| Zang | posted 19-Jun-2002 9:31pm Although it would depend on the circumstances of the minor; where they lived, who they knew, etc., I would say that generally, in my neighbourhood, it would be a lot easier for a kid to buy crack or heroin than it would for them to buy liquor. Our liquor stores are operated by the government, and subsequently they take the practice of checking ID very seriously. The nearest liquor store to me is probably more than a mile away. I would only have to go two blocks in order to find myself in a pharmacopoeia of illicit substances. The drugs have more bang for your buck, and are available in smaller monetary amounts too. That sort of thing is important to kids, as they usually don't have very much money. |
| LindaH | posted 19-Jun-2002 9:57pm It has always seemed easier in my area for kids to get alcohol. It's in parents liquor cabinets, and older friends can buy it. I never noticed drugs floating around the way I saw alcohol all the time, but maybe that was just the people around me. |
| confetti | posted 19-Jun-2002 9:59pm Alcohol, obviously. It's more common and economic. |
| Galomorro | posted 19-Jun-2002 11:16pm Yes I think it is easier to buy illegal substances than to obtain alcohol if you are under legal age -- mainly cuz stores that sell alcohol are under pressure to check IDs of people that look underage and there has been lots of publicity about it. Yet in certain areas of big cities anyone, especially if they're young, can get offers to buy all sorts of illegal substances. |
| Amanda | posted 19-Jun-2002 11:29pm It is very easy for anybody to purchase illegal substances. But, it is also pretty easy for a minor to purchase alcohol or get someone else to purchase it for them. I'd say it's about the same for either of them. When I was doing drugs and drinking all the time, I never had any problems getting either of these. There was a store about 4 miles from my house that I could buy alcohol at. In the parking lot of this store, I could buy any drugs I wanted. |
| spidertea | posted 20-Jun-2002 12:00am Both are fairly easy to obtain. |
| freebird_old | posted 20-Jun-2002 12:03am I'm not sure, I know a lot of underage individuals just ask someone of age to buy it for them. I have been asked on my way into a store if I would do this, they even tried to sweeten the deal by saying I could keep the change. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 20-Jun-2002 12:19am It was when I was a kid, and my kids say it's still true. Why have two surveys asking basically the same question? |
| NthenSome | posted 20-Jun-2002 5:43am Most certainly, is my opinion. And what a shame. I only tried alcohol twice before becoming legal age (in Texas at the time, 18). But I sure sucked the life out of many a doobie before then. Hated them too, just did it because my best friend got started with it. |
| Dino | posted 20-Jun-2002 7:38am I dont remember anyone ever selling alcohol in my town. I knew where you could buy heroin and dope from though. |
| grmbrand | posted 20-Jun-2002 8:35am Couldn't say; I didn't have any interest in pot until I was old enough to drink |
| Enheduanna | posted 20-Jun-2002 9:56am If they're under the legal age for buying alcohol, then alcohol is an illegal substance! I really have no idea. I've heard tell that it's easier to get pot than alcohol, but I don't know if that's true. |
| Irene007 | posted 20-Jun-2002 10:00am I think it's just as easy to get either one... |
| CarolL | posted 20-Jun-2002 1:36pm yes |
| teatree | posted 20-Jun-2002 1:47pm I think many young people can get their hands on alcohol more easily than other substances. Many parents keep alcohol in the house and a lot of these kids are home alone with both parents working. |
| Biggles | posted 20-Jun-2002 2:20pm Yes, because if you're buying illegal substances, no-one cares how old you are. That said, in this country buying alcohol underage (you can buy it legally at 18) is pretty easy. Most girls aged 14+ could walk into a pub or off-licence (shop that sells alcohol) and buy it without being asked for any identification. A lot of lads could too. There aren't the same penalties for selling alcohol to underage kids or the same spot-checks here as there are in the US. |
| Biggles | (reply to Dino) posted 20-Jun-2002 2:21pm You didn't tell me that you grew up in Utah! |
| cody | posted 20-Jun-2002 4:04pm Equally easy for each... depending on what type of connections they have/how ballsy they are . Also depends on age. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 20-Jun-2002 9:44pm Probably alcohol as the kid may be able to have easy access to it at home. |
| Dino | (reply to Biggles) posted 21-Jun-2002 5:24am cheeky! On the street I mean. I live in a town ravaged by the steel works closing down. Sadly now every third shop is a pub, off-license or a charity shop! |
| Biggles | (reply to Dino) posted 21-Jun-2002 12:42pm Hey tell me about it! I suppose Sheffield's managed to reinvent itself quite well though |
| Dino | (reply to Biggles) posted 21-Jun-2002 5:36pm Considering how bad it was, its scrubbed up pretty well. |
| Jemmy | posted 21-Jun-2002 10:05pm I would say alcohol is easier to get, but it depends on what kind of connections you have. |
| Biggles | (reply to Jemmy) posted 22-Jun-2002 11:22am *imagines Jemmy as part of the seedy underworld* |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Biggles) posted 22-Jun-2002 11:37am If she's the seedy underworld, I'm so glad to live here. |

| nightvid | posted 23-Jun-2002 12:18pm It is easier to get Alcohol: Let grape juice sit out! |
