The first one actually causes suffering so I voted for that one. What a stupid idea! |
Zang | | posted 12-Nov-2002 6:18pm |
Whew! That was easier than I thought it might be. I found that three stood out as being fairly stupid, while the rest I either agreed with, or could at least understand the logic behind.
And the comments, in order of stupidity are:
1. Smoking in public should be banned.
2. People should be required to have a vasectomy or have their tubes tied if they want to receive welfare benefits.
3. [There is] nothing wrong with setting up a state exclusively for Jews, or Catholics or Muslims, or Blacks or Whites.

most diagreebales: Pay male teachers more, we die eventually, a tossup between mandatory welfare vasectomies & prostitution is 'hawt' (by which I presume they mean to be a good thing). There are others I'm not fond of: rape fantasies, banning public smoking (although I might go for banning selling tobacco.) |

The last is really offensive to me.

i mostly disagree with these: the dogs one, the animals are not food, poor people are themselves to blame for their fate, the smoking one, the law should rehabilitate NOT punish, the exclusive jew, catholic, etc state, we die we stop ones. Although i do agree that a good deal of the suffering of the poor in the past and preset is/was because of their own fault or their parent's, a lot of it is society's fault and beyond their control, such as access to poor schooling or being laid off from work, and allthough the law should rehabilate its citizens while they're punishing them, they still need to punish them. they need to do both, and its kind of hard to imagine one w/out the other, but yet if we really had to choose, punishing them should be a higher priority. some of them i sorta have no opinion or mixed feelings. if any of these, i would agree with the hand shaking one, it seems legit. i mean we should still have some rules, but it should be a multiple set of rules instead of just one depending on the situation. for instance, a friendly handshake whould have all that medium five, curl fingers and semi-hug, while a profesionla one should be a firm hand shake, none of that cute stuff. allhtough these rules shoulnt be written in stone and very benable. i also had a few more that i had inteded on answering (on my own survey btw) as some of my unpopular beliefs (specially the pro-death one ) but i never actaully got around to it. BTW: This is the first time that anyone (besides me off course) has ever, in the history of SC, made a survey using a link from one of MY surveys, and not only that, but also they were closly related but yet not just a rip off but an actual spin off with a life and meaning of its own. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I suspect they're far ahead of the UK in that, over here by now. When I was there (1990-1991) they had only just stopped people smoking on buses. Otherwise, it was pretty much a free-for-all. Around here, first they stopped smoking in banks, sometime in the early 1980s. They never allowed it on the bus in my lifetime, although my parents said they used to allow it back in the 1950s or something. It has been gradual, but in the last 20 years they've banned smoking just about everywhere. You can't smoke in bars or restaurants or at work. Basically it has gotten to the point where the only place you can smoke is outside or in your own home. (Provided that you own it, or your landlord lets you.) BTW, that's a nice baton! Can you do that thing where you fling it up in the air, do a cartwheel and then catch it? |

Glad to see my original opinion is winning in the worse stakes. Even I disagree with it. (male primary teachers should get paid more)
But what to do? According to trends if projected forward - there would be no male primary school teachers by the year 2005 (in the UK). Believe me the consequences on society are going to be great. |

I like the sound of all the non-smoking thing! Especially with more and more studies being published about exactly how dangerous passive smoking is. If I were an American ( ) do you think it would be easy to sue the tobacco companies if I got lung cancer as a non-smoker? Baton twirling is for wimps. I just smack smokers around the head with mine |

Yeah, but do you admit that the kind of behaviour Americans show toward smoking is a tiny bit irritating? I don't think non-smokers get often cancer through passive smoking.I guess they inhale a bit,but not enough to have serious damage.I don't smoke but thinking of a life in a place where people isn't free to smoke if they want makes me sad.I'm all for separate rooms for smokers, but those poor people have the right of doing what they want to do. The thing about smoking paranoia is really american. They like prohibition, and see what they did with alcohol prohibition in the 1920's.I guess a lot of young kids now start to smoke because is a cool and "dangerous" experience. If instead they let people smoke the appeal would be less. |

I. Animals are not food II. If it weren't for [cultural norms] most people would probably express their sexuality with both sexes III. Kissing is more intimate and more special than intercourse IV. Legalize grass, acid and other psychedelics for personal use V. Male primary school teachers should be paid more than female primary school teachers VI. People should be required to have a vasectomy or have their tubes tied if they want to receive welfare benefits VII. Prostitution is hawt (hot) VIII. Rape fantasies are ok IX. That for the most part poor people put themselves in the situation they're in X. There should be no rules about shaking hands

