There's really not one particular thing, many things do- whatever catches my attention in a good way: sitting at my desk, it's the tin-can bi-plane hanging over my head, and what it reminds me of. Sometimes it might be the sun breaking through clouds, coffee, a plate of salmon, my cat sleeping, opening my eyes in the morning and seeing sunshine, opening my eyes in the morning and seeing a sweetheart or good friend, walking down the street and seeing a children playing, catching little glimpses of humanity: a punk-pierced-anarchist holding the door for an elderly man; a pair of old women giggling behind the back of an attractive younger man; pre-teens defying mortality riding skateboards down the railings in a busy downtown area.... noticing the world in which I'm living makes me smile. |

my family is the one thing that makes me smile. i never thought that i would be a family man, but here i am. to wake up on a sunday morning to my baby son patting my face and mumblin something that resembles "daddy" and my wife smiling at me from behind him. i just dont think theres anything else in the world that could make me feel more alive! sometimes i really think that im the luckiest guy i know, to be loved by my family. |

There are two things. When I was staying in Sweden, my boss was trying to give me an explanation of what her window wiper sounded like when it was hanging of the car. And then there was the guy who weighs about 18 stone doing a fantastic version of a turkey running for its life. You had to be there. |
| Dino | | (reply to Cain) posted 24-Apr-2002 8:23am |
Do you sit on public transport and think of these things and then get all smirky and embarass yourself? |
| kaleb777 | | (reply to mandy) posted 24-Apr-2002 4:09pm |

| Cain | | (reply to Dino) posted 25-Apr-2002 5:54am |
Nah, I can laugh on the inside. Weird you should say that though - apparently when I'm thinking about sex, my head tilts to the right. It means that all my friends can tell what's on my mind. That can be embarassing. |

You hit a number of things that make me smile! Add to that; A chorus of tree frogs becoming totally silent when thunder strikes and then slowly resuming their chant afterwards. An American Bittern quietly hunting by a lake (in Canada). A spectacular sun set through the clouds on a stormy night. Being able to light an outside fire in the rain. A rainbow trailing onto a private lake we rented for the weekend. A spectacular Auroris Borealis show in the evening sky. All of this happened in one weekend - I still, to this day, feel that it was Mother-Nature putting on a show just for us! I'll never forget it - what a great weekend! |

My memories of Portugal - the Açores, Lajes. I was stationed there for a year. I tell people that it's there, stretched out, my Heaven On Earth. I would sit near the cliffs for endless hours by myself and just smile. The cliffs - where nothing man-made could be seen even if you completely spun around looking for it. The occasional sheep, maybe a lazy group of steer, would saunter passed - not bothered, not to be bothered. Ah, the cliffs of Portugal - unknown, untainted prospect of beauty, where beauty itself is in its most expressive state, enduring. Mossy-green hills forever extending behind me; seventy feet of sheer cliff before me. Even at that height, I could feel the water from the furious ocean below, slamming against the ever-shaping rocks, and spraying me. I would read, write, sleep - even in the drizzling rain sometimes! Ahhh...smiling again at my Heaven On Earth... Yeah. That place. Plus, McDonald's restaurants. The feeling I get when I order the supersize fries is pretty enchanting itself, haha! Incidentally, though I described a place here in answer to your survey, I opted "A certain experience". If that needs explaining, I haven't conveyed my Heaven On Earth with justice. |
