| mandy | posted 21-May-2002 8:36pm Self taught...don't remember when. |
| cuteasabutton | posted 21-May-2002 9:21pm I was not allowed to do so, the first time I did it was when I was about 20. |
| SueBee | posted 21-May-2002 10:46pm I think I was 13 when my dad would finally let me use the lawnmower. I wanted to do it when I was much younger, but he was afraid I'd get hurt. |
| cody | posted 21-May-2002 10:50pm Less than 8. Probably 6 or 7 with help... I remember I helped my Dad push the mower. |
| Oscar | posted 21-May-2002 11:33pm young, but I don't remember how young |
| bobofwestgate | posted 22-May-2002 12:59am I never learned. My dad told me when I was about 11 or 12 that it was time I started mowing the lawn. I wasn't given any lessons but he did tell me to check for any rocks in the grass before I started and to make sure that the opening on the mower where the grass ejected was facing away from any windows. It was the side ejector type of mower and it didn't have one of those bags, so I had to rake after I mowed. |
| Amanda | posted 22-May-2002 1:40am I was probably about 8 or 9 years old. I have 2 older brothers and they usually cut our grass. It looked fun and I always wanted to do it. My parents finally let me and I decided my older brothers could keep that job! We have a lot of land, but they only cut our main yard. My Dad or some of his employees always cut the other land on tractors. I never got to drive the tractor until about a year ago. They didn't trust me. Maybe it had something to do with my lawnmower wreck when I was 14?!?!?! |
| Zang | posted 22-May-2002 4:14am Hard to say. My father used to set me on the handles of the old push mower when I was an infant, so I guess I had a pretty up-close introduction at an early age. I don't remember when we got the electric mower, probably late sixties or early seventies. I wouldn't have been anywhere near strong enough to use the old push mower when that was all we had. My mother usually cut the lawn. It was something she enjoyed. I probably started doing it from time to time when I was about nine. I really don't remember. That was over 30 years ago, and mowing lawns isn't something that I would consider memorable. |
| Dino | posted 22-May-2002 7:33am What kind of freaked up question is this. This should win an award surely for most peurile question know to man, the universe, and beyond. |
| grmbrand | posted 22-May-2002 8:39am Probably nine or ten. My mom had me mowing the lawn regularly by age twelve and my sister -never- had to do it. My mom, in a true celebration of Grrrl Power, was afraid my sister might hurt herself--now my sister is in better physical shape than I am and I'm training for freakin' boot camp, here. But I'm not bitter |
| jettles | posted 22-May-2002 8:46am i don't remember my age, my guess would be under 8yo. i used to follow my dad around the yard when he was using the non-powered push mower we had. i wish i still had it, it was fun and had the best sound when cutting the grass. |
| skylark | posted 22-May-2002 9:00am I guess I wasn't allowed to mow grass by myself before I was 8 or 9, so let's say 9. At that age it was kind of heavy to push the mower, though. The mower had an engine, but it didn't move the wheels. A couple of years later it was almost always I who mowed our grass (and my grandmother's too) and I even got money from it. |
| Enheduanna | posted 22-May-2002 9:20am I don't remember, but for a while when I was growing up it was my weekly chore to mow the lawn. We had lemon trees in our front yard, and it always smelled really yummy when I mowed over a fallen lemon. It smelled less yummy when I mowed over a pile of crap that someone else's dog left. |

| romkey | posted 22-May-2002 9:59am I really have no idea. I don't think there's particularly much to learn, though. |
| Dino | (reply to romkey) posted 22-May-2002 11:03am Hello you! I haven't said anything to you in ages. So er...hello! |
| Lahdee | posted 22-May-2002 11:44am I dont know--I guess preteen or early teen age. Dad had an old manual lawn mower-what are they called? Anyway I hated that thing |
| romkey | (reply to Dino) posted 22-May-2002 12:46pm hi Dino! |
| southernyankee | posted 22-May-2002 1:00pm 10. My family moved to the suburbs for the first time when i was 9. |
| teatree | posted 22-May-2002 2:03pm I was about 8 years old, but I wasn't taught anything. I was given a few basic safety guidelines and told by my grandmother to get to work. I traded off mowing the lawn with my sister, she did it one week, I did it the next, etc. |
| dora | posted 22-May-2002 5:59pm I don't know.I sometimes mowed grass with my grandparents when I was on vacation,they had grass to mow.I helped my granddaddy a bit,I was 6 or 7 I guess,but I never done it myself alone.So I don't know if I learned how to really mow grass. |
| confetti | posted 22-May-2002 6:04pm I was never instructed in the art form of 'mowing grass' but I imagine it mustn't be so intricate. |
| NthenSome | posted 23-May-2002 12:16am Under 8 |
| Jemmy | posted 23-May-2002 3:25pm I haven't learned yet, I'm 16. I didn't know there was anything to learn. I used a riding lawnmower a few years ago. Anyway, my grandfather loves to mow the grass, so I have no need to. |
| Biggles | posted 23-May-2002 4:32pm I've never actually used a lawn-mower so I suppose technically I haven't "learned". But I know how to do it - plug in the extension cable, plug the mower into that, squeeze the handle so that it starts, move it in sweeping movements left to right across the grass. Don't run over the cable, little brother, the steps. Careful going down the hill (my garden is all on a slope). Don't knock the mower into the pond. Don't mow mum's flowerbeds. Simple. Wonder why my dad doesn't manage to do all of that..... |
| NthenSome | (reply to Biggles) posted 23-May-2002 9:55pm "No, no the cat doesn't like it - watch out for that." . "Oh no, no - the gravel pit doesn't need anymore mowing, come on out of there." I loved mowing grass! Among other things too. |

| bobofwestgate | (reply to harekrishnadasa) posted 24-May-2002 12:47am I already know how to mow a lawn harekrishnadasa. What I meant it I learned on my own with no lessons from my dad except for the brief instructions I mentioned in my previous comment. Thanks for the link. |
| Lex | posted 24-May-2002 9:25am We had our "Grass cutting and moving methods" lesson in 3rd year primary school. So I'd have been about 10. I remember that the homework was to cut the lawn, and then write a page on what liked and disliked about it. |

| Cleo | posted 25-May-2002 10:31pm I've never mowed a lawn when I was little & growing up.We always lived in apartments. This is our 3rd house (as an adult) & I still haven't mowed the lawn.We have a gardener. |
| nasale | posted 26-May-2002 4:39pm What a waste of time that is! I think we should all throw away our mowers and buy a goat. It's much more environmentally friendly and you could make cheese besides! |
| juliw | posted 27-May-2002 10:46am I still don't know how. |
| natsim | posted 28-May-2002 8:14pm I have never mown grass in my life. |

| natsim | (reply to NthenSome) posted 28-May-2002 9:50pm Ummm.... no. |
| mross | posted 10-Feb-2007 2:08am I never had any formal lessons. When I was around 12, my dad showed me how to put gas in the mower & then start it up. That was the extent of my training & I was on my own while mowing. |
