Jeez, your company sure gave you some good gifts! Mine gave us stuff like a calendar, a notepad, some chocolate covered coffee beans, one of those baseball-type cloth caps with the company's name on it, and some other little inexpensive items. An air purifier especially sounds good. What does one do with a lot of stuff when they don't really intend to use it and kinda hate to toss it out...? I usually keep unwanted stuff for a while and give it to the laundromat (or a thrift store if it's worth anything.) The lip balms sound good, so do the bath oils, colognes and shower gels. It depends on what kind of books they are -- romance novels I'd not be interested in, for example.... |

Actually, the books are inspirational/Christian type books.. I have no interest at all in them. To be honest, I don't use Avon products at all. What I do is this-get a few large baskets together and let my friends pick through it and take what they want... then I take the rest of the stuff to my grandma's house on xmas and all the women dig through it like a pack of wild dogs.
We also have this program at work called the 12 days of Christmas.. where we get a small present each day for 12 days(post-its, hand creams, pens, etc.). It helps to get us through a full 8-10 hours of constant calls and difficult callers. Also, when you work in-house(I work at home), the bosses come around with a cart and cans of pop through-out the shift for us.
I can't complain.. the company I work for is awesome... it's the job itself that's tough. |

You got such a cool job. What ever it is. The people sound like really nice people to work with. I too,can not get into the Christian/inspirational type books.Cept maybe Chicken Soup for the Soul kind of stuff. But I love the self help books of any kind(I need A LOT of help so,I try to get it anyway I can) I love books like Guinness World Records stuff etc. |
they | | (reply to Cleo) posted 29-Dec-2002 12:12pm |
I collect books.. love'em! Every surface of my house has books on it almost. Even though I'm not christian, I do have a bible of my own for reference purposes. My daughter has two bibles that my mother-in-law gave her. But when I start getting books from work like "God's little inspirational book for Dads" or "Email from God for Teens", I give them away. I do order entry/account services for Avon Reps. I'm attached to a headset and keyboard all day long so it's not real easy when you're having a bad day... they count every second of our day, and we're being recorded randomly several times a day. We are graded on every single thing we say or do, and our call handle time is one of the main things looked at in job performance. So when you call an 800#, give that guy a break... he's being watched and long calls make him look bad. |

Oh, I see. I too would not be interested in those books. Nor the Avon products. But one can always pass them on to a thrift store or a person one knows who might appreciate 'em, true. I do like that 12 days of Christmas you guys have. You are SO lucky to work from home. This was once my main dream, to be a telecommuter, but no one here (agencies, job agents, etc.) knows about anything like this available. Are you a telemarketer? I am not interested in this myself, but was thinking more along the lines of verbatim home typing and/or transcription. I got ripped off once when I paid money to a work-from-home company and they did not have any real jobs available. |
| Cleo | | (reply to they) posted 30-Dec-2002 12:18am |
I see your point about the "Email from God for teens" thing.I too would prefer to choose what I'd like to read(as far as Bible type books go) rather than have it sent or bought for me. Why do long calls make him/her look bad? One would think that, that's a good thing. Seeing as how I would sometimes(not often but sometimes)tend to get a bit chatty with the person on the other end of the line.Especially if they sound so helpful & personable.Does the company(Avon)frown down on the employee if they are taking to much time to full fill an order from the customer? |
they | | (reply to Galomorro) posted 30-Dec-2002 12:21am |
It's more like customer service... like when you call the phone company, the people that you talk to. I've been doing it since High School.. I've also worked for Macy's Credit Card Services, GE card services, and Directv. I would never do telemarketing.. that has to be one of the worst jobs out there. |
they | | (reply to Cleo) posted 30-Dec-2002 12:40am |
It's so funny to talk to someone who doesn't realize that it's a bad thing since I live that truth all day long, every day. Now that I think about it, I guess I didn't realize that until I got into this line of work either. Since our calls are being listened to and recorded, we can't ever say what we really mean.. so conversation is pretty useless. For the most part, when I respond to a person, or laugh at her joke - I'm just humoring her for the sake of good customer service. I hate to speak with chatters(no offense) because I don't want to instigate further conversation, because ANYTHING I say could cause some people to get offended(trust me)and because I'm being closely monitored. I don't think any company would frown on an employee for spending as much time as needed with a customer, however, time is money. If it's possible to make that call shorter, we are required to do just that. Every time we ask you "Is there anything else I can help you with?", it is the equivalent of a waitress returning to ask if you need anything else at the end of a meal... she's trying to empty her tables so more customers can be served(I know that from working at a restaurant in high school). When I might take 100 calls in a day, another person in the call center might take 50. Who's making more money for the company? On a side note, Thanks for my Xmas card! I just got it today. That was really nice, I was totally not expecting it. |
| Cleo | | (reply to they) posted 30-Dec-2002 9:50am |
Wow! I see what you mean now. Do you suppose that all (other)customer service calls like Sears,Target etc. have their calls monitored also? How weird! Kinda like BIG BROTHER listening in on my calls.I never thought of it that way before. Do you take orders from people that call a certain number? Or how does it work? I really don't understand how you get to talk to people from home. Do you have a call list or something? I was just curious cause I used to be a telephone solicitor in 1972/1973 & we worked in a boiler room environment & was given a call sheet to call people. I was just wondering how AVON does it now.Since they have their Avon Books floating around out there. Not only that but I haven't been able to buy any AVON in 3 years or so. Lost my connection. I remember when there used to be someone who ACTUALLY rang your doorbell & said "AVON calling" That was so cool. But,alas those days are forever dead & gone. |
they | | (reply to Cleo) posted 30-Dec-2002 10:14am |
I guarantee that all of those places record their calls. You should get a message while your holding, infoming you of that. The intent of listening to the call is good though, not only are they making sure we're doing our jobs correctly but they can find out what people are calling about to serve them better.
My computer is connected to the company so that I can receive and transmit information the same way that you would do with your computer if you were working in the building. I'm getting inbound calls, I never dial out. When someone calls the company, the calls are routed to me through a business # the phone company set up for me. I have company provided equipment to make it all work(a really nice dell flat screen among other things).
If you want to order avon, you can go to www.avon.com or you can call 1-800-FOR-AVON and you will be given a rep in your area to order from. I'm sure there are hundreds in your area.
Now I sound like a commercial, but screw it.. I get yearly checks based on company sales and I have stock in the company so buy, buy, buy! |
| Cleo | | (reply to they) posted 30-Dec-2002 10:56am |
Good point on the "serving the customers better thing." OHHHHH! I do envy you woman!I want a Dell flat screen SO bad. What's so wrong about advertising for your company? Nothing! I love AVON! I grew up on AVON! My mother(God rest her soul)used to buy AVON when I was a child back in the 50's. **has a happy childhood moment** But yes! I think I will take you up on that offer of the dot com address. Thanks! |

