| joachim | posted 23-Oct-2002 5:48pm Toughie. I don't consider myself an interesting person, at least not in a way that lets me easily come up with an answer to this question. I guess the most interesting thing about me is that I always (as in literally, always) combine humor and seriousness in every statement I make. Well, practically literally always. It makes me very difficult to understand, I understand. People are forever trying to decide whether or not to take me seriously when in fact the question doesn't make a lot of sense. |

| Zang | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 25-Oct-2002 4:22pm And I thought that you would be the one person here that I could make that "in" joke to. "Clans Of The Alphane Moon". Lord Running Clam is one of the main characters, a Ganymedean Slime Mold. |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 25-Oct-2002 4:26pm Oh that was quick! Don't you know that caffeine is one of the most important nutrients in your diet? It is particularly important for College students to get enough to help them to remain alert in the morning and to stay up late and study! |

| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 25-Oct-2002 4:34pm Okay, just ignore my previous comments. I shouldn't be pushing drugs on teenagers anyway. Even if it is caffeine... |

| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Zang) posted 26-Oct-2002 5:47am I had indeed imagined Lord Running Clam to be some sort of animated slime mold, but i also went into far more drastic realms of 'in' joke that I will refrain from mentioning further. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Zang) posted 26-Oct-2002 5:52am .. an indulgence I could appreciate too. oh the shamelessness of it all. |
| Cain | (reply to Iseult) posted 26-Oct-2002 9:09am I do like Scotland, but I don't enjoy living here. The weather is crap, everything is expensive and I still take a lot of stick for being english despite the fact I've lived here for almost 10 years. I'm not keen on the British Isles as a whole. I want to go somewhere sunny and warm my bones. |
| magbast | (reply to confetti) posted 26-Oct-2002 9:27am maybe i'm just tired, but i'm definitely starting to see a smudge/distorted pattern in your pictures...tell me to fudge off, it's none of my business...but just don't try to snow me (us) |
| confetti | (reply to magbast) posted 26-Oct-2002 10:33am It is distorted. |
| magbast | (reply to confetti) posted 26-Oct-2002 10:38am damn it, i'm trying to expose you as a fraud...atleast put up a fight |
| Iseult | (reply to Cain) posted 26-Oct-2002 11:08am Well, I'm used to ever crappier weather. People think that Canada is all freezing, but summers are killing. You can't walk down the street because of all the humidity. If you open the door in summer, after the air-conditioned inside, it feels like sauna. Yet winters are crappy too. Too cold. Do many people wear kilts? |
| Cain | (reply to Iseult) posted 26-Oct-2002 11:21am Only on special occasions. It's a tad draughty here for kilts!! At least you get some change though. In the winter it's cold and wet. In the summer it's cold and wet. We get the occasionla day when the weather is glorious, but for 360 days of the year - you guessed it - it's cold and wet. |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 26-Oct-2002 1:45pm Xcmm, r qriemmo qrirdbj otwi pioantliez! |
| Iseult | (reply to Cain) posted 26-Oct-2002 4:01pm Hehehe... I like your description of summer and winter weather. Okay, another kilt question: is it true that you are supposed to wear nothing under it? |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 26-Oct-2002 8:04pm Hmmm, maybe I would need to be drunk to understand that..... |
| Zang | (reply to Biggles) posted 26-Oct-2002 8:33pm |
| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 27-Oct-2002 6:52am Oh my word! My poor head!!! It's the weekend, I wasn't expecting to have to think! I'll come back to this after I've done some work |

| Biggles | (reply to Zang) posted 27-Oct-2002 4:55pm *thinks* |
| Cain | (reply to Iseult) posted 28-Oct-2002 9:23am It is true, although it's become more of a running joke than a long standing tradition now. Someone once said that a sporran (the 'purse' that hangs on the front) was for the tongues of all the men who asked a man if he was a true scotsman. |
| Iseult | (reply to Cain) posted 28-Oct-2002 11:54am I didn't hear about that one. But I heard that harrier the sporran, it is more manly. |
| sonikJ | posted 28-Oct-2002 8:30pm My mechanical inclination and musical talent. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Iseult) posted 29-Oct-2002 4:06am I was in a 16th century scottish clan recreation. Our answer to what was under our kilts was 'leggings' (socks). |
| Cain | (reply to Iseult) posted 30-Oct-2002 6:05am Some of them look like it took an entire sheep to make them so you may well be right. |
| Biggles | posted 30-Oct-2002 6:14am That my arms, legs, backs of knees and back ache right now. And I have a big bruise on my shoulder from carrying the damn boat. And red lines down my fingers too. |

| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 30-Oct-2002 5:12pm boat? |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 30-Oct-2002 6:51pm Think of the Oxford-Cambridge boat race (do they show that in the US?) *That* kind of boat |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 30-Oct-2002 8:42pm I think I saw it once years ago. We have outrigger college teams compete nearby too, in the harbor/river channels but I've never seen it. Neat. How many people per boat? co-ed? wet? |
| magbast | (reply to Biggles) posted 31-Oct-2002 2:41am you just reminded me of an 80's movie called Oxford Blues, stars Rob Lowe, and he rows for Oxford |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 31-Oct-2002 3:55pm 8 rowers in a boat, plus a cox. I'm pretty much in the middle so I don't have to do much manoevering - I do the power thing whn we want to go fast. |
| Biggles | (reply to magbast) posted 31-Oct-2002 3:57pm I've not seen it but I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Not too keen on Rob Lowe though - he was my least favourite actor in The West Wing (but no more!) Seems to be quite a trend for Americans to row here. There are 3 on my team but they're all only here for a term so we'll be short for the rest of the year. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 31-Oct-2002 5:52pm ooh, that does sound wet. Alright, my 1932 dictionary is lacking. What is a 'cox'? a steersman? |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 31-Oct-2002 5:59pm Pretty much - a coxswain. They steer (but steering with a rudder is very limited, mostly it's done through the rowing) and tell the rowers what to do. Rowers aren't supposed to think for themselves - they just do exactly what the cox says. So the cox steers the boat through the rowers by instructing certain rowers on certain sides of the boat to do a certain number of strokes. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 31-Oct-2002 6:37pm So everyone thinks with their cox (who yells 'stroke stroke' or something), those in the middle doesn't have to manoever much, just do the power thing when things speed up, and everyone gets wet. Got it. |
| Biggles | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 31-Oct-2002 9:16pm Hmmm, funny I suppose No-one got wet last time. It'd have to capsize for that to happen. Then we'd just drown since we're fastened to the boat. |
