| confetti | posted 18-Apr-2002 12:00am Age: 15 in May Sex: Girl Too tired to talk about this, but you've obviously heard of the infamous Flakes "Eat Me" commercial, right? That's all I can think of. Oh, and there was a case of the simulated moisture on a CoverGirl lipstick spelling out "sex". It's pretty cool crap. What made me want to go into advertising. |
| cuteasabutton | posted 18-Apr-2002 12:25am 1.26 2.female 3.Yes 4.I don't know, they were subliminal. 5. Same as above 6.Bad- I don't like stuff planted in my brain..... Please see the movie "They Live" |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 18-Apr-2002 12:44am I'm 49 & female and to be quite frank, I think subliminal messages don't exist. I'm not aware of seeing any or reacting to any. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to confetti) posted 18-Apr-2002 12:45am We snuck this one in right under her nose! She must be slipping! |
| confetti | (reply to darkshadowsseeker) posted 18-Apr-2002 1:15am She's weakening! And I thought I'd never see the day |
| msgman | posted 18-Apr-2002 3:59am 1. Old enough. 2. Yes. 3. Of course theydrink more coffeeare 4. Lots ofwear Nikethem 5. One good example is "Star Wars Episode One: The PhantomCoca ColaMenace" 6. Definitely explain. |
| Irene007 | posted 18-Apr-2002 7:27am 1. 40 2. Female 3. Yes (almost) 4. Most is just imagery that invokes feelings; like in an ad for a stereo system, in the photo's background there is a beautiful woman dressed in a night gown, out of focus but quite present. I have seen (I was 13 the 1st time I noticed) the word "sex" airbrushed into ice cubes in ads for alcoholic drinks. In fact, everytime I ever saw this was in an ad for alcohol. Martini & Rossi had it airbrushed into a wave (it was a picture of people sailing) near the caption. In all honesty, I have used it myself when designing a business card for a customer that distributed pornographic videos. I used it, because I liked the "cliché" of it. 4. I answered that in #3. 5. If you mean the type of subliminal message that is flashed in the screen for a fraction of a second (like Coca Cola used to do in theaters), I think that's illegal now? Subliminal messages can be dressing to look the part, like a business man that is interviewed for a TV program will wear his best suit in order to look successful when he normally goes to work in golfing pants. With his attire, he is subliminally showing you his success. So, to answer this question; it's in everything! 6. It can be good if you are trying to convey a message but I think in the long run it's bad. People are too easily influenced (in general). |
| Dino | posted 18-Apr-2002 8:16am I am male and 30 (yes Grmbrand - male) and I don't reckon they do it like I heard they used to do it. I think there was some thing about coca cola slipping in flash adverts of coke and people having an urge to buy it. But I don't think they do it anymore. If they got found out people would be pretty pissed off. Stores use psychology - like supermarkets and the warm coloured flooring as warm colour make you hungrier and more likely to spend money. I guess you don't mean that though. Sorry - but I just reckon no. Not anymore. |

