| Biggles | posted 10-May-2003 8:23pm No. But I really were Canadian and had been brought up in Canada, then I might. But if me, who I am, was Canadian then I wouldn't. That doesn't make much sense, but there you go.... |
| Enheduanna | posted 10-May-2003 8:30pm No, if by American you mean a citizen of the USA, which is the common assumption. Yes, if you mean a resident of the American continent(s). |
| Iseult | posted 10-May-2003 8:32pm Hell no! |
| Iseult | (reply to Zang) posted 10-May-2003 8:33pm How aboot that, eh? |
| OfTheSoul | posted 10-May-2003 9:18pm I ask because I once went across the border and made the mistake of raising this interesting issue with the customs officer at entry on the Canada side. She had just asked the person before me if he was "an American" and he responded, "No, I'm Canadian." That struck me, and it now has me believing that part of the arrogance of Americans is somewhat granted them. By presuming that the expression "American" exclusively identifies the United States citizen almost promotes egotism to an already indulgent society - the people of the U.S. I am an American, by the way. From the United States. |
| juliw | posted 10-May-2003 9:34pm I would consider myself a Canadian! |
| romkey | posted 11-May-2003 12:45am I would consider myself a North American... |
| skylark | posted 11-May-2003 2:44am So again... yes, in the geographical sense. But I believe (I don't know!) that also the Canadians say "Americans" when they mean "those who live in USA"... Isn't Carol a Canuck? |
| autumnlight | posted 11-May-2003 9:57am No, I would consider myself Canadian. That's like saying 'If you're Welsh or Scottish, do you consider yourself English?' |
| sonikJ | posted 11-May-2003 10:41am No, but I would consider myself a North American. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 11-May-2003 11:18am I would call myself a Canadian, North American. |
| DeeDee17 | posted 11-May-2003 11:25am I am Canadian, and no, I don't consider myself American. |
| Ellipsis | posted 11-May-2003 4:19pm No...cause i'd live in Canada silly. |
| Dino | posted 11-May-2003 4:42pm No, I would be aggressively Canadian as I myself have been aggressively Welsh when people have said, "I love you English People". |
| Cleo | posted 11-May-2003 9:44pm No I would BE Canadian.....Why did I even bother to answer this? *8scratches her head** |
| Cleo | (reply to autumnlight) posted 11-May-2003 9:47pm Good point. |
| Cleo | (reply to skylark) posted 11-May-2003 9:48pm What's a Canuck?? |
| Cleo | (reply to Dino) posted 11-May-2003 9:54pm Babe,I didn't know you were Welsh. How cool! I'm so dingy. I assumed you were British because of the country you live in. As Biggles told me in another survey; about the Cornish people being a country all their own a hundred years ago.Something like that. There must be a lot of dialects spoken there. |
| DeeDee17 | (reply to Cleo) posted 11-May-2003 9:58pm Canuck = Canadian |
| Cleo | (reply to DeeDee17) posted 12-May-2003 4:29am Ohhhhhhhhhh! Okay...now I see. Slang for Canadian. Thanks DeeDee17. |
| Hyena | posted 12-May-2003 5:30am I am Canadian - we are so similar to Americans that there are times that I might say that I am because it makes no difference (travelling) - but there are a lot of significant cultural differences, for sure. I am Canadian. |
| autumnlight | (reply to Cleo) posted 12-May-2003 10:29am hey! how are you doing? I saw you on messenger the other day, but it was about 1am so I thought I wouldn't bother you... but then I realised you are on a totally different time zone anyway. I'm such a ditz sometimes |
| kaleb777 | posted 12-May-2003 12:08pm I don't think so. It's weird, but Americans call themselves American, and often call the US 'America', but if anyone asks them if they live in America they get pissed off and suddenly demand it be called the United States. I think it comes from the USA not being a real country name. It's like if France was called the United Provences of Europe, it would be wrong to call France Europe. I think Canadians identify themselves firstly as Canadians, then as North Americans. |
| Dino | (reply to Cleo) posted 12-May-2003 3:39pm Wales does have its own language - we are British but just not English. Famous Welsh people are Richard Burton, Tom Jones, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones. |
| DeeDee17 | (reply to Cleo) posted 12-May-2003 5:05pm No problem |
| Zang | (reply to Iseult) posted 12-May-2003 8:26pm I might live in the western hemisphere, but that hardly makes me an American! |
| Kris13 | posted 12-May-2003 9:22pm This is the most fudgeed up question. Besides, we all know America is a continent. |
| OfTheSoul | (reply to Kris13) posted 12-May-2003 11:04pm May I ask why this is such an adverse question? |
| Maarten | posted 13-May-2003 5:35pm Isn't being called an American about the biggest insult for a Canadian? |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 13-May-2003 9:15pm I would consider myself to be a North American. Unless I'm mistaken, isn't Canada generally considered to be part of North America? |
