| bill | posted 19-Jun-2003 1:47pm since Richard Harris died, why not kill Dumbledore |
| Glassa | posted 19-Jun-2003 1:47pm I'd say probably Dumbledore since the actor who played him died. My next guess would be Dobby, then Hermoine. |
| Enheduanna | posted 19-Jun-2003 2:35pm I'm voting for Dobby because I hope it's him, but I don't think it will be. I have no idea who it will be. |
| Iseult | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 19-Jun-2003 5:28pm Yeah, I hope it's Dobby, too. But I have this huge theory it's Ron. |
| Pomeranian | posted 19-Jun-2003 6:28pm I know who it is but definitely not by choice. A web site I frequent posted it without spoiler warnings. |
| Biggles | posted 19-Jun-2003 7:12pm I think it willl be Snape, he needs to be redeemed and I think he willl do that by dying. Dumbledore also has to die before too long, because Harry has to face Voldemort alone. I think either Hermione or Ron will end up under Voldemort's control, although it could be Neville. I see the young characters in the book playing the parts of the older ones. Neville is 'Scabbers'/Peter, Harry is his father, Ron is Sirius, etc. So it's pretty likely that one of his friends will betray him (albeit unwillingly, or out of fear). I also think that Draco will be redeemed and save/help/die for Harry because he is basically Snape. He may be seduced by Voldemort to begin with, but he'll come back just like Snape did. Snape is my favourite character - the only one in the books that I really think has any depth so far. If the other characters start turning then I suppose they may become less 2D, but at the moment I think it would be a shame to lose Snape since he's the only character who has been fleshed out at all. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Iseult) posted 19-Jun-2003 7:38pm Except I think Ron and Hermione are supposed to end up together. But someone important like that seems likely. Dumbledore seems a bit too obvious--I don't think she'd kill him just because the actor died, especially since he's in the next two books, which haven't been made into movies yet anyway. But it would take away Harry's safety net, which would be cool. |
| Iseult | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 19-Jun-2003 10:02pm Remember the Christmas dinner in the book three. Well Trelawney said that first person who gets up from the table of 13 will die. Harry and Ron stood up at the same time or somehting like that. That's why I think it's Ron. Now, she can't kill Harry now, there is two more books to go... hopefully... |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Iseult) posted 19-Jun-2003 11:55pm I don't remember that bit. And she certainly can't kill Harry. So maybe you're right about Ron! |
| Lex | posted 20-Jun-2003 4:20am I'll guess hagrid |
| Lex | (reply to Biggles) posted 20-Jun-2003 4:23am You've thought way too much about your answer. |
| Iseult | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 20-Jun-2003 6:55am I hope not. He brings humour into everything, and I want to see him with Hermione. |
| Dino | posted 20-Jun-2003 7:22am I'm guessing Hagrid - but I am not going to look again at this survey after tommorrow. And will stay away from it until after I've received my copy from Amazon (probably Monday now as I use my work address). Don't send me replies on this subject. And if anyone posts to Forum please mark the thread (spoilers) and use a neutral title. |
| Iseult | (reply to Dino) posted 20-Jun-2003 10:55am You're going to wait till Monday to get it? I don't think I could survive till then. I'm getting it today. Gonna go to Chapters at 11, and buy it at 12. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Iseult) posted 20-Jun-2003 11:14am I like book-Ron better than movie-Ron. Movie-Ron overdoes his silly facial expressions. I think Fred and George Weasley are my favorite characters in the books. They crack me up. |
| Jemmy | posted 20-Jun-2003 11:19am I don't want anyone to die! I love them all. Even the ones I hate, I love. |
| Iseult | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 20-Jun-2003 3:06pm Fred and George are definitely most hilarious characters in the book. Pity they did so little in the movies. |
| Dino | (reply to Iseult) posted 20-Jun-2003 3:13pm I have now choice now. I've already ordered it from Amazon. And I won't get it until Monday. Shame, as I have a quiet weekend. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Iseult) posted 20-Jun-2003 3:25pm I know! I was so sad how much they pared down their roles in the movie. One of my favorite bits is in the second one when they're teasing Harry about being the heir of Slytherin--they shout to everyone that he's a "seriously evil wizard." It cracks me up! They're such troublemakers! |