There have been a few studies published recently showing that passive smoking is a lot more dangerous than we previously thought. |
| dora | | (reply to Biggles) posted 13-Nov-2002 4:56pm |
I still think they should let them smoke.(surely in restricted areas maybe, and never is someone is uncomfortable, but the approach the US is taking is too extreme for me.) I inhale smoke since I was a child, both of my parent smoke, and I'm perfectly at ease with smokers.I briefly smoked myself but had to quit for health problems who had nothing to do with lungs BTW. My mom only quit when she was pregnant, and I'm still amazed that she could stay without cigarettes for 9 months!! She is a funny smoker, smokes a lot, doesn't inhale a bit,so she is some kind of passive smoker somehow.Last year she had trouble breathing so she went to the doctor and after exams it came out a)that she had pneumonia 2)that her lungs were super-clean. Pretty weird, considering the amount of smoke she does, but if you think she doesn't inhale...Now I don't see the point of not inhaling, but good for her. |

LindaH | | (reply to anonymous) posted 13-Nov-2002 11:08pm |
People seem to think we need all these norms to regulate ourselves. I think if we did away with most norms (not laws) society wouldn't be much different, except we would be a lot less stressed. We would still have the self control not to hurt anyone, but we would lose our fear of offending people and our fear of being judged negatively. |

There are more than three, but making a dog suffer when you could put it to sleep is just cruel. I'm a Born Again Christian so I don't believe that we just stop when we die. I would legalize marijuana, but not psychedelics or acid. I'm afraid that would cause too many crimes just because the person thought something was happening when it really wasn't. |
| Glassa | | (reply to dora) posted 15-Nov-2002 9:44pm |
Why is the belief that poor people put themselves in that position so offensive to you?
I've just seen it so many times. Women constantly having children so they can get more welfare benefits. Then there are those who had a baby too early and resigned themselves to living in poverty and not even trying to better themselves. My mom is like that. She had me when she was 17, she did go to nursing school though. But she's not working a job now even though she could and would be much better off if she did. There are many examples of this. Too many indulgences like cable TV (not a necessity), cell phone (what a pain), beer, cigarettes. The list of wastefulness goes on and on for these people.
The best example is my sister and her husband. They had 2 kids, were under financial hardships as it was, yet still had another baby earlier this year. AND THEY STILL PLAN ON ANOTHER BABY! Yet, as I type this they are claiming bankruptcy because her husband ran up too many credit card bills like a moron, knowing he couldn't pay them.
And don't even get me started on his sister. She's just a huge mooch on all the taxpayers, and yes she put herself in that position. She had her first baby because she wanted to be the one to provide the first grandchild for her parents. Could they pay for it? OF COURSE NOT!
I've worked with people like this too. It's just all around and if you were honest with yourself, you'd see it too. |

What?! Banning public smoking stupid? Should it be ok for someone to go up to another person and throw asbestos or arsenic in their face? I can't tell you how many times I've been to the doctor, allergist, emergency room because some butt-hole blew cigarette smoke in my face. |

| anonymous | | (reply to Brock) posted 19-Nov-2002 5:21pm |
I have rape fantasies. I would not want to be raped in real life, because that would endanger me physically and emotionally. Anyone who would really want to be raped is probably not totally right in the head. But exploring rape *fantasies* is about trust (you have to trust someone a lot to hand over your power to them), getting past boundaries, sexual release - good stuff. You are just wrong that having those fantasies means someone is kuckoo. |

Not sure how to respond. Have different opinions for all. Yes, animal owners should have the option of putting their pet to sleep, ESPECIALLY, if it's in severe pain and the quality of life is gone. Animals are food. What did cavemen eat the most of? Why do humans have canines? For tearing meat! Cultural Norms....what's normal? I don't think "most" people would do it, just would see more threesome I bet. 2 women and 1 man that is. Kissing leads to better intimacy when you finally have intercourse. It gets it all warmed up! Do not legalize drugs. Grass is not safe. Made my ex a lazy loser, good for nothin'. No, not in any equally qualified career should a man get paid more than a woman for just having a dick between his legs. Never thought about vasectaomy or tubes tied for benefits. That could be a great option. I also say give it to people for 2 years (with school assistance, childcare assistance, and free birth control) after that, if you can't make it on your own, too bad. Nowadays, prostitution is just stupid! Rape anything is sick! Serial killers and sex offenders are evil. Smoking is outdoor public is ok. Indoor public smoking should be banned. Suidcide? Not real sure. If it just because of a guy or girl, stupid. If it's because of pysical pain (cancer, etc) then I think it might be ok. Isn't our GOD an all forgiving GOD to his children? Back to the poor. Yes and No. Too many overpaid corporate giants. Too many underpaid hard working legal Americans in the USA. It's greed of many that keep many poor. Law should punish depending on the crime. Sexual offenders, child molestors and murderers CAN NOT be rehabilitated. Who are we fooling? Shaking hands? Dumb survey question! We should all live together. Except for the people that come up with comments like giving Jews, Catholics or Blacks their own state. You ignorant, prejudice asses should be banned to your own island to live. When we die, we stop, sort of, we stop life on earth and live among the dead. See the movie The Others. Changed my point on this subject. |
