| Enheduanna | posted 4-Mar-2003 10:41am Of these, I have only read LoTR, Harry Potter, and some of the Narnia books. I'd say LoTR wins hands down. Also, Harry Potter isn't complete yet, so how can you say it's the best? |
| Iseult | posted 4-Mar-2003 12:07pm I am only familiar with two, LotR and HP. I like HP far better tahn LotR, but I still think that Tolkien world is far better developed. Also, this comes out of my recently-fraught hatred towards JRK for not coming up with new book more recently. |
| autumnlight | posted 4-Mar-2003 12:49pm I've read Narnia, Sword in the Stoneand Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings is far superior. |
| Biggles | posted 4-Mar-2003 12:57pm I've only read 2 of these and I really hope neither represents the pinacle of the genre! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 4-Mar-2003 12:59pm Did you read all five books of The Once and Future King? I enjoyed the middle 3, but not the first or last one. The best one was The Queen of Air and Darkeness but then I always did like the Orkney brothers the best It's been a while since I saw you here. How are you? |
| Maarten | posted 4-Mar-2003 1:04pm I'm not too fond of fantasy. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 4-Mar-2003 1:15pm Harry Potter, but mainly because I haven't read most of the others. I'm not that heavily into fantasy fiction. |
| mrnemo15 | posted 4-Mar-2003 2:36pm The Belgariad, hands down. I really loved that one. Followed by the Dragonlance Chronicles, followed by the lord of the rings, followed by Narnia. This person wrote a story based on the Harry Potter characters and world, but writes much better than J.K. Rowling ever will. You can find it at this link: http://www.fanfiction.net/read.php?storyid=656995 Tell me what you think about it, please! |
| Frostbrand | posted 4-Mar-2003 2:49pm Of that list? I haven't read most of them, but of the ones I've read I'd put the Harry Potter stuff up top (I still can't beleive these were supposed to be KIDS books! They're just too damned good!). Not listed however are The Icewind Dale Trilogy, The Dark Elf Trilogy, and The Cleric Quintet, all by R. A. Salvatore. |
| MssAmericat | posted 4-Mar-2003 2:50pm I can't say since haven't read all listed, tho one I really enjoyed on the list is the Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks |
| jettles | posted 4-Mar-2003 3:08pm i really don't read fantasy........ the only the i have read of these is the potter series. |
| ASexyBabe | posted 4-Mar-2003 3:21pm I don't like fantasy series |
| BrightBlue | posted 4-Mar-2003 3:23pm The Lord of the Rings is probably on top. Piers Anthony's Apprentice Adept series is also superb. |
| pandora | posted 4-Mar-2003 3:50pm Fantasy fiction, fantasy series, fantasy art...none of it really floats my boat. |
| Zang | posted 4-Mar-2003 6:16pm I've never read one in its entirety. |
| mandy | posted 4-Mar-2003 10:53pm DUNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Dino | posted 5-Mar-2003 4:28am Without a doubt in my mind. 'The Belgariad' (David Eddings) I implore anyone to read this series. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 5-Mar-2003 7:16am LOR I'm fond of many others: Lewis, Bradley, Moorcock, Dick, Henderson, Baum, Ballard, Pohl, .. I'm probably forgetting many cool authors. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 6-Mar-2003 7:59am I had to |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 6-Mar-2003 8:15am Key phrase was 'ever written', though indeed parts of a couple of these series were made into movies. Because of that, I certainly don't have the time myself. |
| Cain | posted 6-Mar-2003 8:28am This is a really hard question to answer. The Chronicles of Narnia were what first got me started on fantasy so I owe a lot to them. The Pern series indulges my fantasy of an ideal world filled with telepathy and dragons. The Wheel of Time has one of the richest and most intricate plots I've ever had the good fortune to read. The Belgariad was one of the most considerate bithday presents I've received (from a swedish family who had no love for fantasy). The Lord of the Rings has been made into some of the most fantastic cinema I've ever seen. The Gormenghast Trilogy got me through a summer where I should, by rights, have gone insane and inspired me to use my imagination in ways I never dreamed possible. So in conclusion, I dunno!! Excellent survey! |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 6-Mar-2003 9:09am I caught that after I entered my answer, but I really don't have the time to read them. |
