| Atzilut | posted 21-Jan-1998 10:36am Before the "hey, where's monitor lizard and Thompson's gazelle on the list" comments start flying, I'll assume Bill meant "OF THE TWO LISTED which do you prefer." As I've lived with two houserabbits and a hedgehog, I am well acquainted with nonstandard house pets. we never had dogs when I was growing up cuz my dad was terrified of them. I had one cat (Henrietta) who I got when she was a kitten and I was 5. She left us when I was 18 and it *really* took me a long time to get over it. Even now it's hard for me to be around cats. But, as pets I do prefer them. I have met a few really cool dogs, I have to concur with Bill that big (dumb) soft mellow friendly dogs are good. I've recently met a few Jack Russel Terriers who have really impressed me. Though I'm told they're often too smart for anyone's good and very needy. A relative of mine and his wife have had a succession of Springer Spaniels who have, without exception been spoiled rotten to the point of being no fun to be around. People should remember the following maxim: "Children are not Pets, Pets are not Children." Yikes, I was chatty this AM. Sorry Folks. |
| fiore | posted 21-Jan-1998 1:14pm We used to have a cat. It was pretty cool. I think dogs are smarter. |
| jcdino | posted 21-Jan-1998 1:28pm I love both, and have one of each, though I guess I prefer cats if I had to choose. Unfortunately I can't have them with me where I am at the moment. |
| vanadium | posted 21-Jan-1998 2:16pm I put dog. I'm allergic to cats, unfortunately, but even so, there's something about a pet that loves you unreservedly. I live right now with a hedgehog, and while she's sweet in her own peabrained way, it would be nice to have a social animal around the house. |
| elijahblue | posted 21-Jan-1998 4:56pm Parrots!! They are beautiful and smart and funny. I can't wait until I can afford to buy a pair and have the time to care for them. Of the two choices listed, cats. They are beautiful, slinky and mischievous and I've never met one I didn't like. I also like big fluffy cuddly dumb dogs. We had the best Irish Setter/Golden Retriever mix, Harriet, who passed away a few years ago. Dumb as a doorpost, but a great pal. |
| Dahlia | posted 21-Jan-1998 5:45pm I put "dog" because in general I do tend to prefer having a dog.. but right now I have a cat. I have never had one before, but he was a poor little stray so I took him in. He's an amazing cat. I love him. I wouldn't trade him for anything. But then again, he seems to think he's a dog. |
| mozzer | posted 21-Jan-1998 5:51pm I HATE DOGS ! |
| KenShingo | posted 22-Jan-1998 1:22pm Can't stand the smell that cats produce. |
| zoomie | posted 22-Jan-1998 11:22pm Cats - just ask mine, and the three foster cats that live in our house. Cats are much easier to look after, for a sedentary person. We've had really bad luck with dogs - we've owned 3 over the years, and not one was housetrained properly. Cats are not necessarily more independent than dogs - they're just as affectionate, without the fawning. They're much cleaner - and many are likely as intelligent as some overbred purebred dogs. |
| Jaime | posted 23-Jan-1998 5:17am Dogs! Sorry, but cat seems too egoist for me. There are hundreds of things you can't do with a cat, wich I love to do with my dog. A specially like Beagles, they have the best personality I've seen ever in any life form. |
| Timmi | posted 23-Jan-1998 2:53pm I currently have two cats, but given a different situation (more land and my own home) I'd get dogs. |
| doom | posted 27-Jan-1998 11:34am Dogs are the best, but of course, I have seen several cats that come close to the playfulness of dogs. |
| weth | posted 29-Jan-1998 7:41pm A nice, old lap cat. Purrrrrrrr.... |
| Artemis | posted 1-Feb-1998 9:59pm To quote a very cool movie... CATS RULE AND DOGS DROOL!!!!!(no offense to dog lovers anywhere) |
| Pomeranian | posted 2-Feb-1998 7:10pm I am afraid of dogs but would love my own. I really love cats too but I am allergic to them. :( |
| gilly | posted 10-Feb-1998 1:47pm I'd love to live with someone that had a dog, but they're too much work for me right now. |
| mcarlos | posted 13-Feb-1998 6:38pm are dogs those smelly indiscriminately happy creatures? |
| milktree | posted 23-Feb-1998 7:08pm currently cat, but that's because I live in the city and don't have the space for a dog. I also have a swell cat now. If I lived on 4 acres of land, I'd have both. |

| Dolemite | posted 1-Mar-1998 4:40pm Dogs are smarter. They like to play with their owners, as well. Otherwise, I have no real preference. |
| nbarone | posted 30-Apr-1998 3:53pm i've really enjoyed having both, but cat's are much simpler to care for and don't require as much time |
| lelle | posted 15-May-1998 3:49pm I have two cats, so I guess cat... But I do like both. |
| daver | posted 15-May-1998 4:56pm Dogs are useful; cats are independent; my browser forces me to choose one... |
| jjg | posted 17-May-1998 4:21pm Dog. I positively hate cats. The little mice chomping bastards. |
| bill | posted 18-May-1998 10:56pm A cat's emotional range is more sophisticated, so I prefer them. But I do like dogs, especially large, soft, mellow dogs. |
