How do pineapples grow?

What do you think? Here's a list of some of the ways that people think they grow, but only one of them is correct. Which is it?

Please try and answer without looking it up * smile *

VotesAnswer
1On large bushes, like blackberries
3In the ground, like carrots
17Sticking out of the ground, like cabbages
2On ground-cover bushes, like strawberries
2In water, like water-lilies
35On trees, like bananas
0On climbing vines, like grapes
0Parasitically on other plants, like mistletoe
7How the heck should I know? As far as I'm concerned, they come from supermarkets!
7Despite the fact that this is a quiz and the correct answer is already listed, I insist on having this "other" option available to me

I think they grow sort of like watermelons and squash. On the ground, but I guess they don't have vines and such, so probably more like cabbages. I've never seen them growing, even when I was in Southeast Asia...real fresh pineapple is incredible. You just can't get them like that here.

I always have an image in my mind of them growing on trees (unlike bananas * raspberry * ) but I'd wager that's wrong! * grin *

Good survey.

There are fields of pineapples not far from me. They are succulents, looking sort of like agave cactus from a distance. The pineapple forms in the centre of the plant.

really fresh pineapple is like night and day compared to pineapple from most grocery stores... it's tender and sweet and not tart at all...

The correct answer is that they stick out of the ground, similar to cabbages but with spiky leaves around them. An alternative way of comparing them is to a very short and stubby maize (corn) plant.

There's a picture of one in a tub here:

And here's a field of cultivated pineapples:

If you take a fresh pineapple from the supermarket, cut the top off and then put it in a dish of water, a new pineapple will grow out of the top!

What, how long does it take to grow a fresh pineapple from an old one? the plant will develop pretty quickly, but it may not produce a fruit (which is the pineapple) straight away. It needs to be kept nice and warm to produce a pineapple.

ok, so my mom goes to work thinking it's an average day when she hears some people outside her office talking about pineapples. they're talking about how they grow from the ground and my mom comes thinking it's april fool's and that these people are full of it. sure enough, she checks out google and low and behold: they grow from the ground. by the way they are shaped, i'm guesing that everything below the leaves is undergorund while the leaves stick out, just like carrots.
