| bill | posted 5-Aug-2003 9:21pm mom has type 2... too many fat free cookie IMHO |
| ElvisFan67 | posted 5-Aug-2003 9:32pm I don't, but it runs in my family. My grandmother had it really bad. |
| Amanda | posted 5-Aug-2003 10:13pm No. I had gestational diabetes, though. Several members of my family members have diabetes, but I'm not sure what type. |
| mandy | posted 5-Aug-2003 10:15pm Not anymore |
| romkey | posted 5-Aug-2003 10:27pm no, I don't. Because I'm overweight, I'm at a higher risk to develop type 2 than someone who's not overweight, but I've had glucose tests and I don't currently have diabetes. |
| romkey | (reply to mandy) posted 5-Aug-2003 10:29pm that's wonderful! |
| Enheduanna | posted 5-Aug-2003 10:51pm No; one of my paternal uncles does. |
| ihatespiders | posted 5-Aug-2003 10:53pm My brother died from complications of type 1 diabetes. |
| Glassa | posted 5-Aug-2003 11:31pm No, I don't. I do have something else right now, but none of the guys want to hear about that. |
| anoddoblivion | posted 6-Aug-2003 12:43am Nope. Question: Can you have diabetes and not know it? Just curious. |

| Maarten | posted 6-Aug-2003 3:57am No |
| Dino | posted 6-Aug-2003 7:10am NO, and no-one in my family does either. |
| kirst | posted 6-Aug-2003 7:35am Fortunately not. |
| dora | posted 6-Aug-2003 10:10am No.My grandmother does. |
| Jemmy | posted 6-Aug-2003 10:34am No. I don't think anyone in my immediate family does. |
| Galomorro | posted 6-Aug-2003 10:54am Not that I know of. I have not been tested for it. I'm interested in ways that people can prevent such a disease since I have read something about it and a former supervisor had it, so I am somewhat familiar with it. |
| dab | (reply to mandy) posted 6-Aug-2003 11:53am What!? I didn't know it was fixable. That's so cool! |
| pandora | posted 6-Aug-2003 2:56pm Not that I know of. |
| Biggles | posted 6-Aug-2003 4:22pm No, but my brother has type I and I have an increased risk of developing type II (maybe). |
| Biggles | (reply to ihatespiders) posted 6-Aug-2003 4:25pm |
| juliw | posted 6-Aug-2003 5:51pm Not that I know of. My mom has it, and is practically blind be cause of it. My sister has it. It says on my dad's death certificate that he had it, though I didn't know at the time he had it. My maternal grandfather had it, and went completely blind from it. |
| Glassa | (reply to anoddoblivion) posted 6-Aug-2003 10:22pm Yes, you can have diabetes and not know it. Some of the symptoms are increased thirst, increased urination, unexplained weight gain, etc. Go to www.webmd.com to read more about it. |
| ihatespiders | (reply to Biggles) posted 7-Aug-2003 1:17am I feel the same way. |
| mandy | (reply to dab) posted 7-Aug-2003 1:34am I lost a ton of weight and I am eating correctly and exercising regularly |
| justjulie | posted 7-Aug-2003 7:15am no..but my mother has just been diagnosed w/ type 2 |
| justjulie | (reply to mandy) posted 7-Aug-2003 7:17am good for you my dear!! |
| dab | (reply to mandy) posted 7-Aug-2003 10:56am I couldn't be happier for you. Okay, maybe if I heard you had scores of boyz and gurls bowing to your every desire. No, not even then. I'm happier for you for this. You're awesome to have control that way. |
| anoddoblivion | (reply to Glassa) posted 7-Aug-2003 1:01pm Thanks. |
| jettles | posted 7-Aug-2003 1:03pm no |
| Biggles | (reply to ihatespiders) posted 7-Aug-2003 3:49pm How so? It's fairly uncommon for diabetes to kill young people who are already diagnosed with the disease isn't it? My brother only developed it less than a year ago, so that's what I want to believe Would you mind if I ask what kind of complications you lost your brother to? I understand completely if it's something you don't want to talk about. |
| mandy | (reply to dab) posted 7-Aug-2003 10:17pm It's taken ten long years of struggle to get here. It feels brilliant. Thank you *smooch* |
| mandy | (reply to justjulie) posted 7-Aug-2003 10:18pm |
| ihatespiders | (reply to Biggles) posted 7-Aug-2003 11:01pm Sorry I dont want to discorage you. The diabeties attacks the weakest organ in the body first. Type 1 dibetics are healthy at first they get sicker as the years go by.After a time they become brittle, where the blood sugar becomes hard to regulate, sometimes they have to take 3 shots a day and have to mix 12hr and 6hr insolin to regulate blood sugar . he will have to test his blood sugar more than once a day. My brother devloped diabetic gastronomy. ( thats where they have boughts where the stomich wont digest food it just sits in the stomich and ferments and they get sick) he was on all kinds of stomich medicnes, and got neasua shots in the hospital that knocked him out and sometimes made him see stuff that wasnt there. later when he was in the hospital he got bacteria infection that got in his blood streem the only way to get rid of it was take this antibotic that would make his kidneys fail. he went on dyalisis , a dibetic life span on dyalisis is 3 years, so he was on