| Richard47 | posted 20-Jun-2003 6:41pm Hopefully, JK Rowling |
| Iseult | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 20-Jun-2003 7:35pm Yeah, and it sucks that they cut out that scene. |
| Iseult | (reply to Dino) posted 20-Jun-2003 7:35pm Well, at least you saved money on the book for pre-ordering it. I saved $15. How much is does the book cost in UK? |
| CarolL | posted 20-Jun-2003 10:29pm Tigger. |
| jettles | posted 21-Jun-2003 8:52am maybe snape? or dobby? |
| Dino | (reply to Iseult) posted 21-Jun-2003 10:33am I can't remember now but yeah it was cheaper than buying it now full price. £8.49 (well £11.24 with VAT and P+P) (£11.24 which is 18.8181 USD United States Dollars - or 25.5776 CAD Canada Dollars ) Its cheap but I assume things are more expensive over here. |
| Enheduanna | (reply to Iseult) posted 21-Jun-2003 12:23pm They had it in the movie, but it was basically a throw-away--if you blinked, you'd miss it. It was sort of random and barely in context. |
| mandy | posted 21-Jun-2003 12:35pm Abstains and refuses to read comments in this survey |
| Iseult | (reply to Dino) posted 21-Jun-2003 10:17pm Oh God, I feel so bad for you - I am reading the book right now. Actually, I was reading it whole day today and I got up to page 320. ONLY thing I will reveal you, because I'm burning to reveal something to someone, and it's totally non-plot related, is that Ron uses 'mate' a lot when talking to Harry, which he, as far as my memory goes, never have used before. |
| juliw | posted 22-Jun-2003 7:16pm My 12 year old cousin just finished the book, and she told me who dies. I am not telling, though, because I don't want to spoil it. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 24-Jun-2003 6:02am I don't know, I haven't been reading the books. |
| pandora | posted 24-Jun-2003 7:44am I'm on page 450....that's all I'll say. |
| Iseult | posted 24-Jun-2003 7:47am Hurry up!!! It is so good. I finished it yesterday. What do you think so far? |
| pandora | (reply to Iseult) posted 24-Jun-2003 8:02am I like it! I don't know how much to say....but I've been infuriated and reallllly frustrated a couple of times already. I hope that dog gets what's coming to her, if you know what I mean! |
| Iseult | posted 24-Jun-2003 9:56am Yeah, I know. I hate her. I so wanted her to get killed, but slow, painful way. Btw, who is your favourite character? Did this book change anything? I love Lucius Malfoy even more, now that I know more about him. |
| pandora | (reply to Iseult) posted 24-Jun-2003 10:42am My favorite character...hmm. I'm not sure I really have one, but I know for sure it's not either of the Malfoy's! |
| Iseult | posted 24-Jun-2003 11:42am I've decided now, I love Lucius. And for some weird reason, kind of like satori, just from a flash of light, I started liking Bellatrix. Can't explain it. Hate myself for liking her, but she's just amazing. |
| pandora | (reply to Iseult) posted 25-Jun-2003 7:01pm I haven't gotten much further in the book since my last post, but I'm a bit intrigued by Bellatrix as well. So far I'm a fan of Tonks too. |
| Iseult | posted 25-Jun-2003 10:12pm I don't know, I like her, but she seems too cliched. Like, she was made to appeal to younger females. She's so lucky, with her abilities she can never have a bad hair day. I like Kingsley. He's so cool and calm. |
| autumnlight | posted 27-Jun-2003 12:41pm I don't read Harry Potter and don't want to but I've heard it's Sirius,whoever he is. |

| pandora | posted 27-Jun-2003 8:47pm Oh lovely. Well I guess I can quit wasting time finishing up the last three hundred or so pages. |
| smurf | posted 6-Jul-2003 7:07am I have no idea, but I wish it was Harry. No more Harry Potter mania ... hurray!! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 6-Jul-2003 11:03am It was a badly written death anyway - nothing spoiled |
| wolfchik9 | posted 12-Jul-2003 9:25pm I read it already, sorry to spoil the survey. |
| DavidDavid | posted 11-Aug-2003 6:47am She can't be buggered to write any more books so she'll kill off Harry in one of them for sure. Please. He deserves it. The little Gimp |
