During the school week, what kind of breakfasts did you eat when you were a kid (say, under 12 years old)?

My s/o says that I spend too much time making bacon and eggs or pancakes etc. for my kids on school days. I don't mind and I think that a kid learns better on a full stomach, but I digress, this is not the question. What did you eat before school when you were a child, to the best of your recollection?

That's an awfully long time ago. My best recollection is that when I was really young, and more so in the wintertime, we might have porridge or scrambled eggs and toast. As I got older, and when the weather was warmer, there was more cold cereal and toast. We only had a "big breakfast", with meat, potatoes, pancakes or what-have-you, on weekends.

In response to your reasoning in the explanation; it seems to me that a child can have a full stomach without eating bacon and pancakes. Porridge and fresh fruit would be healthier.

Usually toast I guess. I could count on one hand the number of times my mother fixed breakfast for me, once I was past the age of 7 or so. Wow, that sounds negative, but I don't mean it to, really.

I remember that USDA surplus oatmeal was common for a while around age 10. Surprisingly, I like oatmeal today.

Same as I eat now. Cereal. Mainly cornflakes. Although now I mix it with half of Bran Flakes too.

I've never enjoyed breakfast. When I was very young, my mother would make me have porridge or cereal. By the time I was about 9, I would only have a slice of toast and couldn't always manage that. When I went to secondary school at 11, I had to get up early in the morning and could face even less. My mum worried that I wouldn't cope if I didn't have breakfast, so she would make me smoothies from yoghurt and fruit (tinned mango or peaches usually). After a while, I couldn't face drinking those either. By the time I was about 14, I was leaving the house on a couple of sips of water. I couldn't manage anything else at that time. Now I never eat breakfast - I take a bottle of water to lectures wth me, and occasionally buy some chocolate to eat in the break if I'm feeling peckish. The only time now that I would have breakfast, is if I have a morning exam.

Because both of my parents worked full time, I went to my grandma's house before school. I did not like to eat breakfast, mainly because I did not like the taste of most traditional breakfast foods. My grandma insisted we have breakfast of some kind, so I usually picked oatmeal, because I could not stand the taste of eggs. If she would have allowed me, I would have preferred a can of soup or canned spaghetti, or some food with a lot of sugar in it, like doughnuts. But, it was usually oatmeal. After a while, she did concede and let me have pop with my oatmeal.

I don't remember really. Food was always such an issue growing up and there were many restrictions and rules and I always felt controlled and unsatisfied. I don't remember breakfasts at all.

Mallory(12) gets her own breakfasts on school days because she is up and out of the house first in the mornings. We always make sure we have a combination of premade foods, frozen breakfast items that can be easily heated, cereals, breads and spreads, or muffins or breakfast bars, milk and juices, things that are quick and tasty and satisfying that she can prepare herself. She'll often sit and enjoy breakfast at the table with a book open, reading. She likes this time to gear up for the day. Breakfast is important and they have a free breakfast program at her school which she could also take advantage of but she has chosen to work in the school library before school so needs to get breakfast done at home first.

I think your cooking for your children is brilliant and special * smile * They benefit from this not only because it shows you care but because breakfast is important fuel. Once they are older they may want to start taking care of breakfasts for themselves and as long as you encourage that and make sure they have everything they need to make something well rounded for themselves without burning down the house...that's cool * smile *

I think my mom would always make a hot breakfast most of the time, until we got a little older and she had to go to work. I think if you have the time for it go for it.It's good for the kids.

When I lived with both my parents (8 and under) my dad would insist on a proper breakfast (full english usually). From 8 - 12 I stopped eating breakfast. I still don't.
