| Wicksy | (reply to Zang) posted 11-Dec-2003 5:30pm Did you do the 3 previous surveys on this? |
| Zang | (reply to Wicksy) posted 11-Dec-2003 5:46pm No. Those were all Iseult's. When she did the last one, I told her how much I liked them and she suggested I try one. I waited a little while first. The worst part was fudging up when I tried to post the answers. I had most of it typed, and then I tried to close a pop-up and clicked the wrong x! I think Iseult's were a little easier maybe. I wasn't trying to be difficult. I probably have more obscure tastes... |
| Wicksy | (reply to Zang) posted 11-Dec-2003 5:48pm How did you decide on who to pick? |
| Iseult | (reply to Zang) posted 11-Dec-2003 5:58pm Only one. His name is Zang. No, really, you've gotta tell me, I don't know. We here in Ontario tend to be very Toronto and sometimes Ontario cenralized, so all we talk about is Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, and Shania Twain. |
| Zang | (reply to icurok) posted 11-Dec-2003 6:10pm Absolutely fudging amazing! You did fabulous...there's one little thing though...I put four Canadians in there who are from my home town of Vancouver. You missed Quincy's sidekick Robert Ito, but mis-identified the other three as Americans! Douglas Coupland hung around in the same social group as me back in the eighties, he's about three months older than me. He was born on a Canadian military base in Germany, but grew up in Vancouver. William Gibson was born in the US, but has lived in Vancouver for more than thirty years. He always looks like he's dreading the possibility that someone might come up and speak to him. Rae Dawn Chong (whose father Tommy was born in Edmonton, Alberta and played in sleazy rock 'n' roll bands in Vancouver bars, back in the sixties) was born in Vancouver two weeks before me. |
| Zang | (reply to Wicksy) posted 11-Dec-2003 6:17pm It was more or less random. I just typed the names of people that came to mind. Most of them (but certainly not all) are people I admire. Towards the end, I thought it might be a little too obscure so I added some names that I thought people would know. I put four people from Vancouver. I tried to mix up the nationalities a bit, Iseult always does that. Icurok really cleaned up! He even got Frank Lentini! I didn't expect anyone to get that one! And if anyone did, I thought it might be mandy! |
| Zang | (reply to Iseult) posted 11-Dec-2003 6:19pm Douglas Coupland, Rae Dawn Chong, Robert Ito & William Gibson. |
| thevelvetcure | posted 11-Dec-2003 7:49pm Due to the version III, I'm only answering the ones that I can relate the people to, as opposed to recognition Barbara Streisand - South Park Dave Brubeck - Musician (I think) Elliot Gould - Actor HP Lovecraft - Writer of Cathouli (I know the spelling is WAY off) John Bonham - Only the drummer of one of the world's greatest bands Led Zeppelin John Cleese - Damn funny (Monty Python) Karl Marx - Socialist/Idealist Miles Davis - Blues Musician Robert Ito - (not judge Ito from the OJ Simpson case as I thought) upon looking him up on line, I remember him now though. Salvador Dali - Great surrealist painter (there's a museum in my city Vanessa Williams - Singer, though I think an actress, so one of these Wayne Gretzky - Used to play for the NY Rangers ice hockey team, breaking numerous records |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to bill) posted 11-Dec-2003 7:55pm I do the same thing, on every one of these surveys. This one I didn't even see Steve Martin (of course I know him |
| bill | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 11-Dec-2003 8:11pm I missed John Cleese! |
| Traviedoll | posted 11-Dec-2003 11:27pm I feel bad about only knowing two people |
| Traviedoll | posted 11-Dec-2003 11:29pm wait! I know John Cleese too!! |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to bill) posted 12-Dec-2003 2:19pm kinda funny that we both missed a prominent comedian |
| Iseult | (reply to Zang) posted 12-Dec-2003 5:23pm I've never heard of any of those people. What did they do? |
| Zang | (reply to Iseult) posted 12-Dec-2003 8:56pm Douglas Coupland wrote "Generation X". Rae Dawn Chong is an actress, I only ever saw her in "Quest For Fire" (1981), but she's been in lots of stuff since. You may have heard of her dad "Tommy Chong" from "Cheech & Chong". He's from Edmonton, but lived in Vancouver during the sixties. Robert Ito was Quincy's sidekick on the TV show. William Gibson wrote "Neuromancer", which kicked off this new sci-fi thing called "Cyber-punk". |
| Iseult | (reply to Zang) posted 12-Dec-2003 10:35pm Yeah, I heard of Tommy Chong. I never saw any of the Cheech and Chong, but I see him on That's 70's Show, regularly. |
| sonikJ | posted 13-Dec-2003 10:45pm Too many to mention, although my favorite on the list is Wayne Gretzky! |
| icurok | (reply to Zang) posted 15-Dec-2003 1:48pm Thanks! I'll admit to a bit of sneaky fence sitting when it came to the Canadians. I opted for he label 'American' rather than say, US or Canadian as in some cases I honestly didn't know. I even had a sneaking suspicion that Steve Martin was Canadian (but only because a lot of the best SNL regulars are). I sort of know who Robert Ito is, but as I've only ever seen Quincy once or twice and didn't pay much attention to the end credits I didn't know his name. I don't even know who played Quincy!! The Frank Lentini one was a complete fluke. Channel 4 commissioned a series of programmes a few months back about disability. The theme was about seeing the people behind the disability. Matt Fraser is an actor and writer who was born with physical deformities as a result of his mother being prescribed thalidomide during the pregnancy. He presented a programme called "Freakshow" in which he travelled to the Coney Island circuses to learn what went on and what life was like for the acts. Because of the physical similarities, he felt more closely drawn to Stanley Berent AKA 'Sealo the Seal Boy' - he even wrote and performed a one play about the man - but Frank Lentini was also mentioned. |
| Zang | (reply to icurok) posted 15-Dec-2003 9:15pm Steve Martin did start his television career in Toronto, but he's a Texan. Quincy was played by Jack Klugman who also starred in four Twilight Zone episodes and the TV version of The Odd Couple. I bet Channel Four didn't mention Frank Lentini's extra penis, did they? |
| autumnlight | posted 15-Dec-2003 11:17pm Barbra Streisand, Benjamin Disraeli, Elliott Gould, John Cleese (I love him!), Karl Marx, Kris Kristofferson, Norman Cook, Salvador Dali, Steve Martin. That's it. |
| icurok | (reply to Zang) posted 16-Dec-2003 4:12am I think they did actually, but Channel 4 gets away with a lot because of its remit as an alternative channel. |
| twest49 | posted 27-Dec-2003 3:32am any Canadian should recognize Gretzky, he's the best hockey player ever!! |
