Review these "headlines" to recent historic events (1970-present) then match the sets of movies that were released the same year as the event.

Historic Event - use the numbers next to these events to choose the number for the films (below); the correlation of the event and the movies is that they came to be in the same year. (As you can see, three or four movies are provided from that year to help jog the memory.)

1. Initially, 30 killed; 135,000 people evacuated in 20-mile radius; worst nuclear accident in world history - Chernobyl

2. President Nixon resigns as a result of two-year long investigation called "Watergate"

3. Space Shuttle Challenger explodes 10 miles above Florida's coastline

4. "Massacres" occur during pro-democracy protests in China leading to hundreds of civilian deaths in the streets of Beijing

5. Mt St Helen's spills enough ash to cover depth of a football field for 150 miles in just one of the sixty massive explosions from the (former) mountain throughout the same year

6. Major earthquake strikes coast of Mexico; more than 20,000 deaths in Mexico City

7. Four students killed by the action of National Guardsman during demonstration at Kent State University, in US

8. Princess Diana killed in car crash, Paris

9. For his contribution to effectively ending the Cold War, President Gorbachev is awarded Nobel Peace Prize, as Laureate

10. Nelson Mandela is freed from political imprisonment; his powerful speeches and delivery of them later steers him to becoming first South Africa President

Too much hard work for me. Nice effort though.

The options don't match the answers, and you would have thought that given the 30 year span there would be 10 different years. Pity, it was a nice idea.

Chernobyl, Top Gun, 1986
Nixon, Young Frankenstein, 1974
Challenger, Top Gun again, 1986 again
Tiananmen Square, Batman, 1989
Mt St Helens, The Shining, 1980
Mexico City, Cocoon, 1985
Kent State, Patton, 1970
Diana, Titanic, 1997
Gorbachev, Ghost or Dick Tracy, 1990
Mandela, Dick Tracy or Ghost, 1990 again

Unused year, Die Hard, 1998.

The only one I can guess is the most recent--Princess Diana and As Good as it Gets, etc. On the rest, I have no idea. Too many of these are blended together too close in my memory to be able to distinguish.

Whew! That was tough! Too many clustered around the late 80s and early 90s! I found the earliest ones the easiest:

1970 - Kent State - MASH
1974? - Watergate - Young Frankenstein
1980 - Mount St. Helen's - Blues Brothers
1981? - Chernobyl - Ferris Bueller
1986? - Challenger - Dick Tracy
1987? - earthquake - Cook Thief
1989? - pro-democracy - Color Purple
1991? - Mandela - Roger Rabbit?
1993? - Gorbachev - Home Alone
1999? - Diana - Titanic

I'm just guessing most of the dates. I thought most of the movies were older, and the incidents were more recent, so I had to shuffle things around a bit to make them match up. I haven't seen most of these movies.

Good challenge! Well done! * yes *

Is icurok correct? He seems to be speaking with some authority, (as if he cheated or something...) * wink *

Pah! Cheat! Moi! I have to admit that if it had just been the historical events I would have had a little more trouble, but I'm a total nerd when it comes to film trivia so I managed to guess the events I didn't know for sure (like Watergate, the Kent State shootings and Mt. St Helens) by using the films.

So you didn't check a reference or anything? That's what I meant. I was just kind of kidding about the "cheating". I thought you might have looked it up afterwards.

Kent State and Mt. St. Helen's were the only two I WAS able to date! * wink * I checked out what you said, and it looks like you are quite correct from what I can see. I think I was thrown off considerably by my expectation that everything would line up nicely without any duplicates or leftovers.

Kent State, Watergate and Mt St Helens are the only three I had trouble with because they're the only three I have no living memory of, although I guessed which order they occured in and applied that to the fact that I knew Patton, Young Frankenstein and the Shining came out in 1970, 1974 and 1980 respectively (as I have them all on tape). I remember Chernobyl and the Challenger disaster both being 1986 (it was also the year the Prince Andrew was married to Sarah Ferguson). The date of Princess Diana's death is something that's ingrained on every British mind whether they want it or not, and it's probably the closest thing we Brits have to a "Where were you when you heard that Kennedy had been shot?" moment.

I remember all three of those, but Watergate was strung out over a few years, unlike the other two. I also remember the challenger thing because one of my buddies woke me up and asked if I wanted to watch it explode over and over again on every channel. I know I was living in that place in 1985 and 1986 so I figured it was 1986. I saw Young Frankenstein in the theater, so I knew that was around 1974 or 1975 because of the friends I saw it with.
