last name is Hand. (So that means no "Richard N." suggestions!)
Be creative, and be kind!

Thanks. He loves his name, but the only drawback is that it's hard for a 5-year-old to learn to spell. Most of the time, he goes by T.J. anyway. His crazy ex-dad wanted to name all of our children after members of The Who. Thank goodness we only had the one before we divorced, or I'd have had one named Entwistle, one named Daltrey (although that one's not so bad) and one named Moon!
Amanda
(reply to sonikJ) posted 29-Dec-2003 1:19am
Oh no! That'd have been pretty bad. All of your kids named after The Who. Your son does have a cute name, though. At least that one's not bad. I can imagine it's hard for him to learn to spell. But he'll get the hang of it eventually. At least when someone yells out his name, he knows they are talking to him. My name's Amanda and when people yell it out in public (or when they used to in school) I never know if they're talking to me or someone else. It's so common!

I wish people were more adventerous in naming their kids. It would solve the problem of those 20 Amandas, 20 Alexes, 20 Daves, and such names that we have now.

I know how you feel. There was usually at least one other Amanda in my classes. I went by Mandi when I was younger (still do to to some people), but then another girl would go by Mandi. In 5th grade I went by my middle name, but got mad because my teachers wouldn't pronounce it correctly. I'd correct them everyday, but by the next day they'd have it wrong again.

Chris is a pretty common name. I've dated 3 guys named Chris and know a whole lot more.

Ahh... You wouldn't believe this guy! As a person, I really like him but I can't stand to work with him. He's disorganized, and so are his partners so he blames everything on them. "No one told me!" Is his famous line or "Where's the docket?" If I had an employee that said: "Well I don't know!" as often as he does - I'd fire him! He's the production manager - I think it's his job to find out!! He's from the nylon socks business and used to be a buyer, that's how he met his partner and ended up in the printing business. He doesn't understand many aspects of the trade so he often asks why not; then we have to waste our time doing whatever it is just to show him why it doesn't work!

At our daughter's wedding, I had to really concentrate on not breaking down and bawling when she walked down the aisle (I never saw so many teary eyes at a wedding!) so I used my boss' name as a mantra; "Marcus, Marcus, Marcus, Marcus, Marcus...." I really worked!!
freebird
(reply to Irene007) posted 26-Feb-2004 10:34am
you are right it is HIS job to find out these things not for the others to have to show him. Has he admitted he knows nothing about this trade? He should come right out to his partner and admit he needs some training or education about what it is that he is supposed to be doing. It takes away from productivity if you are having to stop your jobs and see that he understands. It must bug you to have a boss that knows less about the business than you do.

(reply to freebird) posted 26-Feb-2004 6:23pm
You're telling me! When we get drunk at Christmas time, he'll admit that he's wrong - the rest of the year, it's his partners' fault.
Picture this; you walk in for the first time and in the main office there's an old man sleeping in a chair with his cane leaning against his leg. In front of him, is the only guy who really works; is the estimator but he's not there half of the time because he's also the salesman. Next to him, is a young kid listening to stupid music chatting on MIRC most of the day. Further, in the back end of the room is a wheel chair, a walker and another cane. This office is not the tidiest but the one behind that is a plethora of paper and a mishmash of office furniture collecting all manner of things (personal items, forgotten paper work, last Christmas wrapping paper... Junk!) - This is the accounting department. There used to be a couch in the reception area but it has been moved to the accounting office so the guy in the walker (wheelchair) can watch TV when he's bored. From the reception area, you can see the kitchen (I don't use it anymore...). They have the tiniest, most ancient fridge I've ever seen and next to nothing fits in it so all their lunches clutter the table in plastic bags. The sink always has dirty dishes and the dish rack is never empty. I have my own fridge that I bought for myself and I eat in my office - which happens to be the most organized in the whole building! Oh yeah! There's also an exercise ball in the kitchen!
Tell me honestly - what impression would you leave with after visiting that place?
Let me help you situate yourself; the old man sleeping in the chair is the widowed grandfather who doesn't want to stay home alone, the guy with the walker and wheelchair is his son who is the owner (Marcus' partner), the accountant is the owner's wife and their daughter answers the phone - not from the reception area, mind you but from the back office where she can read her paper or talk on the phone without being noticed. The kid listening to bad music is the youngest son and the estimator is the other son. They're Italians... The office kitchen is just an extension of Mom and Dad's place so no one cleans the place until Mom has time. Between going for her husband's therapy sessions (he had a stroke - that explains the wheel chair, walker and cane but the other cane belongs to the grandfather just because he's old!), the accounting and feeding everyone, I think she's Super Mom! I swear, the place looks like a rehab center... So unprofessional. Marcus just likes to keep busy at the back with the production and leaves it to them to run the rest of the business. I wrote a 9 page letter to the older son, I was quite upset but he admitted to me that Marcus was his Dad's partner and he can't do anything about it - his Dad is the type that no one can tell him what to do and he's never wrong. He's "ig-nernt"! He can even pronounce the word "with" properly - he says "whiff" and his father - forget about it; he's been here for 50 years and still can't speak either language intelligently!

Wow! I'm really off on a rant here... Sorry for dumping on you like that!

