| Cain | posted 18-Sep-2002 9:57am Baralis. Can't rembmer what book he was in or who wrote it but he was a fantastic character. Unfortunately he was the bad guy so of course he's killed at the end. If I ever write a book my bad guy is going to be the one who comes out on top. |

| dora | posted 19-Sep-2002 6:00pm Oh,so many,so many... I would date Amory Blaine even if he's so full of himself. I would fancy Julien Sorel, even if he's an hypocrite until the very end. I would respect Athos very much even if he hates women. I would have a great fun with Jo March and talk about art with Amy March. Me and Hamlet will just stare at the wall in depression. Etienne Lantier, young socialist and miner,I would dine with him and flirt. Morgana, how she is portrayed in Marion Zimmer Bradley books would make a great best friend... Okay I stop now,or I'll run out of virtual ink. |

| weepydebacho | (reply to mandy) posted 26-Sep-2002 2:48am Hey, we have the same answer. |
| mandy | (reply to weepydebacho) posted 26-Sep-2002 7:11pm The book is fabulous too. If you haven't read it, I really would advise you to. It's amazing! |
| weepydebacho | (reply to mandy) posted 26-Sep-2002 9:31pm Not only have I read the book, but I've seen the movie many times. That's where I took my user name from. |
| joachim | (reply to weepydebacho) posted 27-Sep-2002 5:29pm But would you actually want to meet him? He'd be near the bottom of my list (especially pre-treatment), down there with Captain Hook and Darth Vader. |
| weepydebacho | (reply to joachim) posted 27-Sep-2002 11:18pm I don't know why exactly, but Alex has a certain charm when he wasn't getting all ultra-violent. |
| pepperdrinks | posted 28-Sep-2002 1:30am John the Savage, from Brave New World... articulate, passionate....and totally sexy (in my mind anyway) |
| mandy | (reply to joachim) posted 28-Sep-2002 3:08pm I certainly would. ESPECIALLY pre treatment. To me, he represents the real natural human ~Alpha~ male. Society nowadays needs us to be clockwork/mechanical animals for things to run smoothly. Like romkey said recently in the survey about finding out you are a robot, to some extent we all are robots. Embracing our real natural human natures is not encouraged. From the time we are small we are taught that our urges to bite others and our belief that everything is "Mine!" and our refusal to do things the grown ups want us to do, "NO!", is literally punished out of us. I do not agree that it is ok for us to behave the way Alex and his droogs behaved. I am just fascinated and astounded by humans, be they book characters or real life folk, who buck the "new norm" and embrace their true animal nature. oh and yeah..violence secretly turns me on... |

| joachim | (reply to mandy) posted 30-Sep-2002 12:27pm I was a little disturbed to find myself getting aroused during that sex scene. I don't have a lot of respect for people who won't watch the movie because of that scene, though. I think it was a very brave thing to put on film and it strengthens the viewer to see it, and think about it. But I still wouldn't want to meet Alex. I read the book recently and I didn't think it was that good. |
| mandy | (reply to joachim) posted 30-Sep-2002 6:34pm I have actually had people online accuse me of being insensitive to the victims of violent crimes because I enjoy that movie. I also had a woman in a chatroom comment once that I must have never in my entire life have ever experienced violence or suffered at the hands of someone violent if I enjoy watching that kind of film. I agree with your statement about strengthening the viewer. When I met Sue she was easily disturbed by violent scenes and even the sound of someone on screen suffering would send her off hiding in another room. We talked at length about this and she started "trying" to understand what I got out of watching disturbing images. She tried hard and actually "got it". So many people have a knee jerk reaction and just don't want to go there. I found her willingness to expand herself refreshing. |
| joachim | (reply to mandy) posted 3-Oct-2002 5:31pm Interesting and, I think, good for her. I do sometimes wonder whether I'm desensitizing myself, though. I believe it is possible. But when I see a bad thing happen in real life, I am still moved by it, so I guess I believe I'm able to distinguish between real suffering and unreal suffering. I hope. |
