| Biggles | posted 1-Nov-2003 2:40pm That's a dangerous question. But.....hmmm. I'd quite like my tea served up for me right now so I don't have to bother cooking it and can just eat and collapse into bed. I got up at 6am this morning to go on a build in London. We were doing quite labour intensive stuff today, carting plasterboard across the building site, up the stairs and into place. Plus lots of hammering. Some of the plasterboard was reasonably light - two people could carry it alright, but the sound plasterboard was *so* heavy! My arm, fingers and neck are all bruised from carrying it! |

And then on October 15th I had to have an emergency appendectomy and haven't been to the gym since then. So now I've gained weight and I still can't go back to the gym because after walking for a few minutes it still hurts where my appendix was. I was in such good shape! |

| judgescratch | (reply to Galomorro) posted 4-Nov-2003 8:18am Yes, I do have health coverage, but, I've been where you are. It IS very unsettling to not have health coverage. It's only been but a few years but I was in your predicament. The cheapest health insurance I was able to find as an individual was through EmpireBlueCrossBlueShield (in New York state) and it cost me $100. per month. It was catastrophic only, but, I did have piece of mind knowing that I was covered should anything happen. I don't know what state you are in, but if Blue Cross has a similar program there, it may be worth looking into...it was for me. The thing is is, it seems like the crux of the problem isn't the coverage as much as having a permanent position. Tough one. I'm trying to strategize right now with that one, as well. |
| Galomorro | (reply to judgescratch) posted 4-Nov-2003 10:13am I have no extra money at all to spend on insurance. I'm in California. My goal is definitely permanent employment. |

| Biggles | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 4-Nov-2003 4:12pm It's handed in now - I can look forward to him slagging it off in my tute on Thursday. I also handed in a neural circuits of escape responses essay for my tute tomorrow. Oh no! I'd forgotten I have a tute tomorrow I have 4 Environment essays up for grabs for the next 4 weeks though and a bunch of practical write-ups! |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to Biggles) posted 4-Nov-2003 4:16pm It sounds like your practical write-ups are similar to my CD-Assignments. Summarize and analyze two websites (from a list) each week, answer a whole slue of questions from the chapter & *more websites* fun fun |
| Biggles | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 4-Nov-2003 4:19pm Both my write-ups are animal behaviour - the first is about fish-shoaling and there's lots of stats to be done. The second is about kittiwakes 'powking' and doing other behaviour. Not fascinating |
| thevelvetcure | (reply to dora) posted 4-Nov-2003 5:05pm It's not my fault, Biggles gave you your cold, not me. |
| Biggles | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 4-Nov-2003 5:11pm Not me! I was sick, not suffering from a cold! |
| Galomorro | (reply to judgescratch) posted 4-Nov-2003 5:21pm I also want my own house and yard or deck as I am a "frustrated farmer" and have little space to put plants where I live now. |
| Biggles | posted 4-Nov-2003 5:57pm Bed. Now. But first I have to put some t-shirts in to soak. I've run out |
| dora | (reply to thevelvetcure) posted 4-Nov-2003 6:22pm Biggles?? No, it was my boyfriend! |
| judgescratch | (reply to Galomorro) posted 5-Nov-2003 10:45am Hey! I used work as a farmer. It was the best job I ever had. I worked on several sheep operations in New York State. I got to the point where I want to have my own sheep operation but that requires a chunk of change. So, I went back to school to make myself more marketable and now I am working for "the man". As stated before, I have a contracted position so I have to wait....either for a permanent position here or for some other company to be impressed with the credentials that I have. But it is a goal, though. By the way, on a different note, I used to live in Santa Cruz...you anywhere nearby?? |

