I've seen most of these plenty of times. I'm not sure that I've seen a grouse or oriole. I've seen plenty of other birds too, I'm sure. Crows, doves, hummingbirds, mockingbirds, and nightingales, and even occasional parrots and lovebirds hang around my apartment. oh yeah, a duck flys by recently too. not too bad for living in LA. |

When my family & I used to vacation up at Big Bear in the winter,we would see the Blue Jays. My husband taught me that if we feed them peanuts they would take it,eat it & sometimes store it.
SO now to attract them to my yard I throw out peanuts. BUT only when my tom cats aren't anywhere around at the time.
Also....are Blue Jays also called CAT BIRDS??? You know?? The birds that swoop down & attack a cat for it's fur,to cushion & build it's nest??? |

Also I can recognize A cockatoo, galah, lorikeet, parakeet, pluvver, emu, kookaburra, magpie, willie wagtail and other Australian birds as well as some New Zealand birds - kiwi, kea, takahei, tui, pukeko, morepork, wood pidgeon, faintail, moa (extinct) and others. |

There are birds around here that we call cat birds.. they are a dark gray color and have these little rounded heads and big round black eyes.. very pretty.
I'm not too cool with Blue Jays because they used to attack my mom's cat who is 18 now (but he's still a cool dude)... I have two chihuahuas so I don't want them getting attacked.
When we lived in NC-out in the country, we always worried about the hawks getting the dogs.
I do love my birds though. |
| Cleo | | (reply to they) posted 13-Jun-2002 3:41am |
So your saying that it's the Blue Jay's that has been attacking my cats??? Or do Cat birds & Blue Jays both attack cats?? I've only seen my cats attacked a few times & I wasn't sure if it was one or the other, because I was at a disadvantage when it happened,it was so quick, plus I didn't have my glass on. |

Blue jays will definitely harass cats. But they're not collecting fur for a nest, because jays don't build nests. Instead, they lay their eggs in other birds' nests. |

Hey they, thanks for the link.I added it to my favorites. I'll look into this further when I have a chance. But I'm pretty sure it WAS a Blue Jay. Haven't seen him (I'm assuming that it is a him)lately. But yeah, sometimes a tiny bit of his fur might get pinched. Totally off the subject but I just bought a humming bird feeder & 2 wild bird feeders. There's this bird that sings & chirps outside my bedroom window at an un-godly hour (11pm to 3 or 4am ) everynight/morning. Do you know what kind of brd it could possibly be? As I am curious as to what it is. |
| Cleo | | (reply to phi) posted 18-Jun-2002 9:26pm |
Wow! I didn't know Blue Jays did that. You know.....harass cats. & here all this time I thought they were attacking my tom cats for fur, to feather their nest. Why do they lay their eggs in other birds nest??? Are they just too lazy to build their own? How weird! Do you have cats too? As I was asking they (above) I have this bird that sings & chirps at an un-godly hour every NIGHT outside my bedroom window. Do you think you might know what kind of bird it could be?? (I'm assuming that you may also be quite knowledgeble on these birds too) I was thinking that it could be a Songbird or a Nightingale. I love the little guys singing but geeze......not at 11pm to 3 or 4 am in the morning! I wish he would move a few houses down cause he's quite LOUD.Other than that his singing is beautiful! |
| Cleo |
So I guess it was a Blue Jay! Do you think you might know about what kind of bird it is that is singing outside my bedroom window every night?? Please see my reply to "they" & "phi" I'd like to try & get this little guy to move to another tree if possible. You know? By coaxing it into an area with a bird feeder of it's own.I sure could use some help from you guys on this delimma. |

