| lisashea | posted 1-Dec-1998 12:24pm I've seen Antz, but not A Bug's Life yet. Sure, there are two bug movies. Isn't that the way Hollywood always works? Two meteor movies. Two water-disaster movies. Two lava-disaster movies. Sure, somebody hears about the idea and thinks they can do it better. That's the way of capitalism :) |

| romkey | posted 1-Dec-1998 1:32pm I really didn't need to see an ant version of Woody Allen. to the survey creator: if you were interested in seeing what we thought of animation, plots, scripts, voice-overs, etc., you should've given us some options for them instead of making us answer in the comments. One reason to let us check boxes is it makes tallying up people's opinions easy (or possible), which is a lot of what survey taking is about. |
| romkey | posted 1-Dec-1998 1:33pm and here I thought someone else had created this survey and went a-lecturin'... at least I didn't name names :) |

| hunter | posted 1-Dec-1998 2:14pm Romkey, I agree with what you're saying, but a) I tend to get into huge long lists of options and people complain about that and b) the options I listed were the ones I thought were easily quantifiable, whereas the more subjective aspects are so complex that I figured the comment box was a better place for them. |
| hunter | posted 1-Dec-1998 2:16pm As far as the question itself goes, overall I thought A Bug's Life was better than Antz. The script and plot were stronger and the actors didn't overpower their characters in ABL as they did in Antz. I thought the animation of the ants was better in Antz, both the facial expressions and movements of the individual ants, and the sense of the collective swarm. But the backgrounds in ABL were astounding and extremely complex, whereas the backgrounds in Antz were comparably simple. |
| lizzie | posted 1-Dec-1998 3:19pm I haven't seen either yet, but I would like to see both. I think I am looking forward to A Bug's Life more, because I've heard it's the better movie. |
| Jody | posted 1-Dec-1998 3:47pm I haven't seen A Bug's Life yet, but I intend to. |
| milktree | posted 1-Dec-1998 5:53pm I guess Starship Troopers doesn't count as a bug movie, eh? |
| lisashea | posted 1-Dec-1998 6:26pm Milktree: ROTFL :) Yup, I think it was :) |
| bill | posted 2-Dec-1998 9:06am A note to all: If you see A Bug's Life, stay for the credits - it may have been the best/funniest part! |
| lelle | posted 2-Dec-1998 12:43pm I saw Antz and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have not seen A Bug's Life. |
| dpolicar | posted 2-Dec-1998 1:24pm Haven't seen 'em; am enough of an icthyophobe that they don't really appeal to me. |
| gilly | posted 6-Dec-1998 11:55pm A Bug's Life was fabulous, haven't seen Antz. And yeah, the credits really made my head explode. |
| lion | posted 7-Dec-1998 12:07am My vote is for A Bug's Life. There seem to be a lot more thought and effort put into it than Antz. And yes, definitely stay for the credits!! |
| romkey | posted 7-Dec-1998 12:48am we just saw A Bug's Life finally and it was GREAT. I really didn't enjoy Antz all that much (I really did not need a film about an animated Woody Allen ant, as much as I do like Woody Allen). I thought that A Bug's Life was funnier, more interesting and generally a better film. And yeah, the credits were hilarious. |
| seanhuxter | posted 7-Dec-1998 11:18am I thought ANTZ was the SLIGHTLY better story. Technically they were both fantastic. (I'm a computer animator myself and am in awe of both works.) "A Bug's Life" was more jeuvenile a story, (basically it's the "Three Amigos" done as ants) and more aimed at children, while ANTZ seemed more aimed at adults, but children would love it too. My daughter thought both were fantastic, and she was just three. She was frightened of some scenes in ANTZ (any with General Mandible being evil) but she was also frightened of the bird-chase scenes in "A Bug's Life". I loved both, but have to say that ANTZ was a pleasant surprise. I didn't even mind Woody Allen in it. |
