| Zang | posted 21-Dec-2002 11:46am Right now I'm listening to Scott Walker "Sings Jacques Brel". I guess he's pretty obscure. He was popular in the UK in the late sixties and early seventies. He did a lot of covers of Jacques Brel tunes on his regular albums. This one is a compilation that brings them all together. I listen to a lot of obscure music. I always have. |
| LindaH | posted 21-Dec-2002 11:56am I never know how well known the music I listen to is, because I don't pay any attention to popular culture. It's happened on occasion, I'll buy a tape I heard about through an obscure source, and then find out later that musician is all over the radio. So...... I'm not saying. |

| BrightBlue | posted 21-Dec-2002 2:32pm The Rednex, a Swedish country/techno group. "The first bio explained that the band was from USA and that they were found by chance in the isolated, forgotten and severely in-bred village of Brunkeflo City in Idaho, USA. The only valuable gene that had survived in this small genetically massacred community was the gene to play music. They were brought back to Sweden to record an album. This made-up story was sent out as the official biography." |
| Biggles | posted 21-Dec-2002 2:39pm Oh, the group that I put a link up for have a tour of the US East coast planned - it's on their website. Worth seeing if any of you are close - they're very funny and entertaining. |
| romkey | posted 21-Dec-2002 4:53pm Sigur Ros Godspeed You Black Emperor! and the various side projects Sky Cries Mary Boiled In Lead and Cordelia's Dad I'm not really sure if Bongwater is obscure or not... or Goldfrapp, Hooverphonic or Locust |

| Dino | (reply to Biggles) posted 21-Dec-2002 6:33pm And there was you not into music. I listened to 'Take on Me' - they were good. |
| dora | posted 21-Dec-2002 7:43pm Well "obscure" maybe is not the word but I remember a survey I did about one of my favorite singers,Neko Case, and the reaction was something like "Oh,Neko WHO? Who the fudge is she? Who cares!" I also like Ryan Adams (not Bryan),Black 47,the Pogues,The Levellers,The Mollys,Whiskeytown...really I don't consider those artists "obscure",but not known as let's say the Beatles or whatever... |
| dora | (reply to Zang) posted 21-Dec-2002 7:45pm Scott Engel? Scott Walker? Walker Brothers? |
| dora | posted 21-Dec-2002 7:48pm Oh god,I just noticed that I know a lot of your obscure music... I didn't know I was some kind of music encyclopedia but maybe I am... |
| Galomorro | posted 21-Dec-2002 7:58pm I can't really answer this because I listen to World music. The music and artists I listen to are no doubt fairly well-known, especially to fans of traditional music, in their countries of origin. Fados from Portugal and sambas from Brazil would be a couple examples, done by older artists, some of 'em no longer with us. |
| Matt | (reply to Zang) posted 22-Dec-2002 12:33am Do you listen to Jacques Brel too? |
| Matt | posted 22-Dec-2002 12:34am The one I listen to the most is probably Phil Ochs, a folk singer I like alot. |
| mandy | posted 22-Dec-2002 2:50am I know Matt's answer to this one |

| Zang | (reply to dora) posted 22-Dec-2002 11:06am Ahh! I guess he isn't THAT obscure... |
| Zang | (reply to Matt) posted 22-Dec-2002 11:17am At your suggestion, I just put some on right now. I have a collection of French Pop; Brigitte Bardot, Edith Piaf, Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin, Jacques Brel, Michel Sardou and Serge Gainsbourg. Most of it is from the 1960s. |
| Zang | (reply to romkey) posted 22-Dec-2002 11:35am Sigur Ros and Godspeed You Black Emperor! are both right up my alley. Maarten and I were just discussing GYBE the other day...They're from Canada. |
| Zang | (reply to sonikJ) posted 22-Dec-2002 11:41am I think you win for most obscure so far. The only one I'm familiar with is Delerium. They're from Vancouver. Although I don't know Bill Leeb personally, we've been hanging in the same social scene for years, and we know a lot of the same people. |
| dora | (reply to Zang) posted 22-Dec-2002 12:07pm |
| dora | (reply to sonikJ) posted 22-Dec-2002 12:08pm I heard the name Southern Culture of the Skids...but just the name.Zang is right you're pretty obscure! |
| NthenSome | posted 22-Dec-2002 3:18pm I can't really tell. It's too...obscure, I guess, to describe. |
| NthenSome | posted 22-Dec-2002 3:20pm You said, "I never know how well known the music I listen to is, because I don't pay any attention to popular culture." I think that classifies all the music you listen to as "obscure"! My answer was similar - too obscure to tell, ha. |
| romkey | (reply to Zang) posted 22-Dec-2002 3:26pm I know! Wacky apocalyptic Canadian music I'm a little behind ... a lot behind... on SC these days, so I probably missed your discussion |
| Zang | (reply to romkey) posted 22-Dec-2002 3:36pm Well, I don't read every single comment either. I think you would have to do practically nothing else. I spend enough time on here as it is! Just in case you're interested, here's the one I was talking about: http://surveycentral.org/survey/13940.html I see they've been mentioned other times too: http://surveycentral.org/survey/12173.html http://surveycentral.org/survey/8627.html ...although the first one is me, and the second one is you! |

