| LindaH | posted 23-Sep-2002 6:41pm I think it's slower in general. What i'd like to see is less surveys, more comments. People aren't too interested in discussing things in much depth. They want novelty. I think that's sad. |
| Iseult | posted 23-Sep-2002 7:34pm I suppose so. Just look at things currently created. |
| Zang | posted 23-Sep-2002 7:48pm I have another theory... |
| cody | posted 23-Sep-2002 7:57pm Why yes, I did notice, hence creating this survey. |
| cody | (reply to Zang) posted 23-Sep-2002 7:58pm What would that be? |
| Galomorro | posted 23-Sep-2002 8:06pm Yes. It's hard to pick something that hasn't already been done. I have to hand it to those people that are able to pick new and different ones that no one's done yet. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 23-Sep-2002 8:14pm I think that there has been a glut of bad new surveys lately, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that we are running out of ideas. Most of the bad surveys have been done by new users who haven't taken the time to read some good surveys and see how they are properly done and I feel that many have not botherd to read the "Tips for making good surveys" because we are still getting people saying it's for work or school, we are still getting surveys about the U.S. only when the "tips" section tells you to be aware of the different types of people at SC. I think these issues are more of a problem than a lack of new survey ideas. I would rather have fewer new decently done surveys then having a whole slew of bad ones. I get the feeling that some people come to the site, don't read and vote on any of the surveys and start creating one bad survey after the other and get pissy when we point out problems with the survey (a good example would be a recent survey asking how we wanted our steak done). When we pointed out the problems with the survey, the survey creator got rather hostile with us and ended up having the survey HF. It would have taken only a few minor tweaks to fix the survey, but the sc was unwilling to do so and lost out on doing a survey. |
| LindaH | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 23-Sep-2002 8:17pm I'm waiting for one "I'm doing a market research survey about US products for my business class" No, not really |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to LindaH) posted 23-Sep-2002 8:20pm |
| Zang | (reply to cody) posted 23-Sep-2002 8:27pm I'd rather not go into it in detail. Suffice it to say that there are a LOT more surveys going into qualification than there are coming out. If you read the other comments above, I think you'll get the idea... |
| LindaH | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 23-Sep-2002 8:30pm Yeah, I'm kidding. I'm waiting for one like that, only full of typos and grammatical errors, and an option "This survay sux and u sux 2" |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to LindaH) posted 23-Sep-2002 9:05pm |
| LindaH | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 23-Sep-2002 9:14pm I'm half tempted to make one, just to see how long it lasts before HF death. But I won't. |
| LindaH | (reply to Zang) posted 23-Sep-2002 9:19pm I had a feeling it had something to do with qualification. I kind of got the idea that the reason you made all those crazy surveys to have fun with qualification is because people can be so serious with it. |
| teatree | posted 23-Sep-2002 9:20pm I hadn't noticed or really thought about it, but I haven't really been here all that long (less than a year) either. |
| cody | (reply to Zang) posted 23-Sep-2002 9:28pm Hmm. I have been avoiding Qual. for a while... and I'm much happier for that being the case |
| mikehunt696 | posted 23-Sep-2002 9:35pm I'm pretty new here so I haven't probably noticed. I still have a lot of older active surveys to answer when I get around to it. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to LindaH) posted 23-Sep-2002 9:45pm |
| BrightBlue | posted 23-Sep-2002 10:36pm Yes, quite. And less original too. I thought about this kind of thing when I first joined this site. There must be a point when the collective consciousness runs out of original thought. Then no more SC. |
| confetti | posted 23-Sep-2002 11:09pm Yeah, it's very funny. Mine, especially, keep getting reworded and recycled |
| Maarten | posted 24-Sep-2002 6:49am Yes, I noticed that about a year ago. |
| dora | posted 24-Sep-2002 7:06am No.I personally don't.If you don't like my surveys is your problem not mine. |
| Dino | posted 24-Sep-2002 7:26am It crosses my mind every now and then - then suddenly I'll be surprised at a sudden influx of good surveys. |