the transplant list. All of us try to donate a kidney and we were all rejected. I had high blood pressure and if they took one of mine the kidny would quit working. My sister tested positive for hepititus B. She got it from her cheating husband and she is a carrier, if she gets run down it could attack her. my other sister was rejected becauss she tested positive for cancer in a pap test but she dont have cancer, but she has to get regular checkups my last sister was rejected because she had a child under 2 yrs old.So he went on the waiting list. Hed been on the waiting listfor 1 1/2 years and finley made it to the top of the list. Then he started haveing mini strokes one after another they kept getting bigger till he died from a stroke. he had acid reflux and had to sleep with the head of his bed up on sement blocks. He had bleeding ulsers, and was neaua most of the time. he had glacoma and had to have lazer surgery on his eyes to stop the veins in his eyes from bleeding he eventualy lost most of his eye sight. He also had a little nerve damage. he had a really hard time eating for a while he was fed through a tube that went to his intestines and bypased his stomich for a while so it could heal and be ok for a while. I hope none of this happens to your brother. |
| Biggles | (reply to ihatespiders) posted 8-Aug-2003 2:25pm That's a really tragic thing to happen to a young person My brother already uses short-acting and long-acting insulin and injects at *least* three times a day (once before each meal) and more if he needs it. He also has to test his blood sugar several times a day. He's fairly healthy though (but he doesn't eat right, so he may not stay that way |
| kirsty | posted 8-Aug-2003 4:38pm Yes, Type 2. |
| kirsty | (reply to mandy) posted 8-Aug-2003 4:39pm Mandy - you can't get rid of diabetes. You do have it, you are just controlling it via exercise and eating right. If you stopped doing this, it would come back straight away. |
| ihatespiders | (reply to Biggles) posted 8-Aug-2003 6:27pm diet only makes the diabetic feel better but it doesnt keep them from getting sick, so if he cheats once in a while its ok, but dont get me wrong diet is very important. My brother was 15 when he got diabeties and died at age 35. Is your brother on a slideing scale insolin, It works well for blood sugar control. |
| Biggles | (reply to ihatespiders) posted 9-Aug-2003 9:51am Having cheesecake and chocolate muffins for breakfast one day, and about 15 little gingerbreadmen the next isn't what I call cheating once in a while. If my mum doesn't make him a meal then he just snacks on food that's bad for him |
| ihatespiders | (reply to Biggles) posted 10-Aug-2003 12:45am Uhoh |
| Biggles | (reply to ihatespiders) posted 10-Aug-2003 3:30pm He knows he's not supposed to eat like that. He's very intelligent - did science right though school and is studying Psychology at university. He's read enough about diabetes that he probably knows more about it now than most GPs (general practioner doctors). Not having stuff in the house doesn't do much good. When he's at university he eats what he wants even though he's been taught a healthy relationship with food by my mother. He works when he's at home so he's able to pick up junk food whenever he wants. That's where the muffins came from. the cheesecake and gingerbread was a one-off for my little brother's birthday. But, right now as I write, he's making *flapjacks* of all things in the kitchen. One part sugar, one part golden syrup, one part oats I don't know what it'll take to give him a wake up call. My mum's going to bother him about it more after he's got his upcoming exams over with. |
| ihatespiders | (reply to Biggles) posted 11-Aug-2003 1:59am Im really sorry to hear that. Ask him to stay on his diet for you and the rest of your family if not for himself, because it causes you a lot of grief and worry. When my brother was on dyalisis it would drain the energy out of him. One time we went to Wal-Mart and I got a wheel chair for him at first he refused to be pushed in a wheel chair, I asked him to do it for me because he got so tired from walking around the store it really scared me, so he gave in and let me push him in the chair. Mabe if you told him that the way hes eating is really scareing you he might change. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 11-Aug-2003 10:12am No, but my Mom does, I'm not sure the type but she does take insuline. |
| Biggles | (reply to ihatespiders) posted 11-Aug-2003 11:11am Unfortunately, he wouldn't |
| ihatespiders | (reply to Biggles) posted 11-Aug-2003 8:18pm Darn it! |
| hairyhyde | posted 21-Aug-2003 5:13pm I have had type 1 diabetes for over 20 years and I wear an insulin pump which has improved the quality of my life. I try to eat right and I like to swim walk alot. I also am a musician & teacher. Please be kind and don't be judgemental. |

| Biggles | (reply to hairyhyde) posted 8-Oct-2003 9:09am Why would anyone be unkind or judgemental? |