I am surprised that any work gets done--are you doing it all? I feel for you. Does the reception area have this cluttered, lived in look also? If it does, I can't imagine what the clients who come in think. I would not like to work with any of my family--I'd probably kill one of them. I think that having the entire family in a workplace is not conducive to good business practice. But then again that is only my opinion. Good Luck girl, you are gonna need it there at that madhouse. Don't eat in the kitchen---oh---you may get something ugly. Good plan buying your own fridge and eating in your office.

I know I dog a lot about the place but believe it or not - there are some benefits... Where else can you work and your boss tolerates you coming in at "around" 9 Am (I usually make it before 9:30), take 1 to 2 hours lunch, leave early or work late and be allowed to drink beer after hours while working, tell your boss to fudge off (I say that to Marcus) and get away with (or should I say "whiff") it? I do my job and to them, that's all that counts... They know full well that I could find a job very easily and they also know that they could replace me but.... they don't really want to and I don't really want to either - we've become quite comfortable with each other. The "estimator" son is surely the one that will have control one day and I work really well with him...now... (It wasn't so great in the beginning but I won his respect and vice-versa). I think we're both biding our time for the day when papa retires - I'm sure there will be some major changes. In fact, since Papa has been ill - the place has improved, somewhat, but Papa's still hangs around though he's not involved in much of the day to day stuff; he keeps trying.

It's a special place (known in the trade as a "schlock-house") and it takes special people to work there. That's what's most sad - they have a few, very good employees there and they fail to use their knowledge for the company's benefit or they fail to show their appreciation of their work. To them, all employees are blood-sucking whiners. I know this because they tell me - even though I'm part of the production, I'm not considered "one of them" because I work in the front with the bosses. And the people at the back think I'm an ass-kissing, butt-scratching employee because I have my own fridge and come in when I want and get to "play" with a computer all day long! Only the people who don't know me think that but most know me because I make it a point to make the rounds - say hi to everyone and keep them on my side. I want to work with a team to produce our jobs and I want them to tell me what they need from me to make their jobs easier and I want them there for me when I want something from them. Marcus once told me to stay away from from the employees at the back. What he really wanted was for me to stay away from the new guy who was was hired from a good shop on the South Shore but he preferred to work with us because it was within walking distance of his home. He would rather walk 15 min. to work than drive 1 hour and he's a great operator - he makes that machine sing (he operates a Bobst which is a die cutting machine) and he's a great asset to this company. Marcus only asked me to stay away because another employee complained that I kept the new guy from his work - oh... did I mention that the one doing the complaining was the husband of the owner's daughter? It's all in the family and the son-in-law is the most butt-stupid person I have ever met! Hmmm... If you look at the people there, most are Italian and black. The Italians are there because of the family and the blacks are there because of Marcus (he's from the Islands) so they sort of created a company to provide jobs for their family and friends! What the f... am I doing there?? I'm not Italian, nor black and am not related by marriage... maybe I do a good job! I sure love my job, I just wish it was with another company that printed boxes but then I'd have to work for that real professional place on the South Shore too and I don't want to travel that far either...

Oh freebird, I feel so much better! Thanks for listening to me... * smile *

It does sound like a crazy place to work but if you like your job, then you should stay. I turned down a job at a University as a secretary because I was tired of driving to a town that was 36 miles away every day. I did that for two years while I worked in that town at a job corps center. Unfortunately for you there is way too many "friends" and "family" there. But I am sure that you are pretty damn good at what you do, if you pretty much have free reign. I think it is a good idea that you make the rounds in the back with the other employees (on the production line) this is a good practice and teamwork is always a good thing for all the employees that ensures quality and makes the work environment better for all, and it looks like that is what you want also. I hope you hang in there, if you love this job, it makes sense, but if you ever need to rant and let it off your chest, I am here to listen, My advice may not always be so great, but I try. btw: my real name is Maria and you can call me that if you like. ---------freebird (Maria) * smile *

Maria? That sounds Italian!! * laughing out loud *

Yesterday, as I walked into the main office to question something about a job; I was thinking of what I had written the night before and wished that you could see what I was seeing! It was just like I wrote; the old man in the chair with his cane, the kid on MIRC (trying to look busy), the walker, cane and wheelchair with their owner at the desk... I walked into the office with a big smirk on my face and had trouble erasing it! No one paid attention - they think I'm weird anyway!

See how dumping on you made me smile? Thanks Maria!

no problem I understand completely. Besides I don't think you're wierd I think they may be No I am not Italian--I am hispanic. It does sound Italian doesn't it? We don't have any Italians in this state or at least I haven't come across any. But some of these hispanic families are just the same believe me. They will have the entire family involved in the business. Personally I would not want to work with any of my family. * smile * hope you have a great day!

Remember the old man with a cane in my office (the Dad of the guy with the wheelchair - my boss)? He died last Saturday... He had a stroke about a month ago and he wasn't breathing on his own and just got worst; he chose to die on the same day his wife died - 7 years ago!
As unprofessional as his presence was, I'm sad and happy to see him go. Sad because I know he will be missed by his family and happy because he will be once again with his beloved wife. He really was a nice old man. * frown *

Everyone has a coffee cup at work, including Grandpa so I hid his away to remove another reminder of him from his son in the office... Somehow, I feel guilty about this... * wry smile *

Oh that's sad. Don't feel guilty, if he asks why it's missing just tell him what you told me, that you removed it because it was another reminder of Grandpa. Then ask if he wants it and tell him where it is. I think you did something from the heart and you should not feel guilty about it. I would have done the same thing.
