| darkshadowsseeker | posted 2-Sep-2002 2:05am According to this site Hans Lippershey was given credit for inventing the telescope. http://www.ee.umd.edu/~taylor/optics3.htm |
| bandit1cat | posted 2-Sep-2002 2:42am Ha. Didn't Fernando Lamas create Corinthian leather or something? Richardo Ramirez, is actually Richard Ramirez, the serial killer, otherwise known as the Night Stalker. |
| teatree | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 2-Sep-2002 3:40am No, Fernando Lamas didn't create Corinthian leather, but Ricardo Montalban used to do car commercials extolling the fact that the car he was doing the commercial for had Corinithian leather. However, Fernando Lamas was one of Esther Williams' husbands. |
| Zang | posted 2-Sep-2002 3:44am There is some controversy. Some say Galileo Galilei others say Hans Lippershey. Johannes Kepler and James Metius also seem to have some supporters. |
| Zang | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 2-Sep-2002 3:53am -Richardo Ramirez is a pro baseball player. -Francisco Da Gama, the grandson of the explorer, was the Viceroy of Goa. -Juan Bautista was a Mexican explorer. -Harry Vardon is a pro golfer. -Fernando Lamas is an Argentinian born television actor. |
| bandit1cat | (reply to Zang) posted 2-Sep-2002 4:07am Okay, maybe Richardo Ramirez is a pro baseball player, but I made this up adding the "o" to the Night Stalker's name. Who the hell pays attention to baseball anyway to know who even plays it? BBBBBOOOORRRRRRIIIIIINNNNNGGGG. Watching the grass grow is more exciting. Okay, Ricardo Montalban. The Chrysler Cordoba. Now, who is Lelannd Blackwell? |

| confetti | posted 2-Sep-2002 7:56am Galileo. |
| Iseult | posted 2-Sep-2002 8:48am I think it's Fernando Lamas. I don't think it's Galilei and I'm sure it's not Da Vinci. |
| anoddoblivion | posted 2-Sep-2002 10:19am I know that Galileo was a famous astronomer, but I don't think he invented the telescope. Maybe...Juan Bautista? |
| dora | posted 2-Sep-2002 12:23pm A dutch guy.Don't know his name. But usually they say it was Galileo.I picked other because I don't see dutch sounding names and I don't even know the name of that guy, just that he invented the telescope and Galileo just took the credit |
| dora | (reply to Maarten) posted 2-Sep-2002 12:24pm Hey,give credit to your countryman!! |
| dora | posted 2-Sep-2002 12:26pm Right now only me and kate seem to know the real answer..."other"...only the before checking I had written "it was not Leonardo...but he took the credit..." That's because Leonardo invented/discovered so many things that is easy to put his name everywhere! |
| juliw | posted 2-Sep-2002 12:34pm I don't know |
| Maarten | (reply to dora) posted 2-Sep-2002 1:06pm I think you mean Antony van Leeuwenhoek. He invented the microscope, not telescope. |
| dora | (reply to Maarten) posted 2-Sep-2002 1:38pm No,somebody else.Hans Lippershey. |
| Maarten | (reply to dora) posted 2-Sep-2002 2:33pm Hold on, you're right! This is what I found: "De eerste grove telescoop werd in 1608 door de Nederlandse brillenmaker Hans Lippershey ontwikkeld. De telescoop vergrootte voorwerpen maar een paar keer. De eerste echte astronomische telescoop werd in 1609 gebouwd door Galileo Galilei." It says that Lippershey made the first telescoop in 1608 and it enlarged only a few times. In 1609 Gallilei made a real astronomical one and it enlarged 30x. |
| Biggles | posted 2-Sep-2002 6:56pm Of these, I'd say Galileo. But that was just a particular type of telescope I thought. I believe the first telescopes were invented in the far East long before the European Renaissance. I chose other. |
| Zang | (reply to bandit1cat) posted 3-Sep-2002 3:19pm If there ever was such a person, he never reached the heights of fame that the others on the list did. |
| Jemmy | posted 4-Sep-2002 4:53pm Galileo Galilei? |
| sonikJ | posted 29-Sep-2002 4:53pm I thought it was Copernicus. |
| joachim | posted 3-Oct-2002 7:43pm Galileo was the first to use it for astronomy, as I understand it, but I don't think he invented it. I forget who did. |
| Glassa | posted 4-Oct-2002 8:54pm I thought Galileo did, but maybe he just improved on it. |
