  COmmmon Tyyp os!

Which of these typing errors to you commonly make? This is different than a spelling or grammar error based on lack of knowledge. This is just fingers doing the wrong thing.

8I am such a randomly chaotic typist that I rarely make the same mistake twice
0I type poorly, but do so e-x-t-r-e-e-m-l-y slowly, and therefor do not make errors

my new keyboard doesn't seem to have n-key rollover so I'm making a lot more typos now.

I do all of these, but I also proofread fairly well in real-time, so mistakes only rarely stay in as far as the end of the sentence and even more rarely make it into something I perceive as a finished document, although I have to be careful not to let spellcheckers make me lazy. I'm a little bit more casual about email and SC comments :)

I am always so rushed that I make more mistakes than I should even though I am a good typist. I rush thru my email & then if I go back & reread it I am appalled at the typos I've made when I think it was perfect. I'm not a perfectionist, but those things really nag at me.

cute survey - I bet the spell checker went bananas with it though.

I have a utility that will change words I commonly misspell (teh instead of the) to the correct word with out my help. I know most current word processing programs do this, but the utility makes the corrections in all text applications. (Maybe someday I will actually load it, and use it.)

I had to give this survey good rating, just because of the last option.

Yes, in fact, the spell checking was a little difficult, b/c I really wanted to limit the typo-s to the intentional ones. It was hard to parse through the preview.I'm so glad it wasn't all blinking! I've aliased most of my common commands to two letter codes to limit my annoyance at my typo-s. So 'em' is emacs, 'pi' is pine, 'lo' is logout, etc.

romkey: what's an n-key rollover?

I'll mention that breakin gwords wrong is really just a special case of reversing lettres.

reversing letters and breaking wrong.. I will occasionally do the Caps thing or the two keys or having my fingers wrong etc.. I'll also throw in random extra letters too, but the most common are the letters and breaking. I am also so used to doing this that I proof read and then go back and fix the stuff (usually)

I am a very quick typist, but I make a lot of errors. I switch letters a lot, miss spaces and break words in the wrong place. I also misplace my right hand a lot, because it likes to fly around the keyboard, while the left hand stays put.

Most of these my brain error-checks before they are complete, which is to say that my finger is on the way to the delete key before I consciously see the error. So, while I make many of them fairly frequently (I just made three different ones in two words!), the final product is usually close to typo-free.

Mimi, apparently the commemorative pens the senators used to sign their oaths for the impeachment trial had exactly the same typo. Gillette (I think) offered to replace them, but got no takers, only orders for additional misprinted pens :)

Yeah, I've considered the touch typing class I took to be the most valuable course ever since I started using email freshman year of college.

I sometimes wish I could touch type now. Is it too late? I can type fast, but it's this weird thing I just invented because I type so much that I just got faster at it. I don't rest my hands on the keyboard, instead they hover and strike (which I know is bad because I miss), but I do use 4-6 fingers. I'm sure I could do better if I did touch typing.
eris
posted 28-Jan-1999 7:43pm

It is probably not too late now. I remember I used to type that way before I took a touch-typing class. There are lots of computer programs available for this. If I were doing it now, I would learn the Dvorak keyboard - it sounds much nicer, and with computers the only thing anyone types on anymore (well, almost), there is no reason not to.
hunter
posted 28-Jan-1999 8:03pm

And Dvorak is said to be a) faster and b) much easier on one's wrists. I keep trying to overcome inertia and learn that system.

I tipe horibly.

No, seriously, I think so fast that my fingers can't keep up and when they try, chaos follows. (Especially when my hands miss the home row...)

topper - n-key rollover is when you can press n-keys at one time and still get the correct keypresses. a lot of keyboards have 2-key rollover, so if you are press more than 2 keys at once then the keyboard may send the wrong codes. if you type fast, it's pretty easy to do that. unfortunately my new keyboard seems particularly susceptible to that problem.

romkey - I would worry about a keyboard that does n-key rollover. I suspect many games wouldn't work right (where you press more than one key at a time on purpose [e.g. left and down to go diagonal]). Of course, if it was an optional mode that a game could turn off or disregard...
romkey Survey Central Gold SubscriberBronze Star Survey CreatorSurvey Qualifier

bill - there are ways to deal with that - on a PC keyboard the keyboard itself actually just transmits a "scan code" for each key when the key is released or pressed. the keyboard driver in the BIOS or OS then translates that into ASCII. if you don't have n-key rollover then you'll probably get the wrong scan codes if you have too many keys pressed at once. games generally end up dealing in scan codes and not the ASCII codes, so they'll work correctly

buttons- ooh good one! I also get some of the most complicated errors in emacs when I think I'm holding down Shift, but am actually holding down Ctrl. Since I look at the keyboard when I type (instead of the screen), I can get pretty far into my messed up modifications before I notice, too.

hehe this is quite funny. I often do the misplacing hands, especially when the marked keys are in varying locations on different keyboards (such as between a mac and a pc). Since I don't often look at the monitor when I'm typing (but at the page I'm typing up), I've written whole sentences in total jibberish before I've realised.

I used to type dvorak, and it is so much faster and easier. I kept a spare keyboard around in which i rearranged all the letter to match. Dvorak was the only keyboard i learned by touch. I stopped using it because i was teaching resume writing and programming and did not wish to switch back and forth. Now the only reason i dont use it is because i don't have my original 'windows' discs. I wonder if a modern replacement for dvorak exists based on a more contemporary and thorough study of letter frequency and ergonomics.