| citrustwist27 | posted 4-Sep-2003 2:06am I'm going to guess Lucius Malfoy |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 5-Sep-2003 6:18pm I've never read Harry Potter - which is surprising considering fantasy and sci fi is my favourite genre. It just never appealed. I think it was his round glasses that put me off! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 6-Sep-2003 11:19am Hello you! It's been ages since I last saw you here Have you read Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy? |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 8-Sep-2003 1:19pm Hey - I'm good. I move out and into a flat in 5 days for uni, so I'm a bit scared, but I'm good. How are you? I haven't read them - I considered getting them out of the library but never did. Why, do you recommend them? |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 9-Sep-2003 8:19pm They're actually decent - definitely kids' books, but pretty good Good luck with the move - I'm sure it'll go fine! Are you going to uni in Manchester? What are you studying? You probably told me before, but I forgot |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 11-Sep-2003 9:33am yeah, I'm sticking in Manchester. I'm doing History and Philosophy. Which should be fun. I got to pick a couple of units myself so I've thrown a couple of english ones in there too. How is yours going? |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 13-Sep-2003 1:20pm Mine's gong pretty well. I'm back to it in about 3 weeks - not looking entirely forward to that Are you living in private flat, or one of the uni ones? My brother lived in a private flat last year - Toledo or something, the company was called but he's back in halls this year. I have a couple of friends starting at Manchester this September as well - one of them may be doing English, it's so hard to keep track! |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 2-Oct-2003 8:18pm I'm in private halls of residence - but they're arranged in flats. There are 7 of us - everyone is really nice so that's good. I didnt want to get the uni ones - the idea of sharing a bathroom with about 20 gazillion people didnt appeal to me! I'm glad things are going well for you! I'm sure you'll get right into the lectures once they start again. I'm glad to be finally in an atmosphere where wanting to learn isnt frowned upon! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 4-Oct-2003 7:57pm I'm back tomorrow. Half happy to be going back, half wishing I could stay at home (with no work!) |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 4-Oct-2003 9:48pm It's weird that, I felt really homesick this week so I came home for tonight - and now I want to go back again! I'm actually looking forward to getting into the meat of the work! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 6-Oct-2003 5:51pm I didn't feel homesick much at all when I first went away. It was the second term, after Christmas that was difficult to start with - probably just because I'd had a great Christmas with all my family there. |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 30-Oct-2003 6:49pm It's not so bad for me as home is only a 50 minute bus journey away - I can pop home whenever I like. I'm finding that I really enjoy it here now though - I'm so glad I went to uni. |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 31-Oct-2003 11:17am Great stuff |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 1-Nov-2003 7:38pm I'm absolutely flat out! Between essays, lectures and my job I have no time at all! and money is extremely tight at the moment. Despite all this, I love it. It's very weird. How are things going with yours? You stay up all night doing your essays? |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 2-Nov-2003 8:31am Not so much. I've been a lot more organised so far this year than last - been stopping in the department all day rather than coming back to my room, becaue I can get more work done up there than I can down here with all the distractions! It helps of course, that I don't have a job - we're actually forbidden from working during term-time so I don't even need to feel guilty about it. I've been doing more stuff with societies though this term, so time is starting to pinch a little more! I spent all of Saturday in London helping a team of volunteers build a set of 5 houses. Now I have today and tomorrow to finish one essay and write another in its entirety. Not to mention that I have practical write-ups to get done, *and* I already have my next 4 essay titles, to be completed over the next 4 weeks (one due in each week). I'm feeling a little under pressure this year because I have my first finals next June in two modules. Trying to really stay on top of things, and I'm mostly managing, just not doing nearly enough extra reading. Every lecture has a reading list we're expected to read the majority of, and I have 10 lectures a week! I barely manage to do sufficient reading for my essays so I just haven't got any extra done at all! But I've just found out, I can stop here for a week at