why does the initial question say what do you like to listen to, then the comments says prefer to listen to? I answered based on the main question, what I like to listen to. preference is a narrower category.
I'll listen to (and like) just about anything. I tend to avoid opera, or heavy chorals (but some are good). I also don't do rap much.

Where's blues? And don't tell me it's part of R&B/Soul.

Has this survey been done before?

Good choices. I only checked the ones I like a substantial fraction of; there are isolated cases of other (unchecked) genres that I like as well. Two kinds that were missing, neither of which I like, were Rap and Elevator.

Good selection! I have a lot of classical and celtic music in my collection, some new swing, lots of 'classic rock'. I love the Conan soundtrack, and Paul Simon, Clannad and even new stuff like Chumbawumba (the lyrics are pretty interesting).

I checked "Industrial," but I don't like most of what gets called that. (NIN, Skinny Puppy, Nitzer Ebb, etc.) I don't like drum machines. I'm thinking more of Einsturzende Neubauten and early SPK--bands where "Industrial" means "the sound of metal on metal." I saw EN in concert, and they played a song that included a giant, industrial spring that they played with a power drill. Now THAT'S industrial. I also like the Residents, who are difficult to put into any of these categories, and the very few bands that have ever managed to remind me of them. And, for a category you didn't list, there are (or at least were) a few groups doing a kind of spoken-word-with-backing-band thing (Bongwater, King Missile, Maggie Estepp, Bruce McCullough, Bongo Fury) that I just love.

I'd classify most of my music as "pop". I know its corny, but I'm a sucker for the millions of cute boy bands out there. The ones with talent I like even better.

Check out the Advanced Stats on this one: the Goth, metal, punk, and ska listeners are all young, on average (surprise!), but the very youngest group is the listeners to . . . Polka!!! (Is this a harbinger of the Polka craze of the early 21st century? After this awful swing revival, I wouldn't rule anything out.)

I'm with you EB. I've loved swing for a long time (it's my parents' era) and was really psyched when the revival began trickling in.

I was hoping once to architect an internet radio station. I've been beat to it. So, instead here is a link to my station: 'Harmonic Distortion' under the category 'Insane Asylum'. I've ranked 100's of recording artists. Some of the top rankers on the Playlist include Velvet Underground, Bjork, B-52's, Glenn Miller, Van Morrison, and Siouxsie & the Banshees.

I listen to almost every type of music listed here. I also listen to rap (I know, I know). I think that music in and of itself is great. I can't function without it. Every kind of music has some positive quality to it, and I think that it all comes down to how it makes you feel. Music is a very emotional experience for me. :)
