Which obscure music do you listen to?

By obscure I mean not really known.

By music I mean a group or an artist.

Right now I'm listening to Scott Walker "Sings Jacques Brel". I guess he's pretty obscure. He was popular in the UK in the late sixties and early seventies. He did a lot of covers of Jacques Brel tunes on his regular albums. This one is a compilation that brings them all together. I listen to a lot of obscure music. I always have.

I never know how well known the music I listen to is, because I don't pay any attention to popular culture. It's happened on occasion, I'll buy a tape I heard about through an obscure source, and then find out later that musician is all over the radio. So...... I'm not saying.

The Rednex, a Swedish country/techno group.
"The first bio explained that the band was from USA and that they were found by chance in the isolated, forgotten and severely in-bred village of Brunkeflo City in Idaho, USA. The only valuable gene that had survived in this small genetically massacred community was the gene to play music. They were brought back to Sweden to record an album. This made-up story was sent out as the official biography."

Well "obscure" maybe is not the word but I remember a survey I did about one of my favorite singers,Neko Case, and the reaction was something like "Oh,Neko WHO? Who the fudge is she? Who cares!" * wink *

I also like Ryan Adams (not Bryan),Black 47,the Pogues,The Levellers,The Mollys,Whiskeytown...really I don't consider those artists "obscure",but not known as let's say the Beatles or whatever...

I can't really answer this because I listen to World music. The music and artists I listen to are no doubt fairly well-known, especially to fans of traditional music, in their countries of origin. Fados from Portugal and sambas from Brazil would be a couple examples, done by older artists, some of 'em no longer with us.

I can enjoy music, I just don't get really into it * wry smile * I'd probably get bored just listening to their music, but they have a whole act to go with it impossible to explain.......Do you know that piece of music that goes "manamana, buh der buh der-der" and so on? They did that with the whole group doing the the buh der.... but just one guy doing the manamana - he did that one bit in all different ways. It was really funny, but you probably have to be there to really appreciate it!

At your suggestion, I just put some on right now. I have a collection of French Pop; Brigitte Bardot, Edith Piaf, Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin, Jacques Brel, Michel Sardou and Serge Gainsbourg. Most of it is from the 1960s.

I think you win for most obscure so far. The only one I'm familiar with is Delerium. They're from Vancouver. Although I don't know Bill Leeb personally, we've been hanging in the same social scene for years, and we know a lot of the same people.

You said, "I never know how well known the music I listen to is, because I don't pay any attention to popular culture."

I think that classifies all the music you listen to as "obscure"! My answer was similar - too obscure to tell, ha.

Yeah, I know the song. It was from the Muppet show (I had the album when I was a kid). I saw Lily Savage doing that before she became famous but she had a fox fur stole around her neck which was a puppet and she did a routine with that.

i am just getting into punk. i mean, like real hardcore local band hard type of punk. yes, i know, i know, theres no real defintion of punk. i dont even know any of the names of the bands, but i am pretty sure that they are obsure.

also i listen to sonic youth, gang of four, and some other bands. and god knows how many obscure bands i have burend at least one song, even thoug i really dont listen to them. for instance, some very old band, that i think already broke up, they were called government issue. they had this song butt-hole.

"i am an butt-hole, look at me, i am an butt-hole, look at me, i think its cool to punch on them, i am an butt-hole, i am an butt-hole, i am was an butt-hole, and now i am dead."

There's an amazing band in the U.K. called Muse, but they're rapidly gaining recognition (mostly because Coldplay keeps pimping them all over the place). I'm not much into under-underground...for me, it's worth listening to once it surfaces to at least college radio.

I believe the only other I could name is my neighbor's crappy garage band, who shall remain (painfully) obscure for all eternity.
