Kings--
Spades: King David
Hearts: Charlemagne
Clubs: Alexander the Great
Diamonds: Julius Caesar

Queens--
Spades: Pallas
Hearts: Judith (book of Judith, an alternative book of the Bible)
Clubs: Argine (an anagram of Regina)
Diamonds: Rachel (from the Bible)

Jacks--
Spades: Hogier the Dane (one of Charlemagne's paladins)
Hearts: 'La Hire' (term for a French warrior) Clubs: Lancelot
Diamonds: Roland of France (or Hector of Troy)