| Cleo | (reply to autumnlight) posted 14-May-2003 8:19pm Haaaaa! I'm like that all the time, cept I call it, "dingy" or refer to myself as a 'dingbat" "space cadet".... I'm fine tho. & like wise,I too see you on messenger all the time as well.. Stop in to say a quick "Hello" sometimes... If your like me,I know your probably busy & don't have much time to chat in length,OR probably don't have much to chat "about". & that's cool too. That's what I do with Moonstone,Dora,& Carol sometimes. But,I usually "always" try to make time,to stop a little longer & chat with Dino,Biggles,Maarten & Julie. I usually chat with them in length. As for me I've been kicking back doing nothing. I really need to get a life already. Seriously! I've been unemployed for so long,I've become lazy... I keep telling myself that I'm gong to look for a job but,I haven't yet. When my $$$ runs out then I suppose I'll have too. |
| Cleo | (reply to Dino) posted 14-May-2003 8:25pm Oh MY God!!! I love all the people you mentioned above... |
| skylark | (reply to Cleo) posted 15-May-2003 4:11am Isn't it same as Canadian? By the way, I've tried to send you e-mail to your Hotmail account but it just keeps bouncing back. Have you received anything? |
| dora | (reply to skylark) posted 15-May-2003 12:49pm Isn't something like a French Canadian? I'm not sure! Help anyone! |
| Dino | (reply to Cleo) posted 16-May-2003 2:29pm I've had a week off work so am just enjoying doing nothing and enjoying a life of leisure. |
| Jemmy | posted 16-May-2003 4:21pm No. I'm canadian, and I consider myself to be canadian. |
| Cleo | (reply to skylark) posted 18-May-2003 5:00pm Skylark this is my email addy: dabprovin@msn.com I was using my daughters email addy for a while, because my ISP (MSN) was giving me a rough time(a month ago but,it since been repaired)I also have a yahoo addy which I hardly never use. The dabprovin@msn.com is current so use that one. I'm so sorry that they kept bouncing back. |
| Cleo | (reply to skylark) posted 18-May-2003 5:02pm Dino....babe!! I'm so happy & thrilled to hear that your now enjoying a life of leisure. You so deserved it. Good for you!! Have fun & make the most of it! Do you go back to work tomorrow? (Monday) |
| skylark | (reply to Cleo) posted 20-May-2003 7:09am Now I tried it for the third time. Hope it will reach you now. |

| StarsofJupiter | posted 28-May-2003 9:33pm i am a canadian and i wouldn't consider myself an american in a million years....no offense |
| jasonmreece | posted 3-Jun-2003 2:00pm I think I would distinguish myself from Americans because Canada has a reputation for being more laid back and tolerant than uptight Americans. |
| OfTheSoul | (reply to autumnlight) posted 14-Jun-2003 1:46pm The point is that Canada is located in America but only those from the U.S. seem to refer to themselves as Americans, you see. |
| autumnlight | (reply to Cleo) posted 26-Jun-2003 2:30pm Hi! My exams are now FINISHED! WOOHOO! I know I messed a few of them up but some I did well in I think. And now I'm off to Devon in a few days to stay with my dad until September - which means less internet access - but I'm sure I'll catch you on messenger sometimes! Got a job yet you lazy bum? |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 26-Jun-2003 5:31pm Yay for you on the exams front! Whereabouts in Devon is your dad living at the moment? I'm spending some time this summer on the Devon/Cornwall border - round Plymouth |
| Cleo | (reply to autumnlight) posted 27-Jun-2003 10:47am Yep, I work at a local Mall in a retail store. I don't like my job but, it'll do for now. I'm looking for anew one as we speak. |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 27-Jun-2003 12:22pm I'm so glad to have them over - how were your exams? - you'll be getting your results soon? Dad lives in Ilfracombe - which is North Devon - bit away from Plymouth, but yay, we'll be in the same county! |
| autumnlight | (reply to Cleo) posted 27-Jun-2003 12:23pm I hope you find one that you like soon!. I've just quit my job at the off-license to start another one on a beach - which is a lot less fun than it sounds. I have to stand in a van serving sandwiches watching everyone else have fun! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 27-Jun-2003 1:12pm My results will come when the lecturers get around to marking them - probably a week or two |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 27-Jun-2003 1:14pm Oh no, but he still got a pretty good grade - he should be proud! Good luck in yours! I think my results come through on my birthday again this year. Another crappy birthday! lol |

| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 27-Jun-2003 6:01pm That's pretty rubbish! My little brother will get his AS results the same day I suppose. Which date though - it's usually a thursday? |
| autumnlight | (reply to Cleo) posted 28-Jun-2003 1:56pm hee hee they are so cool! |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 28-Jun-2003 1:57pm I'm not sure - I think it's either the 14th or 15th August. I haven't checked yet! |