| Galomorro | (reply to judgescratch) posted 6-Nov-2003 9:57am So where do you live now? How long has it been since you lived in Santa Cruz? I'm in San Francisco. I'd like to try again with a lemon tree-the one I had in my kitchen didn't make it. I now have a bay laurel tree I got at a farmers market -- LOVE farmers markets -- and so far it seems to be doing okay. |
| judgescratch | (reply to Galomorro) posted 6-Nov-2003 11:34am I lived in Santa Cruz from 1994 - 1995. I'm still in contact with my housemate, but it's been about 2 years since we have seen eachother. Now, I'm in the state of Delaware...as far as I know, no lemon trees here! Attitudes/People/Lifestyles are very very different on the west coast than on the east coast. Either way has its advantages, though. |
| Hyena | (reply to Amanda) posted 6-Nov-2003 1:16pm Thank-you - I thought that people might ostracise me for saying that. The thing is he started out being jerky and then I figured him out (I think) and he got soft on me - it was fun to joke with him. |
| Galomorro | (reply to judgescratch) posted 6-Nov-2003 7:24pm So how are the E Coast and W Coast mainly different as you see it? What are your advantages of living in Delaware? (I've never been outa the West myself.) |
| Amanda | (reply to Hyena) posted 6-Nov-2003 10:31pm I think a lot of people took Richard the wrong way, but that's not something I dwell on. I'm still in contact with him and still get to enjoy that. I will warn you that some people may ostracize you for being a "Richard47 fan". After I spoke up for him in the forum I noticed that several people (who shall remain nameless) stopped talking to me. It bothered me at first, but now I don't really care. That's their problem, not mine. You know? |
| judgescratch | (reply to Galomorro) posted 7-Nov-2003 8:25am You know how they say that we all have a unique aspect that is both a curse and a gift? Well, the coasts are like that. What I loved so much about living in CA is that everything was EASY, my life just fell into place without much effort because there were so many helpful and giving people who weren't competive/protective/in the rat race. Along with that sentiment was a laid-back air which made things fun and easy, but, I never got any work done. At that time I held a bachelors degree and I was perfectly content making less than minimum wage selling Birkenstocks at a store in Aptos. I started knitting and sewing projects which I couldn't get motivated to finish. I knew that I could move further in terms of career but, since I didn't really have to, I didn't come up with any ideas how. Having grown up in Philadelphia, I think that I felt these things pretty strongly because that casual energy wasn't where I came from. On the east coast, the mentality is down-home and neighborhood oriented. Groovy grass-roots types of activities are not as main stream as in the West, so, a brotherhood feeling brings people together in these types of venues, i.e. independent theatres, funky dance companies, etc. There is a lot more variation here. But, I've encountered a lot more competition/rat race mentality here than on West coast. I'm sure it's there, but the ambiance is just different. The blank canvas on which life ocurrs is just different. As for Delaware, I've been here only but a few months. People here are very proud of their state, but they are not exclusionary about it like some New Englanders can be (many apologies New Englanders, I love it up there, and I would love to live up there, but I've experienced some 'tude up there, too, just stating an observation). So, I conclude with a question, have you any plans to venture to the midwest/southwest/northeast/southeast any time in your future? |
| Galomorro | (reply to judgescratch) posted 7-Nov-2003 10:13am I never was aware of any of this. Thanx for your views. Interesting! No, I've no plans to visit any other state nor country at all. I don't like traveling, can't afford it, and don't really have any desire to go anywhere else in the states. If I could travel anywhere, really quick and easy and with lots of money to spend, I'd like to visit Lisbon, Portugal most of all. |
| Hyena | (reply to Amanda) posted 8-Nov-2003 1:03am Let him know that I miss him. I noticed his absence right away because I used to check in all the time to sc and he would always have written me something. Then he was gone - and it seems like there were barely any people on sc for a while - it looks to be picking up now. I welcome the ostracization if it happens - it's always fun to see these kinds of "human-nature" type behaviour in action. It's great that you had the courage to stick up for him - I could have had the opportunity too but I just let it slide (I never use forum but I could have said something in a survey). |
| Amanda | (reply to Hyena) posted 8-Nov-2003 1:20am I'll be sure to let him know for you. He's really a decent person once you get to know him. Talking to him through email or on the phone are totally different than talking to him on SC. |
| wolfchik9 | posted 8-Nov-2003 1:48am A job! |
| Biggles | (reply to Amanda) posted 8-Nov-2003 11:10am Has he been back since? Under a different username? I did wonder about BarryM but thought it couldn't be because you seemed to know him...but now...? I don't care if you want to stay in touch with him - it's up to you So, uh, how are you? |
| LindaH | (reply to Amanda) posted 8-Nov-2003 1:32pm So, why did he act so different on SC? What was his fascination with provoking people? |
| Amanda | (reply to Biggles) posted 8-Nov-2003 4:32pm No, you're not one of the people I was talking about. There are several people who seem to make it a point not to talk to me anymore. Not that I really care. I was just telling Hyena what to expect. BarryM and Richard47 are not the same person. They do know each other, though. |
| Amanda | (reply to LindaH) posted 8-Nov-2003 4:33pm Personally, I don't really think he provoked anybody. I think that he had different opinions on a lot of things and people didn't like that. I know he said things that might have been out of line, but he didn't mean to piss anybody off. He just said what was on his mind. |
| Biggles | (reply to Amanda) posted 8-Nov-2003 4:40pm Ah, they seemed to have similar sense of humour |
| LindaH | (reply to Amanda) posted 8-Nov-2003 5:15pm I think a lot of it was deliberately inaccurate, though. There's no way he could have really meant some of it. He acted really sure about things that were plainly absurd. There's something weird about that. |
| Amanda | (reply to LindaH) posted 8-Nov-2003 9:30pm I admit that some of what he said was way out in left field somewhere, but everyone thinks differently. I can't fault him (or anybody else) for what they think or how they feel. You know what I mean? |
| LindaH | (reply to Amanda) posted 8-Nov-2003 9:58pm Yeah, but some people are so far out in left field in addition to being obnoxiously sure about themselves (especially when it comes to other people) that it's offensive. You don't tell a person that they have avoidant personality when you don't know them, or how they interact with people face to face. That's so presumptive, it's absurd. I fault people for that kind of presumptiveness. |
| Amanda | (reply to LindaH) posted 8-Nov-2003 11:55pm I can understand where you are coming from. I don't know everything Richard47 said to people here. I have read some of what he said and I do agree that he went a little too far at times. But he was always kind to me. Sure, he made jokes, but I took them for what they were worth. I can only judge him based on what he has said to me, which never was out of line. I'm not saying that I agree with everything he has said, but I think there was some truth in a lot of what he said. Maybe he hit home with people and it scared them. I'm *not* saying that's the case with you. I don't know you well enough to know and I also don't know what kind of interaction the two of you had. Anyhow, I can only speak from my personal experiences with him and from those, I feel like he really is a good person with a kind heart. |
| LindaH | (reply to Amanda) posted 9-Nov-2003 11:26am I think there was truth to some of what he said. I agreed with him sometimes. But he was so sure of himself when he analysed people, it was insulting when he was wrong. |