the end of term, so I can have a "reading week" to try and catch up! No complaints though - you're right, however tough it is sometimes, it just feels worth it being at uni What are the people like there? |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 3-Nov-2003 8:10am You're forbidden from working? Why? What about those that cant afford not to? I would have to leave uni if I didnt work! It's great that you've been involved with some societies - I've been looking into some but there is n archeaological society, so I may have to content myself with the drama club I know what you mean about the reading, and all the books are so expensive - and you have to buy them as there is no chance of finding a copy in the libraray now. The people are all great. There are absolutely NO scallies at university - which is one of the best bits. Everyone that I have met is really friendly, and my housemates are all excellent people. There are 6 of us at the moment (one room is empty) and there is only me and one other girl and the rest are all guys. But they are all great to live with and we all get on. What about you? |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 3-Nov-2003 1:33pm We have very short terms (8 weeks) so they're very intensive. I honestly don't think that anyone could hold down a part-time job of more than a couple of hours a week without getting behind on their academic work. The university don't want us getting behind academically, so there's a work-ban in place! We do have long holidays where we're free to work, and most colleges have hardship funds available for poorer students so we do make it up. And don't forget that over 50% of the people at Oxford went to fee-paying schools which means they have more money than sense. Most of the remainder are fairly wealthy too. There aren't a huge number of students who pay reduced or no tuition fees. I can only survive without working because my parents pay my (reduced) fees and I'm very frugal - not drinking, smoking, using a mobile phone or clubbing stands my in good stead financially, especially when you factor in that I cook for myself so I save a lot of money doing that. We have an archaeological society here - they take people off on digs which seems pretty exciting! I guess you'll have to do a dig or two anyway as part of your course? Is there a time period you're specialising in? My friends here who are archaeologists are really classicists so they get to go on Roman and Greek digs Are your libraries not great? It's always irritating when all the copies are out Ah, scallies, such a Mancunian word I've met some amazing people here, from the completely weird to the freakishly intelligent. The president of the society I've been house building with is a DPhil (PhD) student over here on a Rhodes scholarship and all the Rhodes scholars are incredibly organised, intelligent, motivated and busy. They're involved with everything - most seem to have set up their own charities or brokered Middle Eastern peace treaties....you know the type! |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 6-Nov-2003 7:32am I'm finding that I'm pretty much the poorest student I've found so far. I didnt have to pay tuition fees so thats not too bad, but I've not had any help from my parents at all. In fact my mother owes me £300! I dont mind about that - I like doing things on my own - I'm just not sure if I'm going to be able to afford my rent next term thats all! I dont get into the archaeology part of my course until next year as I did something really stupid. I got accepted for Ancient History and Archaeology at Manchester Uni which required that I get 2 Bs and a C. But I thought there was no way I was going to get the grades and didnt want to set myself up for disappointment, so I declined the offer. And then got the grades. So I'm at Manchester Met instead doing History and Philosophy. So that means no digs Our libraries are amazing! I could spend all day in them. The Manchester City Library is much better than the university library, as nothing is ever in when you want it. But you couldnt expect much else from a city with the largest student population in the country! I tend to just buy the books I need now and get it over with. Bloody books arent cheap! I'm currently in the Student Village, which is a private halls of residence. I'm not sure where Chandos is but Grosvenor is nice. How is your brother doing? Is he enjoying himself? |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 6-Nov-2003 3:52pm Rent is a big problem Shame about the course I might have to nip over and check out your libraries over Christmas! I'm staying for an extra week at