NOFX, punk...actually, I know quite a few people who know of NOFX, but they are all my friends, so I don't know if others would find them obscure. Dead Prez, a New York Hip-Hop band. Symphony X, Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards, Iron Saviour, Manowar and a bunch of other metal bands. |
| romkey | (reply to Zang) posted 22-Dec-2002 7:01pm in fact, I'm in one of those! |
| Dino | (reply to Biggles) posted 23-Dec-2002 4:44am Yeah, I know the song. It was from the Muppet show (I had the album when I was a kid). I saw Lily Savage doing that before she became famous but she had a fox fur stole around her neck which was a puppet and she did a routine with that. |
| Iseult | posted 23-Dec-2002 9:46am Currently, my favourite group is Anathema. No one that I told that to knows about it. It's doom metal. |

| southernyankee | posted 23-Dec-2002 2:07pm i am just getting into punk. i mean, like real hardcore local band hard type of punk. yes, i know, i know, theres no real defintion of punk. i dont even know any of the names of the bands, but i am pretty sure that they are obsure. also i listen to sonic youth, gang of four, and some other bands. and god knows how many obscure bands i have burend at least one song, even thoug i really dont listen to them. for instance, some very old band, that i think already broke up, they were called government issue. they had this song butt-hole. "i am an butt-hole, look at me, i am an butt-hole, look at me, i think its cool to punch on them, i am an butt-hole, i am an butt-hole, i am was an butt-hole, and now i am dead." |
| confetti | posted 23-Dec-2002 3:44pm There's an amazing band in the U.K. called Muse, but they're rapidly gaining recognition (mostly because Coldplay keeps pimping them all over the place). I'm not much into under-underground...for me, it's worth listening to once it surfaces to at least college radio. I believe the only other I could name is my neighbor's crappy garage band, who shall remain (painfully) obscure for all eternity. |
| confetti | (reply to lily333) posted 23-Dec-2002 3:46pm The White Stripes are not obscure, believe me...overhyped for all they're worth. |
| Iseult | (reply to dora) posted 23-Dec-2002 7:17pm They're really good. They're metal, but they don't cause headaches. |
| dora | (reply to Iseult) posted 23-Dec-2002 7:34pm I'm not a fan of metal, but they sounded pretty right, not too macho if you know what I mean... |
| lily333 | (reply to confetti) posted 23-Dec-2002 11:42pm Well I still like them. They're different. |

| Iseult | (reply to dora) posted 24-Dec-2002 11:29am Yeah... that's exactly what I like about them. They have really melodies in some songs. But from time to time they sound like Sisters of Mercy to me. |

| misskruckow | posted 30-Dec-2002 2:52am Would rap, hip hop, pop, rock, and country be considered obscure? Cuz that's all I listen to these days. I like all kinds of music, as you can see. But I don't think any of it is obscure. Oh well, as if I give a %*#@. |
| juliw | posted 30-Dec-2002 6:13pm My cousin and his friend just released their first CD. They call themselves the Meisner-Haenftling Project. They are not widely known, YET! Their music is really good. One friend said they sounded like The Beatles, and another friend called them a cross between The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith! |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 1-Jan-2003 11:42pm I can't think of any music that I listen to that would be considered "obsure". |
