| bill | posted 7-Jan-1999 7:50am Never, and we should encourage more ads of similar ilk. This puritanical squeamishness is silly and we should just get over it. The sooner humans can learn to accept their bodies, how they work, and how to take care of them - the sooner we can move on to more important things. |
| lizzie | posted 7-Jan-1999 9:12am Why banned? Too much information for your virgin ears? . |
| dpolicar | posted 7-Jan-1999 9:25am "never banned" is closest. I don't think advertising should necessarily be protected speech, but I personally don't have a problem with any of the items you mentioned. I'd be psyched to see more direct-marketing of commercials, though... it seems a waste of time to show me ads for products I will never use (eg, tampons). I do wonder why you didn't include toilet paper on your list... perhaps because, unlike the others, it is something you use regularly and therefore don't think of as disturbing? I dunno. |
| reality | posted 7-Jan-1999 9:55am don't watch TV and they won't bug you.... |
| cpierson | posted 7-Jan-1999 10:04am No banning. Ad writers who make tactless, intelligence-insulting ads (for these products or any others) should be beaten with bicycle chains until they cry, though. |
| Jody | posted 7-Jan-1999 10:35am It's all part of the human condition. Maybe the squeamish should watch PBS or cable TV while eating. |
| doom | posted 7-Jan-1999 11:11am How about banning news then? I have seen much more on the evening news during dinner than a tampon commercial. |
| Mimi | posted 7-Jan-1999 11:21am I think our country is becoming more uncouth all the time & I believe a lot of it has to do with television. We do not need these products in our faces all the time. |
| jjg | posted 7-Jan-1999 11:35am Two words: First Amendment. |
| dpolicar | posted 7-Jan-1999 12:18pm jjg - Applying the first amendment to commercial advertising is something I'd want to be very careful about. Not that I'm against it necessarily, but I don't think it's a simple question. |
| they | posted 7-Jan-1999 1:00pm I put never banned... if you don't want to hear about it at dinner time, turn the freaking TV off... I noticed yesterday when I was eating some fat free Pringles...(they contain Olestra)..printed on the side of the can is a warning that these chips can cause LOOSE STOOLS.... It didn't bother me while I was eating, or disgust me... I just found it VERY amusing.. |
| hunter | posted 7-Jan-1999 1:16pm Unsavory? You mean like toilet paper? Or cleaning products? How about athlete's foot remedies? Or deodorant? The idea that women's menstruation is something not to be discussed or considered, to be hidden from sight and not acknowledged has led to incredible ignorance and fear on the part of both men and women. No, I wouldn't want to see graphic depictions of it on TV, particularly, but the ads are so completely euphemistic I don't see that as a problem. And during dinner time, the TV should be off. |
| jonathan | posted 7-Jan-1999 1:56pm Interesting that most of the "unsavory products" are feminine...am I smelling a bias here? Separately, the 2nd and 3rd years of Babylon 5 had ads for some feminine products. Given B5's pretty small audience at the time, I always wondered what the demographics were that led the company to run ads on the show. |
| milktree | posted 7-Jan-1999 2:27pm I'm in favor of any technology that saves me from any commercials, however, the market should decide if it's too unsavory for TV. |
| magbast | posted 7-Jan-1999 2:58pm are there really people out there that need to be reminded to practice good hygiene? yuck! |
| Pomeranian | posted 7-Jan-1999 4:19pm I find the mute button is my friend in such matters. |
| steve | posted 7-Jan-1999 5:13pm Hey, get over it! Just get all the way over it! All this nasty, smelly stuff is a part of life, and you should just get over it. |
| eris | posted 7-Jan-1999 5:17pm I think people shouldn't watch TV during dinner. |
| Gamera | posted 8-Jan-1999 3:16am What are you doing watching television during dinner? |
| presti | posted 8-Jan-1999 2:16pm Never |
| romkey | posted 8-Jan-1999 8:37pm *never* banned... |
| bill | posted 8-Jan-1999 8:47pm jen and I used to always eat in front of the TV (and still would), now we mostly eat in front of our computers. |
| Crimson | posted 8-Jan-1999 10:19pm No, I think they should be more explicit!! I'm tired of people thinking that maxi-pads are something you use to skip through flowery fields. Ever read Connie Willis's "Even the Queen"? |
| lara | posted 12-Jan-1999 2:23pm i think they should be saved up and aired only during dinner time. |
| phi | posted 12-Jan-1999 7:31pm The television should be turned off during dinner time! |
| jettles | posted 16-Jan-1999 8:16am i don't find them to be unsavory products. i find being a female rather nice and many of these products(or most of the ones mentioned)are related to being female. they aren't graphic commercials. interesting!! |
| jettles | posted 16-Jan-1999 8:18am aaaahhh, i should have known it was you hillbilly. you never let me down!! |

| mandy | posted 10-Apr-1999 2:23am all commercials should be banned |
| eloradanan | posted 10-Jun-2006 12:05am If I had my say, all commercials would be banned. |
| flurng | posted 15-Nov-2006 7:35pm Let's face it - ladies, hemorrhoid sufferers and parents of small children all know they need these things. However, they may NOT know about new product developments on the market, if not for these very commercials. Certainly, the purpose of these ads is to sell the advertising company's product, but in so doing, they may be educating potential consumers about what's currently available. Therefore, I say let them air, and if you find such ads distasteful, just "V" chip 'em & have a happy life! |