the end of term to do some of the reading I need to catch up on but I can't do it all in that time. I'll try Sheffield university library but if they don't have what I need, Manchester's probably my next best bet. I'm very motivated this year, I really want to do well. I feel like a first could almost be in my reach if I really work for it starting now, but at the moment I'm looking like getting a reasonable 2:1. If I can stay motivated then maybe just maybe.... My brother's pretty happy. He's a third year psychologist but he had a big bust up with his friends last year (they were stealing stuff - including prams while mothers and babies were inside shops - and just leaving it in the flat, getting really drunk every night and trashing the place) so he's back in halls this year with the first years! He's been making friends despite insisting that he wasn't even going to try again. Even girls! |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 8-Nov-2003 7:08pm All my loan so far has gone immediately on rent and the next installment is going to be the same. My problem is that i have no overdraft left since that is what I have been living off. If I can only survive this term, then it wont be so bad, considering I have bought things like my laptop, my tv etc out of my overdraft and now I am working I can hopefully build my overdraft back up again. But it is seriously getting to the stage where I might have to quit uni before christmas, which is obviously quite upsetting! I'll be annoyed if I'm in all this debt for nothing! I've also got to watch my priorities. At the moment my money crisis is top of the list, which means I'm working as many hours as I can, but that means I'm sat up until 4 in the morning doing essays, which cant be good. I shouldn't lose sight of what I'm spending all my hours at work trying to pay for! It's all too complicated - brain overload! I've managed to get quite a varied selection of courses like American History, Persecuting Societies and Victorian Literature - all of which I'm enjoying. I can always specialise in archaeology later, so I'm not panicking too much about that. I would go to Manchester library - you get lost very easily and it's exceedinlgy confusing (which I was surprised about as I spend half my life in a library!), but it is great when you get the hang of it! I must admit, I would like to check out the resources you have down in Oxford! The problem with my uni is that it has about 6 campuses, so ordering books from campus to campus is a nightmare. It would be nice to have one giant uni library! I know what you mean about being motivated - I was always quite motivated at school as well but this is different! I'm sure you know what I mean! I'm sure you will get your 2:1 - you sound motivated enough to me! I cant believe your brother's friends! That is really shocking - I'm glad he has made other friends! I'm glad there arent too many younguns in halls! I was worried that i was going to be older than everyone else, but quite a lot of people have missed a year or two, so I'm sure your brother has found loads of people from his year! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 8-Nov-2003 7:58pm Wow, your rent must be hideous At least you've managed to get an overdraft though, otherwise you'd be in big trouble. I do hope you manage to last out this next term, as I imagine it will get easier after that. As soon as you can work off your overdraft you won't have any more huge expenditures from it of the order of laptops/tv etc. I hate budgeting so much. "His Dark Materials" has been turned into a play in two parts and it's on in London until March. I really want to go next term as London is so close to Oxford, but it's going to cost so much. Because it's in two parts, we'll have to go down on two separate nights and buy two separate tickets. With travel included it'll come to £44 all told. Plus, we'll get back to Oxford at about 2am and possibly have 9am lectures the next day. It's already selling out, so we have to make a decision tomorrow!!! Sheesh. I *really* want to go, but if I do then that £44 is more than my usual entertainment bill for an entire term, splashed out on just 2 nights. |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 9-Nov-2003 8:45pm I think you should go! Everyone should be allowed to treat themselves at some point - mine was my laptop! - and I'm sure you've earned it. Plus £44 isn't a humongous extravagance! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 10-Nov-2003 5:14am I have decided that I am going! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 10-Nov-2003 5:14am (As long as I can still get tickets!) |
