I don't have an average number, I have the average number. |
| msgman | | posted 29-Sep-2002 2:41pm |
Actually, no-one has the average number of legs, not when the average in question is the arithmetic mean That's because... ...most people have four arms and legs (two of each) ...no-one has more than four ...some people have fewer (they have one or more missing) ... therefore, the average is somewhere lower than four (it's probably something like 3.99999, or thereabouts) ... and therefore anyone with four arms and legs has more than the average! (If the average in question is the mode or median, then the average is 4 and that's what most people have. But the explanation specifically refers to the mean. |

No-one? What about circus freaks? It's pretty rare, but you have to take it in account, right?
|
| dora |
I don't mean to be offensive, but did you miss a leg or an arm before? |
| msgman | | (reply to dora) posted 29-Sep-2002 2:55pm |
Unless they've had extra limbs surgically inserted, it's impossible to have more than two arms and two legs. Some people do have extra items of smaller appendages (such as toes, fingers and, er, penises), but additional large limbs just don't happen. |

Iseult | | posted 29-Sep-2002 6:46pm |
Uhm, you never mentioned what is the average number of legs and arms. But I guess it is four... or is it? |
Zang | | posted 29-Sep-2002 8:40pm |
Two of each. I think that's pretty average. |
jettles | | posted 29-Sep-2002 9:51pm |

Across all chordates, or just homo sapiens? |
| msgman | | (reply to Iseult) posted 30-Sep-2002 1:12pm |
No, it's slightly less than four. See my earlier comment. |
TeddyMiller | | posted 30-Sep-2002 2:17pm |
There are more one-armed or one-legged people than three-armed or three-legged ones, so the average would be a little below two arms and two legs per person. With two of each, I'm above average.

Umm...I think I have an average number of arms and legs. I mean, last time I checked I had 2 arms and 2 legs. That's average, right? |
| Lex |
I have the modal number of legs I have the median number of legs I have the slightly greater than the mean number of legs |
| southernyankee | | (reply to msgman) posted 1-Oct-2002 9:46pm |
does this count their individual or cumilivtive totals.
For instance hypotectily, if I had four hands and no legs, or 4 legs and no hands, that would still put me under option one, right?? |
| Bibliophile |
I think I probably have more than the average number of arms and legs for a human being since I have seen only people with 4 or fewer total arms and legs. Thus, I imagine the average is slightly less than 4 & I have 4. |
| Cleo |
Um....... yeah! For a human being. |
