| Zang | posted 19-Jan-2003 6:12pm I think they grow sort of like watermelons and squash. On the ground, but I guess they don't have vines and such, so probably more like cabbages. I've never seen them growing, even when I was in Southeast Asia...real fresh pineapple is incredible. You just can't get them like that here. |

| Biggles | posted 19-Jan-2003 8:10pm I always have an image in my mind of them growing on trees (unlike bananas Good survey. |
| Enheduanna | posted 19-Jan-2003 8:45pm I think they grow most like cabbages, but with more plant around them. |
| Iseult | posted 19-Jan-2003 8:48pm I always thought they grow on palm tree, like coconuts. |
| Matt | posted 19-Jan-2003 10:51pm Sticking out of the ground, like cabbages |
| dora | (reply to Biggles) posted 20-Jan-2003 2:01am Bananas don't grow up on trees? I'm so ignorant!! |
| Zang | (reply to dora) posted 20-Jan-2003 3:04am They grow just like apples...except on pine trees right? |
| kaleb777 | posted 20-Jan-2003 3:25am There are fields of pineapples not far from me. They are succulents, looking sort of like agave cactus from a distance. The pineapple forms in the centre of the plant. |
| dora | (reply to Zang) posted 20-Jan-2003 4:38am I really don't know! I just buy them in supermarkets |
| Dino | posted 20-Jan-2003 7:43am On trees, like bananas. Mmmmm, I've never seen a pineapple grow. |

| romkey | (reply to Dino) posted 20-Jan-2003 2:04pm really fresh pineapple is like night and day compared to pineapple from most grocery stores... it's tender and sweet and not tart at all... |
| lily333 | posted 20-Jan-2003 5:25pm trees |
| msgman | posted 21-Jan-2003 12:43pm The correct answer is that they stick out of the ground, similar to cabbages but with spiky leaves around them. An alternative way of comparing them is to a very short and stubby maize (corn) plant. There's a picture of one in a tub here: http://www.iflorist.com/en/act/images/items/or_10136l.jpg And here's a field of cultivated pineapples: http://agrolink.moa.my/comoditi/nenas/pa_row.jpg If you take a fresh pineapple from the supermarket, cut the top off and then put it in a dish of water, a new pineapple will grow out of the top! |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 21-Jan-2003 1:53pm I don't know and I don't care because I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE PINEAPPLE! |

| CarolL | (reply to msgman) posted 25-Jan-2003 6:10am No way!!! How long does it take? |
| romkey | (reply to msgman) posted 25-Jan-2003 11:41am fractal pineappes I knew there was a pineapple survey here somewhere. I'd already forgotten |
| msgman | (reply to CarolL) posted 25-Jan-2003 12:06pm What, how long does it take to grow a fresh pineapple from an old one? the plant will develop pretty quickly, but it may not produce a fruit (which is the pineapple) straight away. It needs to be kept nice and warm to produce a pineapple. |
| grmbrand | posted 31-Jan-2003 1:52pm On trees, like bananas. |

| iharterika | posted 4-Apr-2006 2:10am ok, so my mom goes to work thinking it's an average day when she hears some people outside her office talking about pineapples. they're talking about how they grow from the ground and my mom comes thinking it's april fool's and that these people are full of it. sure enough, she checks out google and low and behold: they grow from the ground. by the way they are shaped, i'm guesing that everything below the leaves is undergorund while the leaves stick out, just like carrots. |
| iharterika | posted 4-Apr-2006 2:15am ok, i found a picture http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/rooiman/... |
