I just got my tongue pierced recently and I just have piercing and tattooing on the brain. I am seriously considering a genital piercing, probably a horizontal hood piercing. I am working on a design for my next tattoo. I want some sort of tribal work on my neck on the right side just below my ear, back towards the hairline.

Nope. I have pierced ears, and that is enough for me.

I would not get it done, no. But I admire those who are brave enough!

Oh gosh no. Which brings me very nicely onto the story of what happened to me on Sunday and the guy I met.....

I have no interest in having any part of my body pierced. Although I find certain types of piercings to be unattractive, I'm not frightened or "icked" out by them. In fact, I would rate genital piercing above eyebrow and tongue piercing in terms of aesthetics.

Okay, explain that to me. Am I misguided to think that the purpose of jewelry is to draw attention to, and enhance the appearance of those parts of our bodies which we might consider "our best features"?

I just have a little trouble imagining anyone thinking "I have such an unusually attractive tongue! I think I'll put some jewelry on it so everyone will look at it!"

...or maybe I'm missing something...I've never been much of a jewelry kind of guy. I don't even wear a watch...

Good question.
I cannot speak for others but my reasons were these:
Not everyone has the guts to have needles shoved through their tender bits and then endure the healing process, so it's partly to show my courage in the face of something other people might deem a frightening and unusual ritual. I enjoyed the adrenaline rush afterwards and the entire experience of the procedure from preparation(thinking and deciding to do it) to the actual moment of piercing so very much.
Not everyone would dare to wear such an unusual piercing in the face of the general public on a day to day basis, risking comments and disapproval, so it is partly my need to be a nonconformist. Where I live people don't have many nonstandard body modifications so I do enjoy the shock value of it. The looks on people's faces when they realize my tongue is pierced make me feel good, different from them, special.
I like the way tongue piercings look. I think they are wild and sexy and cool. I love metal. I'd like more, like a tongue sculpture, of sorts. I also love the way it feels(I had one before) and I missed that barbell in my mouth. I toy with it..it clinks around happily.
I love it.
I did it to satisfy an urge. My mind and body craved it...so I did it.
I also crave more tattoos and I will have more of those as well.

It's complex. I hope that helps. It is less about drawing attention to certain body parts as it is the entire ritual of it all and how I feel afterwards. I have no other rituals. It makes me feel I belong to a larger tribe. A tribe of those who dare to do what pleases them and makes them happy even if others disapprove. In a sense I am conforming to a different society altogether than the people I am surrounded by and sometimes feel stifled by on a day to day basis.

I don't understand the attraction. Ok, enhanced nerves - but my nerves are wonderful as they are. And I'm indifferent to piercings - they're not so attractive to me.

I knew a kid in school who claimed he'd had it done. I made the mistake of saying that I thouhgt he was full of it. Thankfully I was quick enough to throw out a "I'll take your word for it!" before he finished unbuckling his belt. Nope, it's no piercings or tattoos for me.

Why? Because like so many things that are alledgedly rebellious, every idiot under the sun is doing them. Leave it to Americans to asert their indidvuality by doing what everybody else is doing. * smile *
