I think that they are...err..writers.

I think they consider themselves to be artists. Writing is an art and, like all types of art, is subjective. There will always be people who love your work, and people who hate it. If someone describes him/herself as a writer, then all the power to them.

That they write fiction and are good enough at it to do that as their primary job rather than struggle with doing that at the same time they're doing something else.

That's what I'd initially think of! I don't imagine that's true a lot of the time.

i usually ask some more questions about what that means if i don't know their work. but i don't have any preconceived notions about them.

I don't think any one thing in particular. It depends on the writer.

I really don't think much about it. I guess I assume they are writers. Just like if somebody told me they were an accountant or a doctor or a housewife, I would probably believe them and let it go at that.

I have described myself this way before. I have never been professionally published. I've never really tried. I write for me. To purge things. I am a writer. I have a folder full of my poems and prose and musings and outlines and story ideas. I loved Hypertales. I liked being able to start stories and then let them go to be added to and completed. Everyone I have shared my writing with has smiled and said, "Wow! You should be a writer!!"
My reply is always the same, "I am."

If you write, you are a writer. Now, whether your writing sucks or not, whole different story * raspberry *

Yes not all those who write are writers for me.But all those who write as writers are writers, maybe bad writers but writers nonetheless.Usually you can spot a writer if he/she was writing before 13 or/and keeps after 19! * wink *

I suppose it depends on whether or not I've read anything they've written, among other things.

It depends on the person. Some people act really stuck-up about being "Writers", as if it makes them somehow more important or talented than other people. However, some writers are very nice, and they're really fun to be with. It really depends on the personality of the so-called "Writer"

If someone described themself as just a "writer", then I'd generally think they were being pretentious. Because, in reality, the term "writer" covers a large range of professions, including journalists, reporters, novelists, scriptwriters, diarists, essayists, poets, songwriters, etc, and most people who actually earn their living from writing consider themselves to be in one of these (or other) categories rather than just being a "writer". If someone told me they were a writer, I'd want to know what kind of material they wrote.

I think they have creative souls and use their gift to make themselves and others happy through their works.

For those who think that "writers" are those who cant hold jobs, etc. it's not true. My very best friend is a writer. She also holds a steady job, goes to school, and has an internship with a local publishing firm. Yet she still has time to write. One day she'll finish a novel or short story and it will be published in a famous magazine or by a well-known company. She's already had many things published by our schools. She's quite talented. Never diss a writer.

Okay, but if you do more than one of those things you just say writer! The point is writing not what you write.Actually the point is art,but saying I'm an artist sounds a bit pretentious sometimes even if it's true.
