I'll never eat cabbage soup again... |

I lost about 25 pounds in the last 5 years or so. I did this by cutting down substantially in the quantity of pork that I was eating, eating more fresh fruit, and being more active. |

I have the appetite from hell. I have low blood sugar as well, so I need food about every two hours. And I like food. So dieting never works. I've managed to lose 20 pounds by cutting out pop and juice and exercising. The other 10 pounds or so are quite stubborn. Any advice anyone? |

One of my friends was doing the cabbage soup diet not too long ago. I don't think it lasted more than a week or two. She still weighs more than 200 lbs. I'd guess. I think that the secret to weight loss is to incorporate as many attributes of a healthy lifestyle into your own lifestyle as you can manage. I think that too many people try these fad diets that no one could ever stick to. Then they give up, and go back to all of their previous bad habits. People are also too impatient. They expect to be able to lose weight very rapidly without changing their lifestyle too drastically. When I was about 19-20, I lost 30 lbs. in about 8 months. I didn't do this deliberately. I had just moved out on my own for the first time. I was very poor. I was eating, on average, one small meal every other day, and doing quite a bit of walking, dancing, and fudging. |

I used The Hacker's Diet, including the very sensible workout plan. Using the Eat Watch application on my handheld was invaluable to the process. I definitely pushed it--I chose a very aggressive (and frankly, unhealthy) caloric target (< 1200/day). I went from 216 to 175 in four months. I'm back to 180 now with (mostly) good nutrition and my training program for boot camp. Good luck and best wishes to all who earnestly seek to lose weight! |

Out of your list, I've tried over-the-counter diet pills. That's one of the stupidest things you can do to yourself. I couldn't sleep and I was afraid I would have a heart attack. Don't ever do it, especially if you're under 18 like I am.
I'll tell you what really works.
I (and some friends that I've turned it on to) am currently on the ABCD diet that I've devised. I'm 135 lbs. and my goal weight is 110. This is how I've broken it down for myself.
A-B: June 11th-July 2nd: Lose 15 lbs. So on 07/02, I will weigh 120. B-C: July 2nd-July 30th: Lose 10 lbs. So on 07/30, I will weight 110. C-D: Maintain weight until possible pregnancy or illness.
A-B: 1000 or less calories a day, 16 glasses of water, 4 hours of intensive exercise a week and D Fridays (I can eat within 2000 calories).
B-C: 1200 or less calories a day and the same applied to A-B.
C-D: The same applied to A-B but between 1200-2000 calories a day.
The clue is to be very organized. |
| Glassa | | posted 14-Jun-2002 6:13pm |
There's one here that's not listed. How about exercising too much so you can eat too much? It kind of backfires though. Your body starts wanting more food, so then you have to exercise more.
Diet pills without stimulants to help curb my appetite, and trying to not eat so many fattening/high calorie foods. I've gotten hooked on apples and oranges.
Anyway, I used to weigh at least 200 pounds. I now weigh 115 and have held it around there for 4 years. Just eat lots of fruits and veggies and get plenty of exercise. I'm practically a vegetarian. |

How tall are you? I'm 5'7" tall and weigh 135 pounds. My doctor has told me that I'm actually under my recommended weight. You might want to check with your doctor before losing that much weight. Also, you don't want to lose weight too fast. You'll never keep it off and it's unhealthy. |

Exercise and dieting plus cutting out all fat, which didn't work, then cutting out bad fat only and drastically cutting back on carbohydrates, which worked and still does. Westerners continue to cut fat from their diets yet get fatter every year. I believe Tongans are the fattest people on Earth, but they are genetically prone to it. They also eat high levels of New Zealand corned beef, coconut cream and taro, which is one of the most starchy (carbohydrate rich) foods around. Americans are next, followed by Australians and Canadians. High carbohydrate foods contribute more to obesity than fat. The weight loss industry is lying when it promotes a close to zero fat and high carb diet. |
romkey | | (reply to kaleb777) posted 15-Jun-2002 9:31am |
the problem isn't carbohydrates per se, but a combination of lack of exercise and high glycemic index carbohydrates. glycemic index measures how quickly food is turned into blood sugar. high glycemic index foods (like peanut butter, potatoes, I'm guessing taro, processed wheat products like most non-stone-ground breads) will be very quickly converted to blood sugar. this causes an insulin spike which will quickly store the sugar as fat. doing this a lot may also contribute to bringing on type II (adult onset) diabetes also, exercise will help mediate this; the better your metabolism, the more blood sugar you'll burn and the less fat you'll put on. but if you sit around all day (like I do ) and don't break a sweat you won't get there. according to what I've studied high protein diets tend to be bad for two reasons - much of what they take off is water weight, and your body doesn't burn proteins very cleanly and doing a very high protein low carb diet can damage your kidneys. It's also important not to entirely cut fat out of your diet. Most people need at least 20 grams of fat a day for their bodies to work properly. You also need fat in your diet to help make fat-soluble vitamins (like vitamins A, D and E) available to you. I would say that the more appropriate approach rather than high protein is low glycemic index (rather than low carbohydrate, which is too general), low fat, with exercise. |

