I'm not dressing up, but I DO like Halloween. Halloween in San Francisco is a TRIP! This city really celebrates it. Especially in the Castro district. It used to be celebrated on Polk St. in earlier days but it has since moved to the Castro -- lots of great drag queens. I may check it out this year, even if it is on a worknight. Last year I strolled on Polk St. with a buddy and there was absolutely nothing going on -- really boring.

I don't know if I'll be wearing one this year. "Vampire" has been a favourite for a good many years. "Sad Clown" or "Blackface" might be amusing.

I'm not planning to dress up. But there's bound to be something on here. Friday night there's a Halloween dinner. Probably there'll be a bop later this week in college. I doubt I'll go - the bop cellar's just a little stuffy underground room.

darkshadowsseeker
(reply to juliw) posted 25-Oct-2002 8:28pm

*laughing out loud* I second that, BAH HUMBUG to Mark. My real problem right now is to figure out how much candy to buy. Mark has lived here for 9 years and has NEVER given out candy to the kids on Halloween. He either turns off all the lights in the front of the house and goes to the back and plays computer games or he goes to his parents for the evening. I have no idea how many kids will come by so I'll probably end up buying too much so I don't run out. He's a bit pissy about me giving out candy on Halloween, but I told him months ago that this is one of my all-time favorite holidays and I loved to see the kids and their costumes. I refuse to hide in the house and ignore the kids. I refuse to sink to Scrooge's level!
juliw
(reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Oct-2002 8:34pm

Get 3 or 4 bags, and make sure you get candy you like, so you can eat what you don't give out.
darkshadowsseeker
(reply to juliw) posted 25-Oct-2002 8:40pm

That's what I plan to do. I was at the store the other day and was pricing candy and Mark said, "let's get the ones that have Almond Joy and Mounds in them because they are my favorite candy". I gave him a LOOK and told him that (1) I was paying for the candy so there is no "let's" involved and (2) He knows I'm allergic to coconut and he didn't honestly believe I was going to buy a type of candy that I couldn't eat, did he? He's well aware of my food allergies, but chooses to remember them when it suits him. Or as my son said the other day, "Can Mark get any more stupid?" I don't know, can he?
juliw
(reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Oct-2002 8:54pm

It sounds like both you and your son have Mark's number! So, get whatever kind YOU want to get. If there is something Mark really doesn't like, but you DO like, that would be perfect!

i can picture you all carving pumpkins...how cute and i know that if we did it, that i'd have more fun also *wink* "i don't wanna grow up, i'm a toys r us kid..."

(i lost the reply from you about sesame street...so i'll just answer you here to the best i can.....so, from what i recall, gordon died in august sometime...and he was in his early 60's...can you even believe it?? he looked really young...i loved gordon as a kid...i remember having somesort of sesame play set and had a little figure of gordon, i would play w/ him the most, and maria too of course....yeah...am sad that he's gone...wonder if they'll replace him or what...am anxious for new episodes to be played, but the ones that are on now aren't that bad...it's funny though, for when i have to realte something that we're doing as far as time goes, i relate it to sesame street...for instance, we were driving home from my folks the other day, and the 6 yr. old said when are we going to be home? and i said an hour..blah blah...she said that that was a really really long time, and i said, no, it's not just think of it as an episode of sesame...so along the way, i told her when journey to ernie started and ended and when elmo would come on etc. she thought that it was fun, and actually, she fell asleep right before elmo would've started...very cute...)
anxious to see pics of halloween!!!*smile* *smile* *smile* *smile*

You don't carve pumpkins? It's tradition in my family. When we were kids, we each got one to carve. My SO didn't do it as a kid, and I thought it was so weird. It's funny how different families do different things.

That's so sad about Gordon.. I'm glad they didn't do a 'death' episode though.. I don't think I want TV teaching her about that yet.. She's two, no worries.

*grin* Imaginations are such cool little things to feed. We have a giant pin oak tree in our front yard. Since the leaves and acorns are starting to fall, they blow into our house and the front door... An acorn hitting the door is as loud or louder than your average knock and Mary is afraid of the sounds. I made up a story about little acorns knocking on our door and coming in to watch TV with us.. She thought that was sooo funny. Now she just tells me the acorns are knocking. *grin*

ya' know...it was tradition in my family as well to carve pumpkins...BUT...as i grew, it grew to be less of a tradition, then when i met my SO, he has like NO traditions and isn't to keen on family stuff...so i really needed to pick and choose the really important family tradtion stuff to keep around and practice, and it seems that halloween is one that is just sort of slipping by...

yeah..it IS so sad that he passed. and i do agree that another death episode would be a bad idea...not only that, but can you even imagine how whiney big bird and baby bear would be over it? i mean, i wanted to strangle that bird when he fell and hurt his ankle while playing basketball!!! seriously though...i think that little kids should learn about such a topic in a more subtle way...such as the leaves dying or whatever...
i LOVE the story you told mary about the acorns!!!! that's really cute and i can picture her giggling over the story and telling you whenever an acorn wants to come in! LOVE it!!!

anywho....you have a beautiful day and enjoy your freshly carved pumpkins and whatever episode of sesame that's on today!!*smile*