I bet that came from Biggles huh?? Sometimes we get some real characters here at SC.Especially if the person is one who just happens upon the site for a brief time & then gets down right rude & crude & just plain nasty. The regs don't put up with them & a typing war usually ensues.Sometimes the offender never comes back. But then again theres always another one just waiting down the road somewhere. But most times I pick up on a persons vibes right away. If I feel that we are at least civil to one another then a friendship usually blossoms or if I feel the negative energy I just keep my distance. But if I'm verbally attacked THEN that's a whole nother ball game. I think you'll like it here. I like 99 percent of the people here. One or two may be jussssst a liiiiittttle bit too too for me. But for the most part I get along with just about everyone here.Takes time. Some regs prefer to hang back for a while before responding to a newbie.I don't know their reasons for that.**scratches her head**Everyones unique in their own little way. I consider myself the "Official one person welcoming committee. Must be the Hawaiian in me. BTW I live in California with my husband(David)& my two spoiled brat teenagers (ages 17 & 19) BUT I was born & raised in Honolulu Hawaii. How bout you? I've been here at SC for a year & 4 months.I've met one person here. Krista_Rose, last year at a Hawaiian festival in L.A. It's so funny that you mentioned it because I have night time birds in my neighborhood too.. I grew up about 2 or 3 blocks away from the house I live in now and I never heard a bird sing at night in this area.. They are different kinds of birds too. They sound like they're talking to each other across the street. I think my birds are either senile or like me, they just can't sleep at night.
I want to get another hummingbird feeder, even though hummingbirds are few and far between here in the suburbs. My grandma lives out in the country and has like 17 that come on a regular basis. (she knows because she has breakfast and watches them everyday)..
The last time I had a hummingbird feeder, I hung it outside my kitchen window and ants started climbing up my house and into the window somehow.. hadda take it down. |

I've never been to California, but I have a vague idea of where the San Diego area is. Isn't it south of L.A.? I've exchanged replies with Nthensome and a guy named Dino who seems to think that Mike Hunt isn't my real name. I live a l00 miles North of Kate. The mileage is a bit more than 100 miles, but I'm just rounding off to give you a general idea where I am. |
| Cleo |
Yeah, San Diego IS south of L.A. I live between both major cites. So if I have to go the airport for any reason I have to drive almost the same distance to either one. Cept L.A.X. is an easier drive. Nthensome & Dino are very cool....really. Perhaps it's something about your handle which makes them question you about it. Try not to get too bent on users comments or suspicious under tones. It's just that we've had so many STRANGE people at this site, that some of us here may tend be skeptical of a newbies handle sometimes. The reason for that is because if a user had come off too crass, crude, rude & very offensive to the SC community, the offender(s) will leave the site & come back with a new handle & it would start all over again. It's happened a few times in the past, & when Bill found out who they were he kicked them off the site. Try not to get offended by that I'm sure that they were just trying to be cautious & not out to offend you. Give it time.**pats you on the back** I'm sure that Dino & Nthensome will soon see that your personality is nothing like some former offender of the past,& things will become very enjoyable when talking to them in the future. Trust me. 99 percent of the people here are really cool to talk to. |
| mikehunt696 | | (reply to Cleo) posted 22-Jun-2002 5:51am |
I haven't had any problems with Nthensome, but Dino seems to think I'm making up my user name. If he wants to think that, it's okay with me. Maybe once he sees I'm not up to anything devious he'll lighten up. |
| NthenSome |
Actually, I must have the most intense account of a large group of members here believing I was someone I wasn't. I've been hacked to death since last November, when I got a new computer with XP. Long story short, I toughed it out and I'm glad I did. I'd never before had any reason to "go online" before SC. These people are a lot of fun, very intelligent and even the few less tactful members add nicely to the mix. Dino was just funning around like I was I think...but it doesn't sound like anyone needs to be concerned by your judgement - you're already painting a picture of being a pretty even-keeled kinda guy. I trust you'll soon enough find out on your own how fun everyone can be here. So...have fun. (Re your name: You must have caught hellacious hilarity about the time 'Porky's' was in the theaters...) |

If I remember correctly, Porky's came out in the very early 80's and I was born in 1980, so if I'm correct it would have come out when I was very young. I don't recall getting any teasing even in high school about my name. Maybe I got lucky and had some mature acting classmates or maybe none of them saw Porky's. I haven't seen it in years myself and all I remember is the thing with the girls showering and the guys peeking in and getting caught by Beulah Ballbuster. That and the scene where she's trying to convince the principal to make the guys drop their pants so she can inspect them and catch the guilty party. That's a rather memorable scene because everyone is cracking up so badly. I hope you are right about Dino. I hate to get started off on the wrong foot with someone. |

