I think that NthenSome means an outdoor bathroom with no plumbing, usually a little wooden shed over a hole in the ground... not an outlying building * smile *

No but I have used the next thing to one! I like to hike around a certain large area in my city and sometimes I feel the need to use a bathroom. In the areas I hike around in, there are sometimes porta-potties set up for workmen who are working on houses. If the houses are high enough on the hills involved, they are often not locked -- so if I am hiking up a certain street and see a workers' porta-pottie, it may be unlocked, and I can go in and quickly do my thing and there is no pollution to the neighborhood -- it is contained within a chemical porta-potty. Sometimes in my city, a porta-pottie is available which costs 25 cents. This is fine, except on the lower levels where public toilets exist, sometimes homeless people camp inside, stay for the 20 mins. allowed, then when they have to leave because the door automatically opens after this time, they then simply go back inside -- so legitimate users of this public pay-toilet are outa luck. If I am high enough on a hill, often the porta-potties for the workmen are not locked, so that I can duck inside. Excellent for hikers and tourists!

Yes, I've used one. We have a family reunion at an old church out in the country and the only thing available is an outhouse, unless you want to drive 5 miles into town & go to a fast food joint to use theirs. I usually go before I get to the church though. It's gross and there's always wasps or bees hanging around it.

My grandfather also bought the local racetrack and fixed it up. The bathrooms were all outhouse-like (bench-type with holes in them, partitions to separate you from the person next to you). He fixed it up to be working restrooms.
I'm sure that was an expensive thing to do, but eventually I think he made money on it. It was a good investment and he worked hard on it. How would you like to spend your Saturdays and Sundays at a hot racetrack making sure everything's ready for Sunday nights races?

Yes, when I was small. We lived in a very old house (we were very poor at the time) and there was no indoor plumbing yet. We drank water from the well and used an outhouse. Thankfully, though, we bathed at my grandmother's house about a block away. Later on, when my dad got a better job we installed indoor plumbing, but the outhouse remained. No one used it, and it was taken down a few years later. This was around 1979 or 1980.
