It varies, but Christmas shopping is probably the biggest ordeal.

I have a helluva time trying to find specific, rare music here. I have better luck going to grimy little vintage record stores than the fancy "buy one Bruce Springsteen CD, get the Avril one free". I went into one of those places trying to buy the Norah Jones album and got laughed out of the store. Those ignorant schmucks thought I was making her up or something.

I also have trouble getting good boots. When they actually fit, and don't make me feel as though if I hit a pebble in the road I'm going to topple over and break my skull, they're made out of cheap-ass near-cardboard material which disintegrates at the first rainstorm. It's really annoying.

Gifts,,,I love to buy gifts, but it takes me forever to decide what to buy, and I often second guess myself after I finally choose something.

Christmas shopping is fun, but such a hassle. I never know what to get for some people. My sister almost always gets money or a gift certificate to a CD store, because I can't decide what to get her.

It depends on the stock, and my mood. But probably gifts for men is the hardest to shop for.

Real;ly? That's trange, the big chains are the only places you can get Norah Jones here. Where do you live?

Costa Rica. I know, it's weird...but unless you're gosh darn Donna Summers or somebody it's hard for them to stock you.

Ya, Christmas is tough. Me and my family are doing things different this year. We are just gonna have appetizers and desserts all day. We have also decided not to do gifts this year, instead we are gonna go away for a weekend. Any suggestions of something fun to do for a weekend would be helpful.

Hey! I love to get gift certificates for gifts. Music rules!! I am hoping to get a membership from emusic.com for my birthday. you can download all the music you want for $20 or $25 a month. Anyway, maybe your sister would like something like that if she has a computer.

I don't have nearly as much problem buying gifts individually for birthdays and such, but when you have to do a whole bunch at once...*wry smile*

Okay, I see now. That makes much more sense than if you were in like, the US and couldn't find Norah Jones in a mainstream kind of store.

Looking for specific plumbing parts is the worst, also cabinet hinges, screws, anchors, any obsure home part.

Clothing:size.Shoes:size. But when I find 'em I find wonderful stuff for a very cheap prize, because NOBODY wants them. They're too small and out of fashion.Shoes are hard to find,my feet are small and I don't like the trendy shoes like platforms...there are expensive shoes of my taste and size, but they are expensive,so usually I buy second hand shoes.Clothes too if I can.

Records, movies, books because there's a lot of non-mainstream stuff I like that they don't sell in shops.

This clothes size problem began in 1979/80 when I had to go to my uncle&aunt wedding. They didn't have ceremony dresses for little babies (and I was very little baby in size and age),so I had to wear a doll dress.

Clothing, getting nice clothes when you're my height is near impossible unless you've a private jet to ferry you around the country and a nice sized bank account.
Although saying that, it is getting better.

Yeah, in the States all the pretentious preppies are playing her because they think it makes them seem cool and "underground", for some reason, and obviously they have her in all the mainstream stores.

SHOES! I have the toughest time finding running shoes that won't result in me getting more blisters underneath my toenails. I've lost 5 toenails because of this, but I love running so I'm not going to stop. I ended up cutting the toe part out of one pair of shoes. That worked pretty well.
But shoes in particular, I just have a hard time finding any that fit me right.

Oh, and bras. I'm almost a cup size smaller on one side, so that makes it quite difficult to find a bra that fits right.
Jemmy
(reply to confetti) posted 20-Oct-2002 7:13pm

Well, I don't know about the US, but here in Halifax, they just basically have everything in the regular big mainstream store. You can't get stuff like Norah Jones in the indie stores. They don't carry it, they only seem to carry classic stuff.

The only thing I really shop for is clothing and I know my sizes so it's not a problem. Why isn't there an option for those who don't have problems with any of these?

Clothes that fit--because I am tall and thin. I am picky about the way they fit and look, so it's hard to find decent jeans. Dress pants aren't a problem. Shirts and sweaters I am picky about too. I also hate shopping at Christmas. My hubby is big on traditions and doing everything the way he was raised... so it's hard to get out of the Christmas crap. I'd rather buy gifts from my heart--like when I see something I think someone would like I just get it and give it to them any time of the year. At Christmas, you just try to think up what to get someone or get whatever you can find.

All you have to do is know what a palette is. Autumn is a palette, Jewel tones are a palette. It doesn't matter what color, it just matters if they are same quality of color. Qualities include things like pastel, gray shades, vibrant, warm earthy, cool earthy, candy, camoflage, deep saturated, etc. One short cut is to wear one gray or earth garment, and another color. But even then it helps to know if your gray, black, white, oyster, earth, whatever, is a 'warm' color (orange-reddish), or 'cool' color (blue-greenish). A 'candy pastel' (like lime-shurbut) won't go with a 'pastel camoflage' like sage; but any candy pastel will go with another, and any camoflage pastel will go with another.
As far as finding clothes, make sure you like color/pattern before you even pull it out to see if it has sleeves.
Hold the garment in front of you and determine what size person it was meant for. I that's not you, forget it.
Close your eyes in the changing room and flash them open them as if glancing/scrutinizing a stranger - who did you see? A teacher, an alpine goat herder, an inept office slut?
Exuberance and self-definition before you even step into the store is key. Know if you are sunday picnic or the vampire queen, then draw that attire into being. If you walk in at a loss, it will show when you walk out too.

Buying gifts: What the heck do you buy for anybody anymore? Everyone has what everyone needs - they either go and buy it, or find a way to get it. Besides, we have too much stuff already.

I'm coming to the same conclusion myself. Perhaps some rethinking of the whole gift thing is in order in this age. Come to think of it, decades ago, christmas gifts were mostly for kids. Perhaps merchandisers screwed up our thinking.
