| confetti | posted 7-Oct-2002 7:49am I've only been to a Wal-Mart about twice in my life (and that was strictly for entertainment purposes). |
| CarolL | posted 7-Oct-2002 7:54am I love WalMart!!! I spent $200 there yesterday. |
| jettles | posted 7-Oct-2002 8:10am never if i can help it but in my city sometimes in the middle of the night when i need a plunger or some other item, it is the only place open in town. otherwise i try to steer clear!!! |
| Iseult | posted 7-Oct-2002 8:16am Yes, from time to time. I just bought bunch of junk food from there. |
| dora | posted 7-Oct-2002 8:17am Never seen a Wal-Mart.I suppose there are similar places,but I hate them. |
| Iseult | (reply to CarolL) posted 7-Oct-2002 8:18am Yeah, they are good. I actually thought they are crap, until I got there (like By-Way). But you can get so many things for lower prices - like house things, and cosmetics, and toys. The thing I'd never buy there is clothes and shoes. |
| Cain | posted 7-Oct-2002 8:29am No Wal-Marts in sunny Dundee unfortunately. Yay for Lidl!! |
| bandit1cat | posted 7-Oct-2002 10:05am I got the idea for this survey the other night while walking through Wal-Mart. They beat out most other competitors for household items, laundry detergent, cosmetics and similar stuff. Their clothes aren't great, but if I need a bunch of household stuff I'll drive the 10 miles down the highway to Wal-Mart. If I need just one or two things it isn't worth the gas. |
| olivekrylon | posted 7-Oct-2002 10:54am i like walmart but the closest one to my house is about an hour away. |
| Enheduanna | posted 7-Oct-2002 11:09am I have ordered a couple of things from their website in the past couple of years, but that's it. |
| romkey | posted 7-Oct-2002 11:39am never. I prefer to support local businesses, even the lame hardware store we go to. |
| teatree | posted 7-Oct-2002 11:41am Never. A new Wal-Mart was built a year ago, but it takes two buses to get there and two to get home, nearly an hour one way. I can get to Target in less than half that time. |
| weepydebacho | posted 7-Oct-2002 12:08pm No Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc. in our town. The closest thing we have is a Sears catalog store where you can order stuff shipped in. We do have a hardware store which my dad shops at a lot. I've never been inside a Wal-Mart. |
| kaleb777 | posted 7-Oct-2002 12:19pm Never. This is one of the few US chains we don't have in Australia. From what I've heard it's probably a good thing. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 7-Oct-2002 12:19pm I have been to the new Wal-Mart exactly once and didn't buy anything. My roommate wanted to get something there and I just went along for the drive. My biggest complaint was that while there was a greeter at the door, when my roomie and I were trying to locate what he wanted we couldn't find a clerk to save our souls! I've never had that problem at K-Mart, Bi-Mart or Target, or for that matter, at any other large store I've shopped at, just Wal-Mart. I don't plan on visiting Wal-Mart anytime soon again as their customer service sucks! |
| joachim | posted 7-Oct-2002 12:36pm I went to one once. I went looking for one once but I went to the right town, wrong state. Plus there was this huge blizzard and they told all the cars to stay off the road but I had to have my Lego set, man! Anyway I didn't find it. |
| bandit1cat | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 7-Oct-2002 1:07pm You are right in that they don't have anyone to help you once you're past the "greeter". Worst is to try to get paint mixed. Takes 20 minutes on average to find anyone to help you. I don't buy paint there anymore. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 7-Oct-2002 1:21pm I don't blame you. You'd probably have better luck going to someplace like a True Value hardware store or the like. I've always gotten better service at places like this. They may be smaller than Wal-Mart, but they try harder to please the customer than Wal-Mart does. What a sham those Wal-Mart commercials are. It gives you the impression that there are clerks everywhere, but you and I know that isn't true. Just to brighten your day I'll tell you a funny incident concerning Springfield's new Wal-Mart. About a month after it opened we had a bad windstorm here and there were massive power outages over much of Eugene and Springfield. This happened in February, 2002. Well, the power went out at Wal-Mart and the customers started stealing stuff right and left, some wheeling cartloads of stuff out to their cars. There was only one security guard and as usual, hardly any clerks so a lot of people got away with a lot of stuff. My son and his friends were driving by Wal-Mart and saw this happening and later that evening ran into an acquaintance that had been in the store when the power went off. He said the store didn't even have a back-up genny so the security systems and cameras didn't work, so they have no way of catching all these people. There weren't enough employees on hand to catch all the thieves. |