| juliw | posted 23-Jun-2002 4:52pm Yes, drugs. Sue is a backstabbing dog! |
| NthenSome | (reply to juliw) posted 24-Jun-2002 2:21am Haha! |
| skylark | posted 24-Jun-2002 3:45am In Finland it is still easier to obtain alcohol if you're under 18. |
| NthenSome | (reply to skylark) posted 24-Jun-2002 3:49am "Easier" being under 18, as opposed to being older than 18? Sounds like Finland's got some happy children and some miserable adults. *pictures 30 year old man, waiting outside liquor store as a 9 year old starts to enter..."Hey, uh, kid - you think you could do me a favor?"* haha! |
| juliw | (reply to NthenSome) posted 24-Jun-2002 5:42pm Sue is sweet-not a backstabber or a dog. I am really ashamed of myself for doing that. |
| MixedUpMadame | posted 24-Jun-2002 11:45pm I'm a teenager and to be honest......I wouldn't have that hard of a time getting either one...but It's alot easier to walk up to some one and buy some marijuana than to convince someone to buy you alcohol. No matter what If you're young and determined to get something....you'll find someway to get it..It's sad but true. |
| skylark | (reply to NthenSome) posted 25-Jun-2002 8:53am |
| NthenSome | (reply to skylark) posted 25-Jun-2002 3:55pm I thought so - was just jokin' with ya. Still, it makes for a great far-fetched movie - everything's reversed like that where age is concerned. (Be difficult to work out...in fact, nevermind. Bad idea, I never spoke here, poof I'm out of your hair, haha.) |
| PunkRockDK331 | posted 4-Jul-2002 2:10am Yah, definitly you can find drugs almost anywhere. I get offered it by a mexican at the super wash all the time. |
| NthenSome | (reply to PunkRockDK331) posted 4-Jul-2002 12:42pm I'm usually offered a Mexican at that place! That it, I'm not going there anymore. haha. |
| PunkRockDK331 | (reply to NthenSome) posted 4-Jul-2002 11:39pm really, maybe i'm going to the wrong place. "Buy some drugs and we throw in a mexican!" That would make a great ad. |
| NthenSome | (reply to PunkRockDK331) posted 5-Jul-2002 4:39am I wouldn't advise accepting these sort of arrangements though. I once got suckered into a similar promotion at my supermarket while I was buying some corn beef hash. Damn Irishman I got out of it clogged up my garbage disposal for days. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to NthenSome) posted 5-Jul-2002 4:57am One of my favorite dinners mom cooks is breakfast, a sort of hash of corned-beef, potatoes, eggs, and fried tomatoes. Potatoes are the only real success I had in my garden. |
| PunkRockDK331 | (reply to NthenSome) posted 6-Jul-2002 5:23am ahhh thats the thing, you have to recycle them our they will do that to your disposal. I suggest taping his mouth shut, and clipping his fingernail. oh and lock the door to your bathroom when you take a shower |
| NthenSome | (reply to PunkRockDK331) posted 6-Jul-2002 12:41pm Recycle - not. They're 92% biodegradable. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to NthenSome) posted 7-Jul-2002 8:21pm Oh don't tape their mouths, if they're high enough proof, you'll risk an explosion. |
| NthenSome | (reply to Kristal_Rose) posted 7-Jul-2002 8:30pm "IF"?? Ya see, this just further validates my call for warning labels on the foreheads of such products - I don't care if they are premium giveaways. |
| PunkRockDK331 | (reply to NthenSome) posted 8-Jul-2002 1:25am really, there are bio-degradable? Here i am walking around with an aluminum one. Jeez i have to catch up in the mexican trade industry |
| NthenSome | (reply to PunkRockDK331) posted 8-Jul-2002 3:09am No no no nooo. We moved on to my token Irishman for purchasing the on-sale corn beef hash. (I'm Irish, I felt a little more comfortable in that area.) Well...this explains why the taping of the mouth and fingernail-clipping bit didn't work so well on this hot-headed little fella I've got chained to the hallway outside the bathroom I shower in. |
| BaYbIeBoO1984 | posted 8-Jul-2002 12:14pm i know for a fact (around where i live) you can get anything illegal you want.... and it is harder to get alcohol... i'm pretty sure its because people under 21 have all the illegal drugs.... |
| emm21 | posted 9-Jul-2002 4:32pm dealers only worrie about one thing..........MONEY(4 wot eva reason they may need it!) and most dealers i know wont deal to people aged 11 years old or younger, but i wood say it is very easy for young children to get hold of drugs and they also seem far more intrested in the drugs because there illegal and most people dont need to go to a shop to by alcohol if they live at home coz they can just nick it off there folkes. |
| PunkRockDK331 | (reply to NthenSome) posted 10-Jul-2002 7:43pm oh of course that explains the remark, i have a few irish folks i have brought home for me, they drank all my liquer in my cabinet so i chained to the hood of my car. He looks alright around St. Patricks day but other than that it looks out of place any other month. |
| NthenSome | (reply to PunkRockDK331) posted 13-Jul-2002 3:47am A good taxidermist can take care of that out-of-place look in him. |
| jojob | posted 6-Oct-2006 11:15am I am 23 now and live in the states. When I was in high school it was much easier to get pot (and other drugs) than it was to get alcohol. I think part of that was you could easily hide pot and bring it to school. Also when a drug is illegal for everyone the people providing it don't care how old you are because it's illegal for any age. |

There should be an option for: They're both equally obtainable. Since in the kid's cadse, both are ilegal, and there's a black market for both of them.
