| Enheduanna | posted 25-Jan-2003 10:13pm Probably not. There are some biblical names I like, but I wouldn't be naming my child after the biblical character specifically. |
| Frostbrand | posted 26-Jan-2003 12:36am I did this survey once before. Actually twice. The seocnd time I spelled 'pet' right. |
| Biggles | posted 26-Jan-2003 6:12am Not after a unique name in a film or book (like in LotR) or an existing name that only really came to public attention because of the book or film (or tv as in the case of the French couple who were banned from calling their child Zebedeee because of the links with The Magic Roundabout). Perhaps a name that existed prior to the book or film but that I had mostly heard of via that, or liked it having read it or heard it in that way. It would probably have to be a reasonably minority book/film though. There's some nice names in the Cadfael books actually. Saxon names that no-one has anymore. I always thought Osama was a nice name...... |
| kaleb777 | posted 26-Jan-2003 7:29am I'd consider it sure, even though I am never having children. |
| msgman | posted 26-Jan-2003 10:08am I think I'd be inclined to avoid names that are popular primarily due to their association with fictional characters. |
| Biggles | (reply to msgman) posted 26-Jan-2003 10:09am See, that's what I was trying to say. I think I should work on being more concise! |
| juliw | posted 26-Jan-2003 1:14pm Probably not if that was the only reason for me selecting that name. |
| mandy | posted 26-Jan-2003 3:21pm My daughter was named after a television character and a boarding school in a book. I read Enid Blyton's Malory Towers series as a little gurl. Mallory from Family Ties was my favorite character on television in the 80's. Mallory was the only gurl's name my husband and I could agree on. He wanted to name a gurl Tabitha after Tabitha on Bewitched. I said, "NO!" Now my daughter is a practicing Wiccan. Who'd have thunk it? |
| mandy | posted 26-Jan-2003 3:25pm If I ever had another little gurl I'd name her Piper, after an X-Files episode called Piper Maru. Gillian Anderson even named her daughter Piper Maru. I love the name. Adore it. Mallory swear she's naming any children she adopts, Willow and Zander after characters on Buffy |
| anonymous | posted 26-Jan-2003 5:34pm I named my daughter Deep Throat and my son Edward Penishands. |
| Glassa | posted 26-Jan-2003 10:10pm If I had a child and liked the particular name I would. |
| Dino | posted 27-Jan-2003 8:06am Yes, some movies or books are inspirational. I would name my daughter, should that event ever occur (!), Magenta. This is from the movie, 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'. |

| dora | posted 27-Jan-2003 3:20pm I don't think I want to have children but never say never so I picked I would consider it. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 27-Jan-2003 3:31pm When I was pregnant (eons ago), the name I had picked for a girl was Laura Elizabeth (after Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder-the children's author). |
| wolfchik9 | posted 28-Jan-2003 3:38am Yes, I have often wanted to name my future children after fictional characters. When I was little I wanted to name my daughter Alyssa Juliet after Alyssa Milano and Juliet from Romeo & Juliet. I wanted to name my some Jeremy Alexander because (a) his initials would be the reverse of his sister and (b) the boy around the corner was named Jeremy and Alexander was the name that sounded best with it. My friend Blake (it's a girl) was named after a character on Dallas, I think. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 28-Jan-2003 6:31am No, I wouldn't do it knowingly, not that it couldn't happen by chance, but then again I'm not planing on having anymore kids. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to anonymous) posted 28-Jan-2003 6:39am Thats good |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to mandy) posted 28-Jan-2003 6:41am I was LMAO to |
| Maarten | posted 28-Jan-2003 6:47am If it was a 'normal' name, why not? So no Frodo's or Xena's. |
| mischy | posted 28-Jan-2003 8:46am I am going to name one of my kids after me! |
| lily333 | posted 28-Jan-2003 8:39pm When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was sure I was having a boy so I didn't have any girl names picked out. When I was in the hospital I had no idea what to name her until I was watching a soap opera and heard the name Amanda on the show. At that time Amanda was not a common name at all yet and I fell in love with it. After that it seemed everyone was naming their daughters Amanda. |
| mandy | (reply to lily333) posted 28-Jan-2003 9:16pm It's actually the world's most beautiful name....no...really |
| lily333 | (reply to mandy) posted 29-Jan-2003 10:46am I still love it too. |
| Frostbrand | posted 29-Jan-2003 3:44pm I don't have any problem with naming kids after characters like this, as long as it's because the name as signifigance. If you're only doing it cause it sounds cool, then you are probably goign to damge your child. I am so tired of fads and trneds in parenting. Nowadays people might as well start saying, "Here's my kid it goes with my couch!" But soemthing that really bugs me, is when people THINK you've named your child after a character, when you really didn't. For most of my life I've just had a feeling that my first child would be a girl, and that I'd name her Rachel. I've felt this way for many, many years, and quite honestly I just wanna punch every stupid git who thinks I'm naming her after Jennifer Aniston's character on Friends. > |
| Glassa | (reply to wolfchik9) posted 29-Jan-2003 11:07pm It's probably good that you didn't name your daughter Alyssa. My first name is Alisa (same pronunciation) and NOONE gets it right. They call me Alisha, Alison, A-Lisa, etc. It pisses me off, because it's not that hard. So I go by Lisa. It's easier for people to understand. |
| scrubnurse | posted 30-Jan-2003 3:23am Yes, I would consider it, but probably only because I liked the name and not because of the character. |
| wolfchik9 | (reply to Glassa) posted 30-Jan-2003 5:35pm Thanks for the tip... I think my SO has banned than name anyway. It's been a long time since I was dead-set on those names anyway. |
| grmbrand | posted 30-Jan-2003 7:25pm Sure. Zaphod always struck me as a strong, manly name. |
| Jemmy | posted 31-Jan-2003 12:11pm If I liked the name and it wasn't too obvious. |
| candy02024 | posted 17-Feb-2003 9:13pm I am pregnant right now. I don't know whether it is a boy or a girl. If my child is a little boy I would like to name him "Jonas" after a character in "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. That book inspired me so much. I think my child would be honored to have a name that means that much. |
| linny21 | posted 9-Mar-2003 5:44pm No kids for me. If I liked the name, why not? |
| linny21 | (reply to anonymous) posted 9-Mar-2003 5:50pm That is hilarious! |
| cabinfever | posted 4-Nov-2005 1:06am I didn't necessarily name my daughter after the character, but I really liked the sound and meaning of the name. |
| RGirl | posted 31-Jan-2006 9:17pm If I liked the name, not because I liked the character. I am named from a character in a book. My brother is named from a guy from The Moody Blues. |

I would name my cats after characters from a TV show, though