| bandit1cat | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 7-Oct-2002 1:52pm Ha. And, if you know Wal-Mart security procedures, their security officer(s) are not allowed to accost or physically subdue a perpetrator. They could get sued otherwise. All they can do is ask the person to give up. |
| they | posted 7-Oct-2002 2:00pm Tough to say.. I hardly ever go there but, my mom works there and picks things up for me all the time. So, if that counts, a few times a month. If it doesn't, a few times a year. |
| msgman | posted 7-Oct-2002 2:00pm It depends a bit on what you mean by "Wal-Mart". In the UK, the Asda supermarket chain is owned by Wal-Mart, and some of the larger stores (the ones that sell a lot of non-food items) are co-branded as Asda Wal-Mart, but the smaller ones are just plain Asda. The one nearest to me is an Asda Wal-Mart, and I shop there occasionally for clothes. |
| spidertea | posted 7-Oct-2002 5:03pm I prefer Target, but if I need something in the middle of the night I'll go to Wal-Mart. |
| Matt | posted 7-Oct-2002 5:33pm Not too often cause it drives me crazy, there are always people cutting you off and the parking lot is packed with idiots! |
| juliw | posted 7-Oct-2002 5:35pm Once in a while. It has been about a year and a half since I went to Wal-Mart, but when I went that time, I had just been there a few days before. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 7-Oct-2002 7:51pm I didn't know that. That makes the situation much more funny! I can just see the security guard begging these looters to please stop stealing from the store while he stands there looking all ineffectual! |
| mandy | posted 7-Oct-2002 7:58pm *screams* ICKY!!!!!!!!! |
| Bibliophile | posted 7-Oct-2002 8:27pm Probably a couple of times a year. There isn't one close to where I live right now, and I don't like them much anyway. They have cheap film developing though. |
| Galomorro | posted 7-Oct-2002 8:40pm Never; I do not have a Wal-Mart to shop at. There is no such store in my neighborhood. I do not drive, and would not go out of my way on public transportation just so I could go to a Wal-Mart, wherever one might be in my city, county or state. Besides, I have little money to shop; when I go to a drugstore I go to one called "Walgreens" which locations are numerous in my city. |
| Glassa | posted 7-Oct-2002 9:32pm I go probably once a week. I don't have a grudge against Wal-Mart because they're the world's largest corporation. They provide jobs for millions of people. The owners also donate millions of dollars to the University I work at. Don't ever let anyone tell you that a rich person is a selfish greedy person. I see the opposite of that everyday while I take care of donations to the school I work for. It's just another liberal socialist lie. |
| Glassa | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 7-Oct-2002 9:41pm Geez, remind me what town you live in so I never go there. That's an awful story. Sounds like the whole town is full of degenerates. I feel sorry for the local owner/manager of that store. What a huge loss. And to wimp down the security like that, that's just wrong. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to Glassa) posted 7-Oct-2002 10:10pm I wouldn't go so far as to say my town is full of degenerates. This could happen to any town at any store during a power outage because wherever you go there will always be people taking advantage of a situation. It's happened in other towns besides where I live, in fact it happened on and after Sept. 11, 2001 when people were claiming they were in the WTC when it was attacked, some were saying they had lost relatives and family members in the WTC attack when they hadn't. What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter where you live in this world because there is a good chance that if a situation came up such as a power outage or there was some type of disaster, people will lie, they will steal for monetary or material gain. It's even happened after hurricanes in Florida with people looting homes that were abandoned as their owners sought shelter from the storm. This actually happened after Hurrican Andrew. |
| lily333 | posted 7-Oct-2002 10:30pm About every other week. |
| bcollins | posted 7-Oct-2002 11:06pm There isn't a Wal-Mart where I live. There is one in the next town over which is around 40 miles away, but why would I go there when we have K-Mart and Target in my town and they are only a few miles away. |
| mikehunt696 | posted 7-Oct-2002 11:15pm No Wal-Mart in Beaverton. It's too much of a pain to take the bus or the Maxx into Portland to go to Wal-Mart. I'll stick with K-Mart. |
| Zang | posted 8-Oct-2002 12:06am I think I've been in a Wal-Mart store three times in my life. I have purchased something there once. So, depending on whether "shopping" is defined as entering the store or purchasing something there, I either shop there once every 13 or 40 years. |