| bond_girl | posted 7-Mar-2003 4:17pm The Chronicles of Narnia |
| darmichar | posted 10-Mar-2003 12:27pm Perhaps my ideas of Fantasy are a bit off, but The Dark Tower Series by Steven King are my favorites. |
| Glassa | posted 11-Mar-2003 2:04pm Star Trek. Live long and prosper. |
| Yarbroughhunter | posted 11-Mar-2003 5:24pm Hey |
| gimmy_ju | posted 30-Mar-2003 2:23pm I love the lord of the rings...but i'm kinda mad at who ever picked out the actors for the movies...i was so excited to finally see the motion picture...and you know what i couldn't pay any attention to it...yah know why? the actors were soooooo hot :) |
| gimmy_ju | posted 30-Mar-2003 2:26pm oh wait.....i forgot about the narnia books... lovely actually any fantasy is nice...it lets me got out of this life...i hate it here...it's nice to have a majic ring once in a while, or a cloak, or a majic land far off in the middle of no where that no one but you and a few of your friends know about |
| ForbesLopez | posted 1-Apr-2003 6:12pm If you liked Narnia, The Archives of anthropos by John White are great |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 14-Apr-2003 3:46pm I've only read the second one strangely enough, just to so things backwards. It's been a while since I've been here! I hope you are well and uni is going great! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 16-Apr-2003 10:35am Uni's great! I'm having a brilliant time even though the work really piles up at times. I'm at home for Easter until Sunday though. |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 18-Apr-2003 6:43am That's cool. I'm glad you're having a good time! I got accepted at manchester uni and manchester met! but I'm not sure which to go for! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 18-Apr-2003 9:57am I had friends who went to both. My friend who went to Manchester Met dropped our while my friends at Manchester University mostly seem to love it. Except for my brother, who isn't having a great time.... |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 18-Apr-2003 7:06pm Awwww. I'm really sorry for your brother! I hope whatever it is sorts itself out for him. He has aspergers right? I declined manchester uni in the end. I know it's a better uni, but I needed 3 B's and I don't know if I'm realistically going to get them. Though I'll be kicking myself if I do now! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 20-Apr-2003 12:05pm Could you not have accepted it as your first choice, and Manchester Met as your insurance? If you do get better grades than you expect, you can always try and get into Manchester Uni through clearing. I knew people who got places at really good universities through clearing because so many people got the grades for their first choices so there were loads of insurance places left everywhere. There were even places in clearing for Vet Science! |
| autumnlight | posted 23-Apr-2003 10:37am I didn't want to set myself up for a fall. Plus if you are applying for accomodation at manchester met, you can only send the form off if you have accepted a place there, and I want first choice at good accomodation. I want to change my chosen degree from History with Philosophy to Histroy with English. It's all vety complicated and scary! |
| Biggles | (reply to autumnlight) posted 23-Apr-2003 12:05pm What accommodation are you going for? It's shared with Manchester Uni and UMIST isn't it? My brother's in Chandros next year (Whitworth Park last year), and one of my friends is either going to be in Grosvenor or Chandros (but they haven't got back to her yet). Sorting out all the details of uni *is* scary! I think virtually everyone is happy wherever they end up and whatever they're doing though. Most unis seem to have plenty of scope for changing courses though if you choose wrong Coming away to university is the best thing that I've done Why English rather than Philosophy? |
| autumnlight | (reply to Biggles) posted 25-Apr-2003 10:59am I've actually just sorted out a house share with my friends because I REALLY don't want to go into halls. I'm applying for Private Halls as a safety net anyway, because they tend to be better than the university run ones. I'm glad you can change, I want to change mine. I didn't realise how much I enjoyed english! I know I'm good at doing it, whereas I've never tried Philosophy before, and I genuinely enjoy reading and writing essays. (That makes me sad I realise!) I'm glad you're enjoying uni,I hope I love it too! |