It's pretty tiring playing dominoes with these 97 year olds, though - I have to wake them four or five times in every game, or help them to the bathroom, or change their Depends...(haha) Getting old is a new thing to me, but it's another chapter in life I look forward to experiencing. I've always realized just how short life is - I can remember being your age like it was three weeks ago (and how many times have you heard that?), it's true. Just another chapter. |
| mikehunt696 | | (reply to NthenSome) posted 24-Jun-2002 4:09am |
Oh God, you're not going to do the "When I was your age" crap are you? I get that a lot at work as I'm one of the younger employees. I know they are just teasing, but it does get old (no pun intended) after awhile. I'm curious about one thing-who is the youngest person here and who is the oldest. I get the feeling that confetti is young, probably a teenager, by the way she talks, but is she the youngest of the bunch? |
| NthenSome |
I think Confetti is only 15. I don't know who the oldest is, but Dabprovin and Kate suggest the are "up there". Biggles is only 18, which surprised me - very intelligent. I think Dino's pretty young, he talks about school a lot. Kristal_Rose is around 47 or 48 (I met her, gave her and a couple of her friends a tour of Paramount). BrianW is about 20. (He tries to be a nuisance sometimes, but you can't help but like the guy.) JoeSchmoe is pretty young, unless he's just very immature. He spends his days at the arcade, from what I gather. ASexyBabe seems young-at-heart, but she's old enough to be married to ASexyBabesToy - they're a very happy couple. Mandy is 36, I believe she once said. The others, I'm not sure. It's pretty cool how you come to know people here, and sort of "fall into" your own little group after a while. You'll see, namely since you're pretty active with it already. Myself, I never had a reason to be on the Internet until I bumped in SC. It's a damn fun place at times. |
| mikehunt696 | | (reply to NthenSome) posted 24-Jun-2002 4:29am |
I think you're correct about JoeSchmoe as I was looking at the Rogue's Gallery and reading stuff in Forum and it appears he just graduated from high school which means he is about 17 or 18, but I do agree that he comes off as immature, especially with the bragging about being the hottest guy. I thought Biggles would be much older as she seems very mature. I don't think I've talked with BrianW, ASexyBabe or her husband and only a couple of times with Dino. I've mostly talked to you and dabprovin who seems to be very nice. I've talked to another female user, but I can't remember he name right now. |

"female, can't remember he name" might have been your clue there. Gaping jaw approaching stroke... "47 or 48"? I'm 39, and most folks think I look younger. This is my karma for imagining you to be 47 or 48 as well. Did you get to use slide rules in school and remember when calculators appeared, or push button phones? Oh got to try something... Yeah, this seems to work fine. |

That's what it was referred to in Forum. Yes, I've spoken with Kristal Rose, but there was another female user as well, it might have been cuteasabutton. |

Yeah I got that email.I've been lagging it with my replies.Sorry. **takes a hefty shot of her Geritol & a triple dose of gikoba pills** Just pay no attention to me. Must be all the paint I've been inhaling lately. **dizzy look on her face** But yeah! I look forward to seeing you guys there too. I heard that Freebird wont be able to attend the festival this year but she'll try to make it next year with her step-mom. **panic look on her face & inserts her fist into her mouth** Ummm, yeah I can hardly wait to meet her step **cough** mom. Don't forget to bring something to protect your head from the summertime sun,& maybe some sun lotion. It gets hot in the park.I'll be bringing a rolling cooler with water & packing a wallet of "shop to I drop mad money" Oh & my camera too. OHHHHHHHHHHH! I might be bringing my "best-test girlfriend in the whole wide world." She might be flying in from Hawaii just about that time.**crosses her fingers** It's still a little hazy right now but I just wanted to mention that. When we where roomies in Honolulu (in our twenties) people thought that she & I were a couple. Our boyfriends were so jealous of our sisterly closeness. So jealous that my then boyfriend now husband moved me up here to separte us.Now it cost him more money cause we talk up a storm on the phone. 26 days to go! |