Cutting out certain foods - but I don't consider it a "diet" - I don't do "diets", eating right should be a life style.
Oh, I tried that "10 pounds in 3 days" diet that was popular about a decade ago... That was stupid! |
| confetti | | (reply to moonstone) posted 15-Jun-2002 12:33pm |
I'm 5 ft 2. It'd be different if I were taller, but that's actually how much I'd have to weight to have the healthiest body mass index possible. I want to live a long time. I'm in great shape now, and I'm by no means fat...but I guess I want to be close to perfect |
| confetti | | (reply to Amanda) posted 15-Jun-2002 12:36pm |
See, I'm 5'2. It's a big difference that some inches can make. My doctor is throroughly approving my ABCD regime; and I've already lost 25 previous pounds and kept it off very well, in fact I know I'm continually losing it. I'm extremely dedicated to my exercise plan, more so than my diet plan (I binged yesterday, in fact) and it's really hard for most people but has whipped me into shape. |
| kaleb777 | | (reply to romkey) posted 15-Jun-2002 1:10pm |
I eat a lot of protein, and the only fat I cut is butter/margarine etc, cheese and full cream milk. I eat eggs, meat and fish. I haven't cut out carbs altogether, I just don't try to fill up on rice and bread. I used to be hungry all the time. I would eat whole wheat bread roles with no butter, just a banana inside them right before work and within 90 minutes I needed to eat again because I was getting light headed. I used to eat meusli bars (gramola?) I kept in my locker. Now I can go to work on a cup of coffee and a boiled egg and not feel hungry until lunch. The non-fat diet just made me ravenous and I ended up eating much more than I would if I just ate what I wanted. |

Low carbing worked brilliantly for me. As a type 2 diabetic it was fabulous for keeping my sugars level and I think it relates to the whole protein foods sustaining me longer than high carb foods that burn bright and brilliant for two minutes and leave me craving more immediately. Romkey is right on with his advice about high protein diets and the kidneys. That's why I didn't low carb for too long. Man, the weight just melts off though. |

I think people should do what suits their bodies and not listen to fudging scientists and other assorted wankers. Just low carb, not zero carb. Eat what people 10,000 years ago would eat. We're not designed to eat fudging bread all the time. Our ancestors, I mean the ones that made us the walking primates, ate a few grains but mostly nuts fruit and veges with as much meat as they could kill. We aren't really designed to eat processed high carb wheat meals and raw sugar all the time. |

If your doctor is okay with it, then who am I to say different. It's good you went to see your doctor before trying to lose weight. Doctors can usually tell you what you should try, as they know your history and that sort of thing. Good luck. |

I've never had to worry about losing weight but gaining it. I was trying to get on my high school wrestling team but couldn't get my weight up to the level that the coach wanted. I guess I have one of those high metabolisms because I seem to burn off whatever I eat pretty quickly. |

Thanks. BTW...lucky you I have a friend who's underweight and she's on this special malt and peanut butter-y diet her doctor prescribed her...and I'm very envious because it looks delicious! Is that what you're going to do? |
| Amanda | | (reply to confetti) posted 16-Jun-2002 2:05am |
No. I'm not going to try to gain weight, but I'm not going to try not to gain weight, either. I eat when I'm hungry, but never when I'm not. I stay active, exercise as often as possible, and all that good stuff. It's killing me not to be able to play softball or volleyball this year. My teams are tripping out about it. They think I'm good, but I seriously doubt that sometimes. (I can't play because I'm still under a doctor's care for my ankle which I broke a while back.) So, for now, I just play pool! :) Not much exercise, but it's fun! |