The only memory I have of Avon is a stinky glass boot of my grandfathers that we used to play with as kids. Since I started working for the company, I was exposed to the smell of Wild Country cologne and realize now that we were playing with a decanter. |
| Cleo | | (reply to they) posted 30-Dec-2002 11:26am |
I have many old AVON decanters. But,my favorite fragrance is "Sweet Honesty" There was a time when AVON made a perfume called "Lemon Velvet" I wish they would bring that one back. I loved it! As for the mens cologne I never really cared for any of them. They kinda all smelled the same to me. Not like "High Karate" I loved that mens cologne. WAY before your time. |
they | | (reply to Cleo) posted 30-Dec-2002 11:46am |
The soft musks aren't half bad either.. I also have a bottle of millenia, which is now discontinued.. and I like it. I don't usually wear perfume though, my body kills the smell. It's not that I stink, but the smell of perfume fades faster on me I think. I do better with essential oils. |
| Cleo | | (reply to they) posted 30-Dec-2002 11:50am |
I know! I have to keep applying it. I seem can't smell it,so I keep putting more & more & more.My family usual says that I put too much on.But,I can't help it! I just can't smell the dang thing anymore. I wonder if it has anything to do with me getting older & stuff. |

I had a telemarketing job for one day. I realized that there were only two ways to make sales. 1. Get someone who does not speak english as a first language. Talk fast and sound excited. 2. Old people who don't hear well. Talk fast and sound excited.
Halfway through my shift on that first day, I was called into the boss's office and chastised for not making enough sales. The first day! Fudge them. |

I got a microscope - up to 400x magnification. I'm hoping to buy a 100x objective for it so that it will magnify up to 1000x. It'll cost about £50 but I got a prize at my old school's certificate presentation evening. The Wigram prize for outstanding achievement - it was shared between 8 of us, normally it's fewer. We got £350 each! The son of someone who went to the school years ago when it was a grammar (private) school provides the money for the prize - he must be really rich. Anyway, I want to spend it on something in particular rather than just use it to pay off part of the debt I'm getting into by going to university. £350 isn't going to make much difference to that I got some money from my grandparents too, I spent some of that on a dress. It's the only one that I've seen that I quite liked, but I'm not entirely convinced. I want to be sure about it if I keep it - it cost £60 and that's too much money to be throwing around (it *was* half-price though...) I got a couple of books about The West Wing which are very interesting - did you know that Sam and Josh were originally scat the other way around? Sick and wrong!!! Rob Lowe is the most boring actor and deserved the most boring part!!! Um, oh I got a vegetarian cookery book by Delia Smith and a microwave cookery book for uni. I got two amazing Bagpuss mice that sing when you squeeze them. They're amazingly sweet but the batteries are non-replaceable so they'll probably run out in the next few months I got lots and lots of sweets My brother got me one of those natural light lightbulbs - supposed to be good for SAD. Not that I know if I have that, but it may help. I'm going to stop now before i get confused bwteen my birthday and Christmas. In fact, I think I already am - The West Wing books were for my birthday..... Oh, here's a picture of the dress I bought. Except the one I bought has thin straps and I didn't buy the stole thing. http://www.debenhams.com/jv/product_details_jv.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=4159541&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1470779&bmUID=1041363569622 It looks okay on me, and I didn't want a black one, but I'm not completely convinced. |

My son said that even though it was nice to be thought of, it was obvious that Kevin's mom hadn't put much thought into the gifts. From me they got goodies from Harry and David. When I sell telephone specials, cross-sells or upsells, I received 25 cents in Bear Creek Bucks and accumulated $82 in Bear Creek Bucks for the week they were running the contest. My son and his roomies got a box of cheesecake petit fours, 2 small baklava, 2 bags of chocolate truffles and a cinnamon swirl which gave them lots of goodies to munch on while they were roleplaying. I also sent over some homemade Fantasy Fudge as well. |
