| darkshadowsseeker | posted 11-Mar-2002 11:54pm Yes, without a doubt! |
| Dino | posted 12-Mar-2002 7:30am I do not know because I don't live in the USA. But calling window cleaners image enhancement technicians or whatever sounds pathetic to me - even if you are a window cleaner. Its like people are telling you that they are ashamed of your job title and want to change it for you so you don't have to feel embarrassed. Which sums up a lot of politically correct titles. ie visually impaired or differently abled. |
| Galomorro | posted 12-Mar-2002 10:10am Yeah, in some cases they have. TV, for instance, is too worried that people will complain about certain things and the sponsors will be boycotted. I for one would like to see the Comedy Central "That's My Bush" show come back. I don't like the fact that so many sitcoms, etc. have to be **so** careful not to offend anyone and there are certain things you can't say on TV that regular people do say all the time. They are lots better about this than they were in the past though, as in the goody-goody 50s shows. Also it bugs me that in the past there have been occasions where little kids, like as young as first graders, cannot kiss or hug another little classmate without some nut screaming about sexual harassment -- not at **that** age! Sometimes it's just kids' innocence and adults like to make adult situations out of it. IMHO Americans sometimes tend to overdo it and take "political correctness" to ridiculous limits. |
| Galomorro | (reply to Dino) posted 12-Mar-2002 10:13am Oh yeah, Dino, I left that one out about the titles, but I totally agree with you! Why use big complicated titles so that many people have no idea what you're talking about? Who sits in their offices thinking up titles like this? |
| RayB | posted 12-Mar-2002 11:12am ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Jemmy | posted 12-Mar-2002 11:12am I didn't know a piece of land could have opinions like that. |
| LindaH | posted 12-Mar-2002 11:51am No. There are a few people like that running around, but most people don't bother with it. |
| Dino | (reply to Galomorro) posted 12-Mar-2002 12:07pm Is there a politically term for Queers? Or are we just the LGBT communtity? I know I shouldn't say it but even LGBT pisses me off. |
| romkey | posted 12-Mar-2002 12:10pm I don't know which USA you're thinking of... certainly parts of the media are very sensitive about political correctness, but then they're very worried they'll alienate their viewers/listeners/whatever-ers. I don't know that many people who are particularly concerned about it, and it seems like large swathes of the US are pretty much dedicated to being politically incorrect. |
| Biggles | posted 12-Mar-2002 1:51pm Quite the opposite... |
| Zang | posted 12-Mar-2002 2:42pm Your Pro PC site link isn't really Pro PC. It is damn funny, but obviously intended to be sarcastic you silly person! To answer the question, I don't live in the United States, or know enough about it to answer, but considering that the so called "Pro PC" site is in fact a Canadian site, I think that this is obviously a Canadian issue as well. I think that a lot of the PC issues are on the right track, but they do tend to get out of hand. This will always happen when you let stupid people get into positions of power. People who don't really understand what it is about, start making rules that are ill-considered. I think that being sensitive to the feelings of others when you speak is a good thing. However, I don't believe in censorship, and I don't think that just because someone is a minority that they are always right. Universities seem to carry this stuff way too far. I have friends who are alumni of a local university, one is a professor there now, they have student societies for various groups; gay students, Chinese students etc.. The rules are that these clubs are open to everyone. I doubt if anyone who wasn't part of the group would want to join. I suggested a group for heterosexual white males. My friends said that although that isn't against the rules, it would be frowned on. White students are a minority on campus, there are definitely fewer white heterosexual male students than Chinese students, yet they wouldn't be perceived as a "minority group" because of the traditional power structure. |
| Zang | (reply to Dino) posted 12-Mar-2002 2:45pm I thought "Queers" was the politically correct term. Either that or "Godless Sodomites". |
| Cleo | posted 12-Mar-2002 4:09pm Only those who are anal retentive. |
| Cleo | (reply to Dino) posted 12-Mar-2002 4:14pm What's LGBT stand for??? **scratches her head** I tried to figure it out but only came up with,"Legitimately Gay Bisexual Transvestite."' Help!!!!!!I just don't know... |
| Gamera | posted 12-Mar-2002 4:24pm It's become too obsessed with appearing to be correct or incorrect, instead of just doing the right thing. |
| confetti | posted 12-Mar-2002 5:15pm Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah Look who we have for our president...didn't you ever wonder why Bozo the clown retired last year? *gives you meaningful look* |
| Amanda | posted 12-Mar-2002 5:29pm Some of the people in the US have become way to obsessed with being politically correct. But, there are others, like me, who just don't give a damn. I'm not scared to say what's on my mind. If it offends somebody, oh well. That's the way it should be. I don't think we should go out of our way to offend people, but if it happens while we are simply speaking our mind, then it happens. No need to lose sleep over it. |
| Amanda | (reply to Dino) posted 12-Mar-2002 5:35pm I know exactly what you are talking about. I have a friend that's dating a garbage man. She always tells me he's an environmental clean-up engineer. I'm like, "Excuse me? I thought that was him picking up my trash this morning?" environmental clean-up engineer makes no sense to me at all. I've heard off all kinds of different job titles like this that make no sense. However, your image enhancement technician is a pretty good one |
| Galomorro | (reply to Dino) posted 12-Mar-2002 10:33pm I guess I haven't heard of one lately. LGBT is okay with me. There has just been opened a LGBT CENTER here, not far from our "gay-Mecca" Castro district. I have not yet seen it tho'. |
| natsim | posted 13-Mar-2002 1:23am I have no idea. It's a shame that the "Pro PC" website you chose was a joke website. |
| mimind | posted 13-Mar-2002 1:30am i think this is one of the reason extremism is sooo popular in the u.s. nobody is supposed to speak thier mind about anything so they try to define how they feel in some totally outrages way instead. political correctness is a fudging joke and im glad its not a part of survey central! |
| Dino | (reply to Cleo) posted 13-Mar-2002 3:59am LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered. I guess its a pretty inclusive title as it doesn't leave anyone out but it gets a bit sickly when we have to go on LGBT pride marches instead of the old days when you just went on a Gay Pride March and be done with it. |
| Dino | (reply to Zang) posted 13-Mar-2002 4:11am They have a newspaper in the UK called 'The Voice' - sub heading. Britain's Black Newspaper. http://www.voice-online.co.uk/ All very well unless someone tried to publish a White paper. On an even weirder note. Our local police station received a politely suggested note from the local council department that they remove the UK flag from outside as it is potentially offensive to the ethnic minority community. They removed it! |
| dora | posted 13-Mar-2002 11:39am I don't live in USA,but I say oh yes yes yes.And they poisoned all the world with this bullcrap. |
| Zang | (reply to Dino) posted 13-Mar-2002 2:39pm In the United States they have a black television channel: http://www.mbcnet.org/ETV/B/htmlB/blackenterta/blackenterta.htm You gotta scratch your head over that flag removal thing...What the hell's that all about? |
| Biggles | (reply to Dino) posted 13-Mar-2002 3:22pm Sheffield town hall refused to put up a banner saying Merry Christmas last year - although they did put up a Happy Eid one a few weeks before! |
| Cleo | (reply to Dino) posted 13-Mar-2002 8:42pm I know what you mean.I have A LOT of Gay Lesbian cousins,& they too think that it was so much nicer, when things were so much more simpler, way back then. |
| Cleo | (reply to Amanda) posted 13-Mar-2002 8:53pm When I was unemployed & filling out job apps,my cousin would help me.I asked her,"What shall I put here,I've been unemployed for a couple months & I've been staying home?" She says, just put down "Domestic Engineer" Hey I like that! I told her. |