| Irene007 | posted 24-Sep-2002 7:42am I noticed that a while back... We need new blood! Maybe SC should advertise? |
| Irene007 | (reply to Galomorro) posted 24-Sep-2002 7:47am That's true! Maybe some surveys should come back - like; What did you do to help you quit smoking? I was referred to an old survey when I tried to create it - I didn't feel like reading an inactive survey, so I dropped the whole thing and suffered in peace. |
| grmbrand | posted 24-Sep-2002 8:22am I think the qual process in general staunches the flow of new surveys. I'm not exactly complaining, either. |
| Biggles | posted 24-Sep-2002 9:54am There are always fewer surveys at this time of year. It'll pick up again over the next month. |
| Cain | posted 24-Sep-2002 10:31am Yes. I'm very glad somebody else has mentioned it and I think this is probably the best question to come along in a while. Not that it's anybody's fault. Inevitably the ideas will dry up. |
| LindaH | posted 24-Sep-2002 11:17am Maybe we should have a creativity exersize: Everyone go out in your day to day activities and be more aware of questions that come up and that would make good surveys. |
| southernyankee | posted 24-Sep-2002 3:16pm I am "relatively" new, so I can't tell you for sure. I haven't noticed any difference between then and now. I have a ton of ideas that are just waiting dormant, that I am shocked no one has yet tried them. For some reason, every time I post one of my "new ideas" as opposed to "some over-done bullcrap" that everyone else has done, the new ideas generally get lower ratings. Thus because of this, I try not to be as rating-driven as the average person on here. My theroy isn't that we're out of ideas, its because of what we value as a good survey. I mean, if you have people giving "good" for every obvious bullcrap survey that has been done a million of times before, and then the new idea is barely struggeling to get an above 50, then yeah, what the fudge do you expect. And then these people wonder why there's no original surveys. |
| southernyankee | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 24-Sep-2002 3:20pm I still don't get it though, what is wrong with making surveys for school? |
| juliw | posted 24-Sep-2002 6:37pm Nope. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to southernyankee) posted 24-Sep-2002 8:00pm I don't personally have a problem with doing work/school surveys, but there are some here (who shall remain nameless) who totally object to them and will HF them right off the bat. That's why I asked bill to put in the little paragraph in the section on tips for creating surveys NOT to say it's for work or school. Sadly, some newbies don't bother to read it and mention it in their explanation. I try to warn them if I spot it so the survey doesn't get HF. |
| Galomorro | (reply to Irene007) posted 24-Sep-2002 8:22pm Yes, I think some surveys should come back. Why not let all the newer folks answer now? I did the same thing you did -- I was referred to an older survey when I recently tried to create one, and I didn't feel like taking the time to reading an inactive survey then, so I deleted my survey-to-be. |
| weepydebacho | posted 25-Sep-2002 1:12am To new people like me it seems that there are lots of surveys. |
| Zang | (reply to LindaH) posted 25-Sep-2002 3:39am I was originally going to see how long I could keep them in qualification, but there's a whole mob of people with their fingers on the "HF" button. I was laughing my head off just trying to keep up with them. I would no sooner make a change, and there would be a couple of "HF"s up there already. |
| Zang | (reply to cody) posted 25-Sep-2002 3:41am I do it everytime I'm here. Mostly out of a sense of duty, but I kind of have fun with it too! |
| Irene007 | (reply to Galomorro) posted 25-Sep-2002 7:27am So, what's going to be done about it? |
| LindaH | (reply to Zang) posted 25-Sep-2002 11:14am I kind of figured that out when you started making suggested changes and thanking people who suggested them. I started making compliments and suggestions in the car survey in hopes it would slow down the HFs and it worked. Unless it was a coincidence. |
| Zang | (reply to LindaH) posted 25-Sep-2002 11:26am I made another cheeky survey this morning. I don't know if anyone else will find it amusing, but it sure cracked me up! |
| kaleb777 | posted 25-Sep-2002 5:05pm Yes. Maybe people should do more surveys about news events in their local area to see what people around the world think. |
