| darkshadowsseeker | posted 7-May-2002 1:47am About the only one that would probably occur in my area would be volcanic eruption. We were affected in some areas by the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens (in Washington state) and there are been reports in the last couple of years that indicate that Mount Hood (in Oregon, north of where I live) may become active. There has been seismic activity on the mountain and occasionally steam coming from the peak. The other thing I would probably fear would be a tsunami, but only if I was on the coast. |
| mandy | posted 7-May-2002 2:06am No fear... Just a sick sense of..."Yes!!!! COOL!" Today, May 6th, on my 1/2 hour commute to work, the weather changed from bright and cool to Dark and Blizzard in this ominous little event that had me whooping and hollering at the top of my lungs, in my car, like a frickin' Clampett. Black sky engulfed me and snow battered the windshield and clear skies and sunlight in the rearview mirror! It felt apocalyptic! I felt a surge of energy rarely experienced by a pet shop gurl. |
| Cleo | posted 7-May-2002 2:22am Tidal Wave |
| kaleb777 | posted 7-May-2002 2:48am Cyclone (Hurricane), although Brisbane is far enough south to avoid most tropical cyclones. Bushfires are also scary. I suppose the violent storms we get in the late afternoon in summer are the scariest I have experienced in Australia since we get very few earthquakes and no volcanos. |
| natsim | posted 7-May-2002 4:22am Where I currently live (Melbourne, AUS) I don't really fear any natural disasters, but when I grew up (in country South Australia) I lived in almost constant fear of bushfires. |
| Dino | posted 7-May-2002 7:11am Tidal Wave I guess as I can't swim. |
| skylark | posted 7-May-2002 7:25am I fear none of them. All of these are extremely rare, for example, there is no vulcanic activity in Finland. We have bad storms sometimes, but real natural disasters are quite unknown. |
| skylark | (reply to Dino) posted 7-May-2002 7:27am Even if you could swim, that would be of little use. Imagine what it must be like to be buried under millions of litres of water! |
| jettles | posted 7-May-2002 8:03am hurricane because of where i live now(florida) and earthquake, just because! |
| grmbrand | posted 7-May-2002 8:03am If you mean "fear out of sheer unsurvivability", then I'd say avalanche. If you mean "fear out of probability of occurrance", then I'd say hurricane. |
| Enheduanna | posted 7-May-2002 9:07am None of these, really. Most of them don't really happen where I live. I guess I might be afraid of tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, and tidal waves if I lived somewhere they were likely to happen. I grew up in earthquake country, and when I was little I was very afraid of them, but not anymore. |
| Lahdee | posted 7-May-2002 10:17am Hurricane. I'm moving to the Florida Keys in June. Hubby is already there. |
| Biggles | posted 7-May-2002 12:15pm I don't really fear any of them. I worry about some things and not about others. Natural disasters just aren't on my list of things worth worrying about. |
| CarolL | posted 7-May-2002 12:19pm I think Avalanche because you just bloody well have no where to go. |
| CarolL | (reply to skylark) posted 7-May-2002 12:21pm Do you mean activity by Vulcans like Spock? |
| teatree | posted 7-May-2002 12:43pm Probably volcanic eruption. We rarely, if ever get tornadoes, landslides, hurricanes, avalanches, flash floods or earthquakes in our part of Oregon. We haven't had a real flood in the Willamette Valley since the 1960's because of the dams and flood control measures that have been taken. The last flood we had was in the adjacent Mohawk Valley when the Mohawk River flooded in 1996, but it didn't carry over into our area. The only time I would fear a tsunami is if I was visiting the coast when one occurred. |
| cuteasabutton | posted 7-May-2002 12:56pm Earthquake, Salt Lake is right on the Faultline. |
| spidertea | posted 7-May-2002 1:42pm Hurricanes and volcanoes, because I've never experienced them. It's hard for hurricanes to make it into the middle of the United States. I've never even seen a mountain, let alone a volcano! |
| confetti | posted 7-May-2002 2:33pm I have been through so many earthquakes in my life I don't fear them. I mean, look at where I've spent most of my life: San Francisco, California and Central America. I don't fear volcanic eruptions, either, which has to say something for my courage; we live in an area enclosed by four alive volcanoes. Hurricanes, on the other hand, are scary. There's something about water when it's very powerful that's frightening. |
| icurok | posted 7-May-2002 3:09pm I don't so much fear for myself, but I fear for the people affected by a Mega Tsunami. Mega Tsunamis are caused by landslides. A landslide caused by an eruption from a large volcanic island has the potential to be devastating. Put it this way, when the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma next erupts, I don't want to be in Florida (4000 miles away) at the time. |
| Galomorro | posted 7-May-2002 8:22pm Yuck - all of them. Earthquake maybe, if it's really huge, because then it can cause fires. |
| SueBee | posted 7-May-2002 11:58pm Hurricanes frighten me the most, but I don't really have any need to fear them since we don't get them around here. I get nervous when the wind blows really hard though. We live between two active volcanoes, but that doesn't scare me. We're also likely to have a really bad earthquake here in my lifetime, but that doesn't bother me either. |
| JoeMahurin | posted 8-May-2002 12:12am I'm an Alabamian. A Tornado on naturally feared. All the other choices are slim to none where I live. |
| skylark | (reply to CarolL) posted 8-May-2002 3:32am |
| romkey | posted 8-May-2002 10:55am earthquakes or tornados; they're more likely to happen where I live than volcanoes, tidal waves, landslides, avalanches or flash floods. I've lived in earthquake country and I'm more concerned by the sudden violence of them than many of the others; you get some warning about a hurricane, and there are things you can do to prepare. that said, I'm not particularly concerned about any of them... though we did have a small earthquake a few weeks ago. |
| Cleo | (reply to Dino) posted 8-May-2002 4:18pm **throws you a life vest & a survivalist packet** |
| actress | posted 8-May-2002 6:35pm Well I can't really say earthquake considering that I live in California and I'm used to those, and I'm originally from Kansas so tornado don't bother me so I'll have to say the rest. |
| actress | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 8-May-2002 6:39pm I know I probably sound insane but I would love to see a volcano erupt. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to actress) posted 8-May-2002 8:24pm Everytime they have shown file footage of the May 18, 1980 Mount St Helens eruption (the BIG one), I get cold chills down my spine. I don't know if it's seeing the eruption again or that and a combination of the footage and the music that they play with the footage-it's always Dust in the Wind by Kansas. |
| actress | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 8-May-2002 10:12pm That is the most facinating disaster that I know. Of course I would hate for anyone to get hurt or killed. |
| Zang | posted 8-May-2002 11:58pm I'm not afraid of any stinking natural disasters! |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to actress) posted 9-May-2002 2:02am A lot of people died when Mount St Helens blew her top. |

| tiana | posted 10-May-2002 5:35am earthquakes arent scary, ive lived in california my whole life and theyre just not that scary, and they dont even last that long, and contrary to popular belief an earthquake is not going to cause california to break away from the us and become an island, its just not going to happen, get over it |
| Dino | (reply to tiana) posted 10-May-2002 6:57am If you were a character in a movie - this would be the point when the rest of us go "Oh, we know what's coming now" |
| Glassa | posted 10-May-2002 9:18am I have a recurring nightmare about not being able to find a good basement for a tornado. Then again, I live in the midwest where tornadoes are common in spring and fall. |

| kirst | posted 14-May-2002 7:27pm I don't exactly fear any of these. The ones that I experience most often are typhoons (like a hurricane) and landslips. If it's a really bad typhoon, we just get off of our boat and head inland. Landslips usually only happen when we have heavy rain... |