| bandit1cat | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 8-Oct-2002 1:22pm Exactly. I know this because I read about Wal-Mart (I call it "Wally's") being sued for a security guard grabbing and physically holding them until police arrived. My son used to work for Walgreen's. He said the same kind of thing. Stores cannot accost you, or subdue you if they 'suspect' you of shoplifting. If they do and you weren't doing anything wrong you can sue their ass off. So, all you shoplifters, don't fret so much. Just make sure you beat it out of the store before they call the cops to come. You're stuck if that happens. Oh, another tidbit of information. Wally's and other stores have all those "black balls" hanging from the ceiling to watch shoppers on video cameras. Only 1 in 5 is actually "real". The others are fake, and put up to make you feel you're being watched. I would think the real ones would be in ladies' cosmetics where teenage girls would be pocketing stuff, and maybe the electronic section. Like, who would be watching the pet food aisle to make sure you weren't snatching a can of cat food? |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 8-Oct-2002 1:45pm They have extra security at Fred Meyer's near the meat counter. Especially where the nicer cuts of steak and the roasts are. |
| bandit1cat | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 8-Oct-2002 2:31pm Ha. Never heard of anyone trying to heist a cut of meat from a grocery store. That's a good one. Only thing locked up and watched here are cigarettes. At $5.00 a pack I can see why. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 8-Oct-2002 11:32pm It can be a real problem around here, especially with the high rate of unemployment. Sometimes people get desperate. |
| Cleo | posted 9-Oct-2002 1:29am At least once a week. I buy a lot of birdy food for my wild yellow finches & blue jays. I WISH it were 24 hours!!! |
| Cleo | (reply to CarolL) posted 9-Oct-2002 1:34am So do I!!!! I Love Walmart!!! I wish ours was 24 hours. Is your's 24 hours? Hawaii's Walmart is 24 hours. BTW I spent just a little bit more than you did yesterday. I purchased a little TV/VCR, a CD radio/cassette player, the movie "Monsters Inc." & a thingy of white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies. What did you buy? Just curious...... |
| Cleo | (reply to weepydebacho) posted 9-Oct-2002 1:43am I used to love shopping by catalog for Sears years ago. How much is their catalog now? Geeze! You must live in the middle of nowhere. |
| Cleo | (reply to spidertea) posted 9-Oct-2002 1:44am Is your WALMART 24 hours?? |
| CarolL | (reply to Cleo) posted 9-Oct-2002 8:34am Let's see... A jacket for my older son (winter's coming), household stuff like new ironing board cover, plastic wrap, tin foil, a tie out for our new dog, socks, dog chew toy (so, hopefully, he won't chew any more of my shoes), lots of little stuff -- I can't remember it all now. Oh, and another $300 on a new pair of glasses since I lost mine 3 months ago. I won $1500 at bingo so I could finally afford to buy new ones. |
| bandit1cat | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 9-Oct-2002 12:21pm I guess you gotta eat. I can see pocketing small stuff from store shelves but not actual cuts of meat. The other option is to walk through the store, eat stuff as you go, then leave. |
| Maarten | posted 9-Oct-2002 2:25pm No Wal-Marts here. Have been to one in the States though. |
| spidertea | (reply to Cleo) posted 9-Oct-2002 3:45pm yeap |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 9-Oct-2002 4:36pm Or do as Bluto did in Animal House. Remember him sucking Jello off a plate and stuffing entire burgers in his mouth? |
| bandit1cat | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 9-Oct-2002 5:26pm Yeah, I remember. In the past I've been guilty of eating donuts and stuff in grocery stores. Sometimes eat part of a bag of something, then put it back. My favorite thing used to be macadamia nuts. Open up the bottle, pour them into my pants pocket then put the bottle back. Too expensive to buy. |
| bandit1cat | (reply to Cleo) posted 9-Oct-2002 5:31pm Where you been? Sears hasn't had a big catalog for quite a while now. Only JC Penney, which is much better than Sears. I hate frickin Sears except for their Craftsman tools, which I now can get in town at the local hardware store Sears teamed up with. Means I never actually have to set foot in a Sears again. |

| weepydebacho | (reply to Cleo) posted 10-Oct-2002 4:18am I live in a small town in Iowa called Onawa. We have less than 3,000 people. I don't know how much the Sears catalogs are because there isn't one in the house. My mom or dad usually go to the catalog store, go through the catalog and submit their order there. We used to have a Montgomery Ward catalog store as well, but they are gone. |
| kirst | posted 10-Oct-2002 7:43am It varies. If I'm in Hong Kong, I don't shop at Wal-Mart because we don't have one. In Georgia, probably once a week. It's a big thrill actually, but we live in the boonies. If we had a Target nearby, I wouldn't go to Wal-Mart. As it is, Wal-Mart is a 45-minute drive each way. |
