Selectively photographic. Meaning--I can reel off the most general and more specified, interesting and banal, relevant and astoundingly useless facts about pop culture (for example, the person with the world record of plastic surgeries is Cindy Jackson, a.k.a. "The Human Barbie", and she has had 27) after one glance at them. Yet I struggle to remember one single Marxism postulate (?) out of my 9th grade Social Studies book. |

No, and I've never met anyone who has one. Nor have I ever met anyone who claims to have met someone who has one. As a matter of fact, the only time I've ever heard of such a thing is on television and in literature and such. I could be a myth for all I know. If it does exist, it must be extremely rare.
Television actress Marilu Henner claims to have some kind of "total recall" ability; name a date, she can tell you what she did that day. I don't know if it is for real or just a parlor trick. |

no... I think I'm better than some folks at figuring out what my memory fails on or distorts, but it's definitely not photographic |

Yes, I can study my notes for a test and picture where the text is in my notes when I'm taking the test. |

| spidertea | | posted 26-Oct-2002 12:09am |
To a degree. I have a very good visual memory with words. I can scan pages in my mind. But I really don't think I have a genuine "photographic memory." |
| spidertea | | (reply to wolfchik9) posted 26-Oct-2002 12:11am |
That's what I do. I rarely need to study, I just glance throught the book before a test. |

Sorry. What was the question? |
| jekaba | | posted 26-Oct-2002 2:08am |
yes, i do. but not always. it works the best with things that i have written down myself. i write down a lot of (important) stuff and when i need to remember it i close my eyes and picture the piece of paper and then i can read it. |

Generally, but not absolutely. |
| Cain | | posted 26-Oct-2002 9:40am |
Unfortunately not. It would come in massively useful with my studying at the moment. I never forget a face though, which is kind of annoying, there are several faces I would prefer to forget. |

Only with numbers, dates and addresses. |
| Dino | | posted 29-Oct-2002 8:33am |
Yes. I recognise people from my town all the time just seeing them regularly out and about whereas they seem totally oblivious (there could be other reasons). After I've been to places once I'm pretty good with directions and remember directions by visual clues, not names of streets or logical reasoning etc. |
| joachim | | posted 29-Oct-2002 5:36pm |
Nope. |
| joachim | | (reply to jekaba) posted 29-Oct-2002 5:44pm |
That's really fascinating to me because not only do I not have this kind of memory, but I really lack that kind of visual ability in general. I have a very difficult time imagining someone's face, even someone I know well. I recognize them fine, but I can't visualize them when they aren't present. I have had dreams in which I found a book or piece of paper and attempted to read it, but I am never able to do so. The words appear to be out of focus and I can't make them out. So to me the idea of being able to close my eyes and read words as though I was seeing them is amazing. |
| jekaba | | (reply to joachim) posted 29-Oct-2002 5:52pm |
well...as for the dreams...i have an idea. (because that used to happen to me). when you are laying there relaxing before you go to sleep, sorta "tell" yourself that tonight when you dream you will see detail and remember everything when you wake up....well, not exactly THAT, but i think you get the idea. kinda like the trick for remembering things. imagine you have a "little man or guard or something" at the door of your mind. when you want to remember something, "tell" that little man you need the info and to open the door and give him a time frame. i know this sounds waaayyyy kooky, but it can work if you let it. are you a capricorn? if you are, this would make sense to me. tell you why later in case you arent.
ever have a dream where someone gave you ...say... a dime and when you wake up you can feel the dime in your hand, but then you open up your hand and the dime and the feeling disappear? |
| joachim | | (reply to jekaba) posted 29-Oct-2002 6:50pm |
I'm a leo. As for the second question, actually I've only had exactly the opposite - dreams in which I felt something, and then when I woke I realized it was my pillow, or the wall or something like that. Usually when there's something visceral in a dream I can relate it to a real object when I awake. |
| jekaba | | (reply to joachim) posted 29-Oct-2002 6:58pm |
that reminds me of a joke: One night I dreamed I ate a gigantic marshmallow. The next day I woke up and my pillow was gone! corny i know. what you said, though, has also happened to me. sometimes i go for long periods of time without even remembering one single little shred of any dream - i hate that. do you dream in black and white or color? i will be gone for a bit out to dinner. maybe be back later... |
| joachim | | (reply to jekaba) posted 29-Oct-2002 7:04pm |
I dream in color. I think a lot of the problems I have in dreams, when I have them, have to do with the real world also. I had a dream similar to the one I mentioned with the book in which I opened a drawer and couldn't tell what was inside it. I believe this was because my eyes were closed. Well of course they were, I was asleep! It didn't matter until I actively tried to look at something. I had a dream once that I was sitting in a chair and it began to fall backwards and I couldn't right myself. When I woke up I was tangled up in my sheets and had trouble moving my arms. So I guess I think most of my dreams get tied to the real world like those were. |
| jekaba | | (reply to joachim) posted 29-Oct-2002 7:12pm |
yes, sounds like it. supposedly, most people do not dream in color. i do as well. you will be able to see in your dreams but you have to "practice" have that little chat with yourself before you fall asleep. eventually it will work, it did for me. although, sometimes one just isnt ready for the information contained within... ok, now i am leaving. i would love to chat with you more, though, especially in the chat room. i keep going in and out, but no one comes in much. hope we talk again! |
