What will you choose as your new national anthem?

Imagine that you have been appointed by the government of your country to select a replacement for the current national anthem. You've been told to select something based on these criteria:
  1. It must have been composed within the last 100 years.
  2. It must have lyrics (words) that are meaningful and relevant to your country.
  3. It must be capable of being sung as an anthem - that is, it should be singable by "ordinary" people, in a variety of circumstances, without necessarily needing a full band or professional singers to perform it.
  4. It must have a melody (tune) that is distinctive and recognisable when played as an instrumental.
It doesn't need to have been written by someone from your country (most existing anthems aren't, either), but your government would prefer that the composer had some connection with the nation if possible.

So - what are you going to choose?

(Note: http://surveycentral.org/survey/10290.html asked a similar question, but in a very different way.)

aarrgghh! Sneakily when I clicked on the link I got a pop-up add. Which as I am now a subscriber is very odd and disconcerting to say the least. (Don't panic I'm gonna answer soon)

Secondly how nice to be reminded of my little survey from way back. * laughing out loud * I remember I first thought of that survey on the subway and I was smirking to myself and a little grunted laugh came out and people looked at me like I was some kind of lunatic. (Don't panic I'll answer in a moment)

Which makes me wonder whether we brits do supress our laughter as much as our anger. This is supposed to cause cancer btw. * frown *

Okay my answer is........er.......I can't think of one. Oh no wait *runs off to do a google search* Okay its this one http://gaffa.org/sensual/l_oeml.html called 'Oh England My Lionheart' which is really beautiful. But I guess not very nice for us Welsh and the Scots and Northern Irish. So maybe just an English Anthem for sporting events etc.

Okay finished now. (too much coffee * wry smile * )

I don't know. Maybe Waltzing Matilda, a song that is a sentimental favourite, but which has little to do with Australia as a nation. It once was the national anthem but was replaced with Advance Australia Fair. Here's the words, there's really nothing 'athemy' about them.

Once a jolly swagman sat by a billabong,
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
And he sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.
CHORUS
Waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda,
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me,
And he sang as he sat and waited by the billabong,
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Down came a jumbuck to drink beside the billabong
Up jumped the swagman and seized him with glee
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tuckerbag
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Down came the stockman, riding his thoroughbred,
Down came the troopers, one, two, three,
"Where's the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag?
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Up jumped the swagman and plunged into the billabong,
"You'll never catch me alive!," cried he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me.

Song: Khe Sanh
Artist: Cold Chisel

I left my heart to the sappers round Khe Sanh
And my soul was sold with my cigarettes to the blackmarket man
I've had the Vietnam cold turkey
From the ocean to the Silver City
And it's only other vets could understand

About the long forgotten dockside guarantees

How there were no V-dayheroes in 1973
How we sailed into Sydney Harbour
Saw an old friend but couldn't kiss her
She was lined, and I was home to the lucky land

And she was like so many more from that time on

Their lives were all so empty, till they found their chosen one
And their legs were often open
But their minds were always closed
And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains
And the legal pads were yellow, hours long, paypacket lean
And the telex writers clattered where the gunships once had been
But the car parks made me jumpy
And I never stopped the dreams
Or the growing need for speed and novacaine

So I worked across the country end to end

Tried to find a place to settle down, where my mixed up life could mend
Held a job on an oil-rig
Flying choppers when I could
But the nightlife nearly drove me round the bend

And I've travelled round the world from year to year

And each one found me aimless, one more year the more for wear
And I've been back to South East Asia
But the answer sure ain't there
But I'm drifting north, to check things out again

You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone

Only seven flying hours, and I'll be landing in Hong Kong
There ain't nothing like the kisses
From a jaded Chinese princess
I'm gonna hit some Hong Kong mattress all night long

Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone

Yeah the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And it's really got me worried
I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry
And the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone

I hate the song - but perhaps The Proclaimers' - 'When you go will you send back a letter from America' song for Scotland. It was written less than 100 years ago, has an annoyingly catchy tune and is by two Scots. It's also relevant I think, few people who leave Scotland want to return.

IF I HAD A HAMMER

If I had a hammer,
I'd hammer in the morning
I'd hammer in the evening,
All over this land.

I'd hammer out danger,
I'd hammer out a warning,
I'd hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

If I had a bell,
I'd ring it in the morning,
I'd ring it in the evening,
All over this land.

I'd ring out danger,
I'd ring out a warning
I'd ring out love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

If I had a song,
I'd sing it in the morning,
I'd sing it in the evening,
All over this land.

I'd sing out danger,
I'd sing out a warning
I'd sing out love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

Well I got a hammer,
And I got a bell,
And I got a song to sing, all over this land.

It's the hammer of Justice,
It's the bell of Freedom,
It's the song about Love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

It's the hammer of Justice,
It's the bell of Freedom,
It's the song about Love between my brothers and my sisters,
All over this land.

It's bitter but proud. It's one of my favourites.

The Donkey (GK Chesterton)

When fishes flew and forests walked
And figs grew upon thorn,
Some moment when the moon was blood
Then surely I was born.

With monstrous head and sickening cry
And ears like errant wings,
The devil's walking parody
On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,
Of ancient crooked will;
Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,
I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;
One far fierce hour and sweet:
There was a shout about my ears,
And palms before my feet.

I quite like my current national anthem! It fits all of the relevant criteria and it's non-militaristic and non-monotheistic.

Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea:
Our land abounds in nature gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair,
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

I don't really know what the real definition is, but it's bands from the south (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot...and so on) and they share a similar style, once you've heard enough of it you can defiitly pick it out.
