| elijahblue | posted 8-Jan-1999 1:26pm I think the person who created this survey is a wee bit out of touch with the music scene. |
| anonymous | posted 8-Jan-1999 1:33pm elijahblue: I think that the creator may just be out of touch with the American music scene. |
| Mimi | posted 8-Jan-1999 1:55pm I love big bands, jazz, classic, jive & hate country & western except for Willie Nelson. I can't understand the Willie Nelson part. |
| seven | posted 8-Jan-1999 2:16pm Even using your guidelines I found it difficult to click "90s Rock" because of your example of Bon Jovi. |
| milktree | posted 8-Jan-1999 4:06pm I like some of each of these, but I don't like all of any of these. |
| romkey | posted 8-Jan-1999 5:25pm I don't really think that Tori Amos/Seal/Dead Can Dance/White Zombie/Depeche Mode fits in any of these categories; they're among the artists I listen to regularly. I also regularly listen to music that would fall into many different categories... and what about Jazz? |
| romkey | posted 8-Jan-1999 5:27pm lizzie: I suspect part of the categories problem is that Wicksy's from a different island than many of us. A lot of stuff we never hear here anymore is very popular there, and vice versa |
| bill | posted 8-Jan-1999 7:14pm My musical tastes defy categorization! Basically I feel the same way as milktree and romkey. It might have been easier for me to click the types of music that I don't like at all (several on this list I could have clicked as dislikes). |
| steve | posted 8-Jan-1999 7:23pm Scary. Very scary. |
| eris | posted 8-Jan-1999 8:37pm I like many of these kinds of music, and there are a few I truly dislike. I have checked a selection of those I like. |
| magbast | posted 9-Jan-1999 11:08pm i love music of all genres...music is an important part of my life... |
| jefff | posted 10-Jan-1999 2:31pm "50s and 60s music"?! Bebop, R&B, Rockabilly are all lumped together? "70s music"?! Soul, Funk, Disco all the same thing? |
| they | posted 10-Jan-1999 3:13pm I like a lot of different music... Nirvana, Van Morrison, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Pearl Jam, U2, The Byrds, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and so on... |
| Wicksy | posted 11-Jan-1999 6:07am To elijah blue . No, I am not out of touch with the music scene, you are completely wrong. I bet I could answer more questions about music than you ever could, I also took a degree in music. What did you take yours in . Speculation Studies!! Actually, you probably didn't take one! |
| Wicksy | posted 11-Jan-1999 6:12am SEVEN : Look at what I wrote under the question. The reason I put Bon Jovi under 90s rock was because I wanted to state a group that had world wide status. If I mentioned a rock group of the 90s in the UK, I'd say Oasis but they aren't as recognized and I 'd get people writing " Who's Oasis ". Same for Jacko, anyone heard of Kavana. Well, he's big in England and he's 90s pop. " Who's Kavana " I hear people say |
| elijahblue | posted 11-Jan-1999 6:49am Wicksy: Not that it's all that relevant, but I attended performing arts high school, spent three years in New York City working as a musician, and my BA is in psychology. Since a bunch of people had a problem with the way you worded the options, you might want to look into the possibility that (*gasp*!) they weren't worded well, and understand why. Or, you could continue to have a tantrum and learn nothing from this. Your choice. |
| seven | posted 11-Jan-1999 7:43am Take your Ritalin, Wicksey. I read your clarification of the categories, as proven by my "Even using your guidelines..." phrase. My concern is whether they should be put in the "90's" section or the "80's" section, not whether they're qualified to serve as an example of an entire genre. |
| bill | posted 11-Jan-1999 8:45am I think Bon Jovi is an actor now. Wicksy, I think Oasis is actually pretty popular in the U.S. as well as U.K. I don't really like them, and it's a problem because I have to change the radio station a lot to avoid them (not much recently, but over last year or two). I haven't heard of those other two bands you mentioned though. |
| they | posted 11-Jan-1999 2:33pm Bill.. even though Oasis is popular in the U.S., I wouldn't consider it a "Rock" band... I'd say it's more "Pop"... or "Alternative"... |
| seven | posted 12-Jan-1999 7:49am If everyone's heard of it, it's not alternative. |
| lizzie | posted 12-Jan-1999 10:00am romkey: OK, point taken. In any case, I did answer the survey in the spirit it was intended, and chose 80's music. So while I nitpicked, I did do my part as a kinder, gentler SC user. |
| magbast | posted 12-Jan-1999 3:03pm i want an alternative to alternative |
| they | posted 12-Jan-1999 5:47pm seven... I don't like the term either... but I knew people would know what I was talking about.. |
| bill | posted 13-Jan-1999 8:08am There's a show on a local college radio station (WZBC - Boston College, I think) called "No Commercial Potential". You can imagine what kinds of "music" they play - nothing you'd normally here on radio. That show has convinced me that I do essentially like popular music. There are plenty of musical artists out there doing it for art's sake - and it sound terrible to me. I like to think that I don't do main-stream music, but I do. I think many of us would like to think that. I think there's deep meaning in the fact that a new genre of music was formed called "alternative" that has in essence become identical to what it was suppose to be alternative to. We're running away from ourselves. |

| bill | posted 16-Jan-1999 9:43am lisashea told me (in an email) that she was leaving forever because she was feeling persecuted. She feels the anonymous commenting feature is evil as it seems to be used for sniping and hurtful remarks. She felt there were other places on the 'net for discussion where she would be treated with more respect. |

That being said, I prefer 80's music (in most of its forms) to anything else. I also like folk and classical.