| Enheduanna | posted 18-Apr-2002 9:09am 1. 28 2. F 3. No 4. None 5. Can't think of any except Fight Club, and those were intentional and revealed to the audience. Oh, and supposedly the camel on the Camel cigarettes package has a naked man with an erect penis standing in it. I think people mostly see them where they are just coincidences. 6. I don't really think they exist, so I can't say. |
| CarolL | (reply to msgman) posted 18-Apr-2002 9:24am Clever |
| grmbrand | posted 18-Apr-2002 10:43am 1. 28 2. Male or "yes please!" or "who's offering?" or "I hardly know you!" 3. No. 4. Many years ago I saw a text about subliminal messages that referenced a cigarette ad wherein a nude woman had been very subtly airbrushed into amountain range. I also know that they used to put subliminal messages into filmreels at drive-in movies that encouraged patrons to buy food from the snack counter. I don't know what the success rate was... 5. These days? No idea. Also, I hope you're not making a connection between product placement and subliminal messages--just because Slimer eats a can of Coke in _Ghostbusters_ doesn't make me want to drink more Coke... 6. Manipulating people to do things they wouldn't do otherwise is bad, but then, that's what marketing is all about, right? I think using subliminal messages is worse, because you are undermining the consumer's capability (however limited) for judgement. |
| darkshadowsseeker | (reply to confetti) posted 18-Apr-2002 1:28pm Maybe she was away from her computer when this was in qual. |
| dora | (reply to confetti) posted 18-Apr-2002 2:27pm May? I was born in May too! |
| Zang | posted 18-Apr-2002 3:19pm I'm surprised this passed! I'm 40 years old. I enjoy sex, but haven't been getting much lately. I think that subliminal messages might be everywhere, but I also think that most of them are probably unintentional. I remember this was a hot topic back in the late 70s, there was a book out, lots of people were talking about it. I haven't given the idea a lot of thought since. I recall that the book concentrated on magazine ads for liquor and cigarettes. I'm not real big on pronouncing judgement on things being "bad" or "good". I don't think that subliminal messages are either. They just are. Apparently there have been conflicting studies as to whether they are even effective. This strikes me as an extremely odd subject to be bringing up at this time. It is like an anachronism. Sort of like talking about pyramid power or Uri Gellar... |
| Zang | (reply to cuteasabutton) posted 18-Apr-2002 3:21pm I was thinking about that movie as I was typing my response! It was a good one! Underappreciated. |
| spidertea | posted 18-Apr-2002 3:23pm 1. 21 2. female 3. no 4. none 5. I've seen product placement, but that is not the same as subliminal messages. 6. neither |

| cuteasabutton | (reply to Zang) posted 19-Apr-2002 1:16pm Very underappriciated! Have you seen other John Carpenter movies? Like, um... Prince of Darkness and Out of the Mouth of Madness- they were both very good! I really like the way he uses the music through most of his movies to add to the effect. I was just thinking that I didn't want to go see the Scorpion King because there is a WWF guy in it. But then I thought about the other movies that I have seen with a WWF stars in them, like The Running Man and They Live. Maybe I will go see it after all! |
| Biggles | posted 19-Apr-2002 3:04pm 1) 18 2) No thanks! (Sorry, couldn't resist - how immature!) I'm female. 3) No. 4) My understanding of subliminal messages is that you don't realise that you're seeing them. 5) I think we have different ideas about what subliminal messages are. 6) Bad if they occur. Advertising should be straight up. |
| Zang | (reply to cuteasabutton) posted 19-Apr-2002 3:53pm Not the ones you mentioned. I have seen some of his cheesy horror flicks; "Christine", "The Thing", and that "Escape From New York" silly actioner. |
| cuteasabutton | (reply to Zang) posted 20-Apr-2002 2:04pm The other ones are not anything like those. Far more creative. Check em' out next time you are at the video store if you can find em'. |
| Zang | (reply to cuteasabutton) posted 21-Apr-2002 12:01pm Okay! |
| juliw | posted 21-Apr-2002 1:38pm I am 47 and a female. I think subliminal messages are widely used. I read a book called Media Sexploitation that showed how they do things like write the word SEX in the salt on Ritz crackers, etc. I have often seen advertising and messages in movies. Okay, I am going to type a secret message to you. See if you can find it! fjfjfjffjwefjfjfjfjdontfjfjfjfjlikefjfjfjfjtofjfjfjfjdofjfjfjdofjfjfjotherfjfjfjpeoplesfjfjfjfjfjhomeworkfjfjfjonfjfjfjthisfjfjfjsitefjfjfj!!!! |
| cody | posted 21-Apr-2002 8:26pm Last I heard subliminal messages were largely bunk (urban legend). Sub-liminial means 'below the limit of perception' so they aren't really perceived. By definition, if they aren't perceived they can't affect your decisions... :). Write the paper anyways, though. Something that is 'sub-liminal' may as well not even exist. As far as all the talk about companies using subliminal advertising. I'm sure there is the rare case but most of what you hear is urban legend or people 'seeing things'. |

I didn't notice them, they are subliminal. 5. Name movies and tv shows that contain lots of subliminal messages and/or subliminal advertising. 6. Are subliminal messages bad or good, explain? |