| kaleb777 | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Sep-2002 5:07pm What's happened to that butt-hole? Did any of their surveys get through so we could find out who they were? |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to kaleb777) posted 25-Sep-2002 9:23pm If you are referring to the "how do we want our steak" one, it was hunnybunnybaby that did that one. |
| LindaH | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Sep-2002 9:31pm I'm half tempted to make a survey "How do you want your mistakes done?" But I won't |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to LindaH) posted 25-Sep-2002 9:52pm It sounds like you are easily tempted! |
| LindaH | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Sep-2002 10:39pm Only half tempted though. |
| kaleb777 | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Sep-2002 10:47pm Is that the one that said stuff like "fudge you kaleb" in qual? |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to LindaH) posted 25-Sep-2002 10:54pm |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to kaleb777) posted 25-Sep-2002 10:57pm Not that I recall. She (?) did make a comment somewhat like, "if you dont eat steak then dont answer the fudging survey" or something like that. All we were asking her to do was correct the spelling of "Welcome" (she had spelled it with 2 "l's") and put in options for those who don't eat meat and she copped an attitude at us. We had no choice but to kill the survey. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to Zang) posted 25-Sep-2002 10:59pm Admit it...you enjoy being a naughty boi! |
| Galomorro | (reply to Irene007) posted 25-Sep-2002 11:02pm Well, I guess that's not up to me. Maybe if the main survey-masters read this, they might consider accepting duplicate surveys sooner than the usual time they allow for it? |
| kaleb777 | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Sep-2002 11:07pm Yeah. She(he) had a few surveys going in qual at once. She was the one who failed to see that it was important that surveys made sense grammatically. I find it amazing how some people start off with so much antagonism right from the get go. It's like they come here to unload their hatred. |
| LindaH | posted 25-Sep-2002 11:12pm I wanted it to go to fix-me so I could turn all the 'steaks' into 'mistakes' |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to kaleb777) posted 25-Sep-2002 11:13pm I've read some of her comments. I think she/he is probably just an immature kid that thinks they know everything. |
| kaleb777 | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 25-Sep-2002 11:18pm Has she gone? |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to kaleb777) posted 26-Sep-2002 12:00am I don't know. The "steak" survey was just last week. One can only hope. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to LindaH) posted 26-Sep-2002 12:01am |
| Zang | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 26-Sep-2002 12:59pm I can't help myself! You keep setting yourself up. (A person's height is measured in half inches, but no one should be expected to estimate approximately how many books or video tapes they own...) WHOOPS!!! Did I say that?!! |
| romkey | (reply to Zang) posted 26-Sep-2002 2:07pm perhaps we should have asked how tall our stacks of movies are, in inches... |
| southernyankee | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 26-Sep-2002 5:19pm yeah, my first survey here that I did was for an essay. A bunch of people gave it a Needs work, so I deleted the comment. If I ever see someone mentioning a school project, I'd warn them so they not only not get any HF, but then even if it passes, some butt-holes will give it a bad rating so that very same stupid reason. Unforunatly for those people, I hardly ever spend any time in qual, so if there ever is a mention of a shool project, it has already passed qual, and its too late then. I gotta tell you, some people here are real narks when it comes to these things. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to Zang) posted 26-Sep-2002 9:18pm Waaaaaaaaah!!! Zang's picking on me! |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to southernyankee) posted 26-Sep-2002 9:19pm I know what you mean. |
| Irene007 | (reply to Galomorro) posted 26-Sep-2002 10:03pm Well, I hope so... |
| Zang | (reply to romkey) posted 27-Sep-2002 12:44pm Half-inches!!! |
| Zang | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 27-Sep-2002 12:45pm *smooch* |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to Zang) posted 27-Sep-2002 3:30pm Arrrrrrrrrrrgh!!! Dog germs, dog germs! |
| monica_potter | posted 4-Oct-2002 5:04am Uh huh. Have you seen the surveys: "How many fingers do you have?" Definitely. Try to think up new ideas. |
