There's usually something entertaining on the Food Network, and I love to cook. It'll do. |

One of Fox, HBO or Showtime. I don't really have a favourtie channel... I don't think the majority of programming on any of them is very good. Fox, HBO and Showtime are the ones which I watch the most. |

HBO has the most shows I watch, although my two favorite shows are on NBC and the WB. But I guess I'd take HBO, because it has the most good material. |

Comedy Central... HBO... the networks.... I can't pick just one, I use them all a little. |

Goodness! Either CBS or ABC, because they have a little of everything. ESPN would be good, but I wouldn't know what was going on outside the world of sports then. And Cartoon Network has very few good cartoons. |

Channel 4 - which shows most of the popular HBO programmes and has a good British shows too. Its the one I watch the most - although I have favourite programmes on Channel 5. |

I would say that the majority of the programs I watch are on NBC (channel 16 in my area), but I also prefer to watch the local/national news on ABC (channel 9 in my area), so I would say it's a tie between NBC/ABC. |

QTQ 10 "channel 10" in Brisbane. Most shows I like are on this channel. I don't have cable but if I did it would be HBO |

I can't decide. I like a lot of different channels. MTV, several HBOs, NBC, CBS, WB, TLC, The Discovery Channel, TNT, USA, and The Game Show Network just to name a few. |
Galomorro | | posted 28-Sep-2003 7:58pm |
None. When I used to have cable, I'd check out the few so-called "educational" channels but none were anywhere near what I wanted. I tried Discovery channel and PBS (we didn't get the history channel at that time). What really bugged me was that some of the kinds of educ. programming I was looking for on one of the PBS channels came on before daylight. I want actual educational programming that cost a lot of money in videotape catalogs and that are shown only in school settings. So I was left feeling frustrated because the kind of programming I wanted was either shown in the middle of the night or not shown at all, or very rarely. This is part of the reason why I finally gave up on cable as being too much $$$$ for the kinds of programming available. I think if people have to pay such high prices for cable, they should be able to choose their own fav. channels, and not have to be subject to a particular "package" picked out by the cable company. In fact, in the interest of educating the masses and making available better quality TV to everyone, all educational channels should be FREE to all, even if they are NOT cable channels. Kids and adults get too much junk TV and not enough quality stuff. I, however, have long been an advocate of educational (school-quality) videos, TV, and CD-Roms. |

Channel4 - it cuts things to death, but it does show them. It showed Babylon 5 and is showing The West Wing, Six Feet Under and Stargate SG1. It also makes good dramas sometimes (like The Deal which was on last night, about the relationship between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown) and has the best news of *any* channel ever.
I would miss BBC2 with its Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, Farscape and Buffy though. |
| msgman | | posted 29-Sep-2003 3:23pm |
Hmm. I think I'd have to choose between three: Channel 4 for news and documentaries, BBC2 for comedy, and Sky Sports 1 for football and cricket.
If I could cheat, and get my friends to video stuff for me from the channels I can't get, then I'd go for Sky Sports, as drama and comedy don't lose anything by being viewed a few days later but sport has to be live to be worth watching. |
LindaH | | posted 29-Sep-2003 4:08pm |
I think there needs to be a channel where all they do is nag at you and motivate you to get off the couch. When people find themselves in a vegging funk but can't seem to get moving, they flip to the nag channel. |

I so much gave up on anything interesting being put on the education channels that I forgot about them entirely. One of the best times I had was in the audio-video section of my old College library where I could choose from a bunch of educational stuff like Margaret Meade, the play "Waiting for Godot", operas, "Manufacturing Consent" (all time favourite so far). |

Galomorro | | (reply to Hyena) posted 30-Sep-2003 8:19pm |
Ah, you too would like to see better quality educational stuff on TV. It's such a waste! All those channels and nada worthwhile. I once saw a show years ago on one of the PBS channels that you would like. I wish now I had kept that old video. It was on Japanese literature. I have never seen anything like it since. Since you are interested in Japanese culture, did you ever see that one on Geishas? Another PBS special I think (do they call those no-commercial public broadcasting channels PBS all over the US?) I heard somewhere the Dish Network offers programs from other countries but I suppose it's prohibitively expensive. I have also looked in the public library, including the big main one, for good edu. videos but they are all really old -- like maybe they have a tutorial tape on MS-DOS or some other ancient computer software that is rarely used these days. I'd also like to see the libraries get some of those "Professor Video" CD-Roms for up-to-date instruction in various computer software; but then I have a Mac and something like this wouldn't be available in Mac format... Some of the "Biography" ones are good. |

I find the best radio and tv happens after midnight. It makes me wonder if were trying to provide sattelite material for Africa or something. It's 4am and I've been watching shows on astronomy. Another morning it could be ballet or how to compost. |
Galomorro |
Ah, so you've discovered this also. This is exactly what I found. If kids (and adults) had the midnight to dawn programming to listen to all day, it might make a difference in their TV-viewing habits of watching a lot of junk that does nothing for one's mind whatsoever. So they try to "fill up" the times when not as many people, and especially not as many kids, are watching TV with GOOD educational stuff, and save the junk TV for prime time. Wish there was something people could do about this. But probably most people don't care and prefer their junk TV. Just think of all the quality programming that does exist in all these various subjects -- music, science, lit, history, tutorials, etc. that they already have but don't let us know about. |

HBO or TLC.. can't decide. |

I like Cram, too. I also watch Funny Money and Friend or Foe. Sometimes I like watching the old game shows, like What's My Line and To Tell The Truth. I know, I'm a dweeb! |
ElvisFan67 | | (reply to Amanda) posted 1-Oct-2003 8:54pm |
Oh, no--you're not a dweeb at all. It thrills me to death to see young people interested in old stuff like that. |
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to Galomorro) posted 1-Oct-2003 9:03pm |
I think the idea behind prime time is for people to escape, reinforce their views, and have a remote family. Mine are 3rd Rock, Darma, and Gilmore Girls. It used to be touched by an angel, and x-files, with talk radio, spin city, and frasier inbetween. Simpsons have been good too. I evaluate how much of that sort of programming I will allow myself. When I'm in a slump, there's more of it, otherwise I'm too busy with projects. I'll watch an episode of a show new to me and decide then if I should turn it off when I next encounter it. I try to use the rule of thumb 'will my life be better a year from now for watching this show'. I turn the tv on for limited entertainment, but will keep it on if it's educational. Perhaps there are more people like me and broadcasters would be wise to fill 9-12 with educational stuff too after capturing attention. The news too is designed for consistent comfort; I don't care for it. |
Galomorro |
I used to really enjoy Third Rock!!! Laffed my fool head off! I did have my favorite sitcoms when I had cable -- not all that many of 'em. X-files I used to watch a lot too. I mainly listen to the news, not watch it, since the one channel I can get is not too clear. |

I saw a few programs on Geishas. There's a really good book - I forget the author - called "Lost Japan" published by Lonely Planet. It's good because the guy talks about Japanese culture - my description is so uninviting .... oh well, I loved it. It's a guy talking about Japanese culture, and he's really cool, and he's a foreigner but he's more immersed in Japan than most Japanese people, and he wore a kimono for a while, and he is paid to collect Japanese artifacts.... I got a lot out of it. |
Galomorro | | (reply to Hyena) posted 3-Oct-2003 11:31am |