| editboy23 | posted 23-Mar-2002 12:04am Absolutely. To the point of sickening. Why do you think so many people in this country are indecisive? Why do you think kids make bad decisions? Were so busy running around trying to please everyone else, we've forgot who we really need to please...God. |

| phildip | posted 31-Mar-2002 9:17pm i also believe that communisim has infiltrated the united states govroment. quick example: the number two thing for a good communist state according to karl marx's communist manifesto is: graduated income tax. what do alot of people push for these days? (especially democrats) graduated income tax. these people are slowly trying to turn the US into a socialst cesspool. it is working too, stop it. |

| DeeJay | posted 31-Mar-2002 11:06pm Honestly, I don't really see any problem with trying not to offend people, what harm could it do? But I don't really have a strong opinion on this topic. So don't mind me... I think people should be able to determine when something is just in fun, or when someone is seriously trying to offend someone. |
| LK | posted 26-Jan-2006 3:01pm 1st of all: All you people that are not from America need to shut up. Just because our country is the best does not mean you need to hate on it! Yes we have a few problems but nothing compared to the rest of the world. Why do people come to America EVERYDAY!!! I do agree that America has become a little ridiculous about the "Politically Correct" phrase and Americans need to realize and change our bad habits!!! Thanks..... |
| CrispenC | posted 2-Dec-2008 1:52pm I think that America needs to let up on people being politically correct. It is crazy to believe that someone might get offended. My opinion on that is if you are offended by what people say change the way you are. I should not have to watch what i say just because someone might not like that. BOOOOOOO HOOOOO....If you do not want to be called a queer or a nigger dont act like one. One of my favorite quotes is "if you do not want to be called something don't be it and if you are going to be it don't complain when you get called it" |
